As he stepped onto the hearthrug, there was a sudden pause in the general conversation. Most of the heads in the room turned towards him with a sort of curious interest that wasn’t just someone new arriving. He gazed around, slightly disconcerted. Had they been talking about him?

‘What?’ he said, into the pause.

‘Nothing at all.’ Grandma came bustling towards him and swept him into the usual tight hug. ‘Come in, sit down. Oh, Louis, love!’ She added, turning to greet Louis in the same manner as he arrived behind James. ‘Arthur, get them a drink.’

‘Of course, what’ll you have, lads. Beer?’ Grandad pushed himself up from his customary brown armchair, then paused in front of them. ‘Now, Jamie, is all this true—’

‘Arthur, do not,’ Grandma said forcefully.

chapter nineteen: wands or scales

“Well, if you don’t want to play and just want to stare out the window thinking about your ex-girlfriend for two hours, you’re more than welcome to do that.” Harry shook his head and reached out to take the galleon. “I wasn’t doing that,” he said. “I’ll play but I need limits. You can’t ask me about Auror classified things.” “That’s no fun,” said Astoria. “What are Auror classified things?” “You know what they are,” he told her. “What do we get if we win?” “Usually just bragging rights.” “Hm.” Harry observed the galleon. “Should I go first?”

When the heir to a pureblood family is found dead in Knockturn Alley, and her werewolf best friend is accused of the crime and goes missing, Astoria Greengrass takes it upon herself to investigate the complicated lives, loves, and deaths of England's pureblood elites, running up against the Aurors trying to solve the crime themselves - including one Harry Potter. But there is more than one secret sitting pretty beneath the gilded veneer of pureblood society, and some of them have the capability of tearing her own family apart. With her mother running for Minister for Magic, and each of her three older sisters adrift from each other, Astoria is racing against the clock, and against her own heart, to try to find a murderer lurking in plain sight.

“So,” said Harry, turning to look at her rather than at the large screen in the office that seemed to be showing some sort of game show. “How do you fancy a trip to Chicago?” “What, now?” asked Astoria. “Don’t we have a portkey back to England set for today?” “I can probably get it extended.” She scrunched her face. “Right, I forgot, everyone bends over backwards to do what you want.” Harry ignored this, looking down at his wristwatch. Fiddling with the dials on the end, he said, “I can see if we can get a ticket to Chicago today instead.” Astoria had already been mentally rehearsing what kind of excuse she might have to give Daphne to get her to let her go to Chicago for a day. “From here?” “Yeah, give me a minute.” He pressed one of the dials and the face of his watch popped open. Astoria stared at him, but he just lifted the watch to his mouth and said, “Call Bethany Abbott.”
