NP Co-op, in collaboration with UOB, hosted a lunchtime talk on Will Writing, Estate and Wealth Planning, bringing together more than 50 Co-op members and colleagues from Ngee Ann Polytechnic for an engaging and thought-provoking session.

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Patrick Chang from SimplyWills as our speaker. An alumnus of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Business Studies Class of 1984, Patrick brought not only professional expertise but also a meaningful connection back to campus — making the session especially meaningful and relatable for our community.

Through an interactive and highly engaging discussion, participants explored an increasingly important topic that is often postponed but essential for long-term financial wellbeing and peace of mind: planning ahead to protect loved ones and preserve one’s legacy.

Key topics covered included: • The importance of having a legally structured will • Estate planning and wealth preservation strategies • CPF and insurance nominations in Singapore • Trusts and considerations for protecting dependents • Business succession and intergenerational planning • Reducing uncertainty and future disputes through proactive planning

As family structures and financial landscapes continue to evolve, estate and legacy planning are no longer conversations reserved for later stages of life — they are part of responsible financial planning at every stage.

Participants also enjoyed a complimentary lunch bento kindly sponsored by UOB, creating a relaxed setting for meaningful conversations and learning over the lunch hour.

A big thank you to UOB and SimplyWill for partnering with NP Co-op to bring this valuable session to our members and colleagues, and to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to join us.

Today's visit by 16 government audit officials from the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education (경상남도교육청) to Ngee Ann Polytechnic was one of those days that reminded me why I remain so proud of this institution — long after my years as its Head of Internal Audit.

The delegation's first stop was the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Co-operative's Ngee Ann Shop at the Block 1 Student Services Visitors Centre — a fitting welcome that gave our Korean guests an immediate sense of the vibrant, student-centred community that defines NP's campus life. From there, the day unfolded beautifully.

We briefly covered my ACFE Singapore Chapter sharing on fraud risk management and public sector governance in the education sector — touching on Singapore's governance architecture, real AGO audit findings, and the importance of integrity culture. But honestly, the highlight of the morning was what came next.

The Sandbox (TSB) — NP's entrepreneurship and innovation centre — gave the delegation a window into a dimension of education governance that goes far beyond audit: how do you build a culture where young people don't just learn, they create?

What impressed our guests most:

🚀 The I&E Journey — a structured pathway that takes students from exploring entrepreneurship through 8-module PLPs and Hackathons, all the way to building and running their own startups. Not theoretical. Real.

☕ Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) — students actually compete to run their own café on campus for two years. The café brands we saw — Acai Den, Prata Boy, Coffee Connect, Oishii Daily — are student-owned businesses operating in a live commercial environment. Risk, reward, accountability: all before graduation.

🔧 Makers' Academy — a hands-on prototyping and tinkering space where students build real products, not just presentations.

💡 AGILE — NP's alumni incubator, developed in partnership with UOB, providing facilities, mentorship, and access to networks for graduates ready to turn ideas into ventures. With the Startup SG Founder Grant (up to $50,000) and the NP Incubator Grant (up to $10,000 for NP alumni), the financial runway is real too.

The numbers speak for themselves: 47 startups at growth stage, 28 graduated, and more than 15 with over S$250,000 in annual revenue — all traceable back to seeds planted in NP's ecosystem, supported by partners like Enterprise Singapore, SkillsFuture SG, Microsoft, MAS, PayPal and IBM, among others.

For audit officials whose work centres on accountability and governance, seeing how NP embeds responsibility into entrepreneurship — through real stakes, real customers, and real consequences — was a powerful cross-disciplinary lesson.

Education systems that produce not just graduates, but founders and problem-solvers, are an asset to society. NP has been doing this quietly and effectively for years.

NP Co-op Brings Cheer to Essential Workers at

“Unsung Heroes Appreciation” Event

On 11 May 2026, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Consumer Co-operative Society (NP Co-op), together with students from the Community Service Interest Group (CSIG) from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology (LSCT), jointly organised the second run of the “Unsung Heroes Appreciation” event to honour and thank the many essential workers who help keep the Ngee Ann Polytechnic campus running smoothly every day. The event was also strongly supported by NP’s Estate, Eco & Safety Office (EES).

More than 130 essential workers attended the appreciation luncheon, including cleaners, landscape workers, logistics personnel, technicians, security officers, and parking wardens. The gathering aimed to recognise their invaluable contributions and dedication in maintaining a safe, clean, and conducive campus environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The event space was transformed into a lively and heartwarming celebration, featuring a buffet lunch spread, complimentary Luckin Coffee vouchers, an ice cream booth, a butter corn snack booth, and a photo booth where guests could relax, enjoy themselves, and capture joyful memories together. The cheerful atmosphere was filled with laughter, conversations, and moments of appreciation as attendees took a well-deserved break from their daily responsibilities.

Adding warmth and vibrancy to the afternoon, the NP String CCA group presented several musical performances for the attendees. Their performances brought smiles and joy to many of the workers present, contributing to the meaningful and uplifting atmosphere throughout the event. To further express appreciation, NP Co-op also presented every essential worker with a Luckin Coffee voucher, inviting them to “enjoy a free coffee from us” as a small token of gratitude for their hard work and dedication.

Deputy Principal Mah Wee Beng delivered a simple yet heartfelt opening address, expressing appreciation to the workers for their tireless efforts and commitment in keeping the campus clean, safe, and operational every day. The President of NP Co-op and the Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic also made a special appearance during the event, taking time to mingle and chat personally with the workers.

While the activities and refreshments brought excitement to the celebration, the heart of the event was the opportunity to recognise the people whose efforts are often unseen, yet deeply felt across the campus community. Their dedication and resilience continue to shape the everyday experience at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

More than just a celebration, the Unsung Heroes Appreciation event served as a reminder of the important role every individual plays in shaping the Ngee Ann Polytechnic experience. From maintaining the cleanliness of the campus to ensuring the safety and comfort of students and staff, these workers are truly the backbone of the community.

As the event concluded, it left behind more than full hearts and happy memories. It reinforced the spirit of kindness, respect, and appreciation within the NP family.

Through meaningful initiatives such as this, NP Co-op hopes to continue fostering a culture of gratitude, inclusiveness, and care for the unsung heroes who make a difference every day.

On 11 February, members of the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Consumer Co-operative Society Limited gathered at the Blk 16 Sports Hall for our inaugural NP Co-op Pickleball Workshop — and what a fantastic start to the year it was.

The session was part of our effort to strengthen the “WE-first” spirit that defines our co-operative. Beyond the rallies and friendly competition, the real highlight was seeing members connect, laugh, encourage one another, and try something new together.

With guidance from our coach, participants picked up the fundamentals quickly — from how to hold the paddle, to serving, positioning and teamwork. The energy in the hall grew louder with every point won and every near miss cheered.

Each participant also received a Pickleball Starter Kit, making sure everyone could continue their journey in one of the fastest-growing sports around.

What made the afternoon special wasn’t just the game, it was the camaraderie. Long-time members met new friends, colleagues partnered across departments, and the co-operative community came alive in a different way.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our very first pickleball event such a success. If you missed this run, don’t worry, more community activities are already being planned.

This morning, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Consumer Co-operative Society Limited hosted a meaningful and restorative session titled “Mental Health & Mindfulness: Practical Skills for a Busy Mind.” Held on 18 November 2025 at 11:00 a.m., the talk brought together members seeking practical ways to care for their mental well-being amid the demands of work, study, and daily life.

The session was conducted by psychotherapist and trauma specialist Sean Chew, whose warm, grounded approach made the experience accessible even for first-time participants. What stood out most was how immediately useable the techniques were — nothing complicated, nothing time-consuming, just simple practices that members could start applying the moment they stepped out of the room.

🧘 What Members Found Most Helpful

1. Stress Made Understandable

Sean broke down how stress affects the brain and body in practical, everyday language. Members shared that this made them more aware not just of what they were feeling, but why their minds and bodies react the way they do.

2. Two Guided Mindfulness Moments

Many participants appreciated the short, guided mindfulness practices built into the session. These offered an immediate experience of grounding — a reminder that calm is accessible even during a packed workday.

3. Techniques That Fit Busy Lives

Rather than long or complicated exercises, Sean emphasised “micro-practices” that can be used any time:

between meetings

while commuting

before difficult conversations

or as a quick reset during stressful moments

Members commented that these small practices felt doable, realistic, and easy to adopt.

4. A Simple One-Week Plan to Build Habits

Participants left with a brief, practical 1-week quick-practice guide, giving them a starting point for integrating mindfulness into their routines. This was especially valued by those who wanted structure but didn’t have time for intensive programmes.

💛 Why the Session Mattered to Our Co-op Community

Beyond techniques, the session encouraged a culture of psychological safety and empathy — values that strengthen our Co-op community. Members shared that the talk helped them:

feel more in control of their emotional responses

understand their stress triggers

reconnect with their mental well-being

The AGM was preceded by a talk on Heritage Bay - Preserving Culture with a Modern Twist by Miguel Bay, NP Alumni who started a business bridging traditional artisanal crafts with modern designs for today's lifestyles.

Following the presentation, the Board presented its annual report during the 54th Annual General Meeting conducted on 12 September 2025 at LT58A around 11.30 a.m.

The feedback from the events were generally positive and members were able to learn pick up many useful tips from the various events.

Donations

The Co-op also donated $5,000 during the financial year to Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Student Aid Fund. The donations comprised the following:

(a) NP Co-op Student Aid Grant: $5,000 to support 5 academic students meeting Tier 1 Bursary (Government Framework for the Higher Education Community Bursary)

Financial Results

The Co-op achieve an unmodified (clean) opinion on the Co-op’s financial statements for the year ending 31 March 2025.

The Co-op had achieved a revenue of $191.3k (FY 24/25) vs. $242.9k (FY 23/24). This was attributed to a decline in enrolment number of full-time pre-employment training (PET) students. In addition, students on average spent less time on campus due to initiatives such as “Wednesdays without Walls” where there were generally no time-tabled classes on Wednesdays during term time.

Deficit for the financial year was $45.4k compared to the previous year's surplus of $20.5k.

We continue to acknowledge the good work put in by our two long-serving NP Co-op staff, Mr. Low and Mdm. Jenny Koh.

The Committee of Management continues to actively monitor the ongoing business environment and act in a prudent manner to manage the various risks.

On behalf of the COM, the Chairman thanked all members for their steadfast support to the Co-operative. He also expressed sincere appreciation to our stakeholders such as the current Principal/CEO of NP and President of NP Co-op (Mr. Lim Kok Kiang), Deputy Principals, Senior Management of NP, Director and Head of Estate, Eco and Safety Office.

The Chairman also presented a token of appreciation to our outgoing Board Member Mr. Steven Lim for his contributions to NP Co-op and the NP community.

On 14th May 2025 at 12pm, something different happened.

Instead of being behind the scenes, these heroes were in the spotlight.

NP Co-op and School of Life Sciences & Technology (LCST) Student Group co-organised a special appreciation event, held right above Makan Place at Block 51, Level 3.  It was to honour them for their dedication and efforts in working tirelessly across the campus everyday to maintain a clean, safe and conducive environment for students to thrive in.

Over 200 cleaners, security guards and NP staff showed up on this day, not to work, but to be appreciated.

From the very moment our esteemed guests arrive, an energetic emcee led the flow of the event with his vibrant hosting and humour that evokes laughter and a deep sense of appreciation among all present.

The afternoon was filled with joy and comforting local dishes prepared by Elsie's Kitchen. Guests were treated to a hearty spread featuring fried rice, bee hoon, chicken curry, potato samosa, sweet and sour fish and cream puffs to end on a sweet treat.

It was truly heartwarming to witness cleaners, security guards and NP staff come together to share a meal together, as a community. It was a beautiful reminder that food has the power to bring people together with sparking conversations, laughter and genuine connections.

On 15 November 2024, the NP Co-op successfully hosted an engaging and thought-provoking lunchtime talk titled "Engaging Gen Z & Alpha Students with Ego States Analysis." The session drew a lively audience of NP Co-op members and staff, eager to learn strategies to better understand and communicate with younger generations.

Post-Talk Lunch: After the insightful session, participants enjoyed a delicious Halal Bento Set Lunch, provided exclusively for NP Co-op members who had registered in advance. LAUNCH OF “FLEXI SELF-CARE” INCENTIVE PROGRAMME FOR ALL NP CO-OP MEMBERS

Self-care is all about looking after yourself. It means taking the time to tend to your physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being. Practicing self-care is really important in itself, and it will enable you to help and care for others, work well, and do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day: in other words, be the best version of yourself.

Dear Members,

NP Co-op cares for the well-being of all our members in the midst of our stressful lifestyles.  To support self-care of our members, we are launching the NP Co-op “Flexi Self-Care” Incentive Programme (“the Programme”) to incentivise our members to take time to look after their physical, spiritual, mental and emotional well-being.

Under the Programme, NP Co-op members(based on cut-off as at 12 Sep 24) can claim reimbursement up to SGD 60 Dollars (inclusive of GST) for purchase of any self-care related product, service and activity to support physical, spiritual, mental and emotional well-being. Claims below $60 will be reimbursed up to the claim amount for qualifying items. Claims above $60 (inclusive of GST) will be capped at reimbursement of $60 only.

Examples of self-care related product, service and activity include but not limited to:

Health supplements, health food, etc

Fitness and sports equipment, services, etc

Tours, cruises, day trips, etc

Massage, Spa treatment, etc

Movies, performances, concerts, karaoke, etc

Mental wellness activities e.g., pottery session, cooking and baking classes, art jamming sessions etc.  

Meal with family and friends etc

Furniture and electronic/electrical appliances for WFH use etc

Each member (based on membership roll as at 12 September 2024) shall be entitled to claim for one reimbursement for up to SGD 60 Dollars in a single receipt for purchases dated after 12 September 2024 (0000 hrs) until 30 November 2024 (2359 hrs). Non-NP Co-op Members are not eligible for this programme.

Claims will be checked and assessed by NP Co-op for accuracy and validity.

NP Co-op reserves all rights to refuse or reject claims if it does not meet the criteria stated above and upon the absolute discretion by NP Co-op Directors in exercising their professional judgement. Claims submitted outside of the submission period and in multiple receipts will be rejected. NP Co-op reserves all rights to make the final decision on claims and appeals for late submissions, unclear submission etc. would not be accepted.  Notification is deemed served to all members via email notification and on the tumblr website: https://ngeeanncoop.tumblr.com. It is the responsibility of staff to keep their emails updated with NP Co-op and NP Co-op is not liable for non-receipt of emails by members due to technical issues or due to staff being away on leave/on non-pay leave etc.

Reimbursement will be effected by end of November 2024 to the designated bank account in NP Coop’s record. It is the responsibility of members to ensure that if they have changed their bank account details to update your bank account numbers to the Secretary of NP Co-op (Leow_Teck_Sim @np.edu.sg)
