can we develop some sort of social structure that prevents girls whove been out for five minutes from confidently declaring universal truths abt transmisogyny and transfeminine sexuality
Andréi Arinouchkine
2/3s thru my reread of Detransition, Baby and i am a lottttt cooler on it than i was. and i do say this as a Torrey Peters fan (i got my dinky little t4t tattoo after i read Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones). IFYALO attempts to present a grand unified theory of transfemininity, and i think theres some pretty fair critiques of how it treats whiteness as default, but DTB is fucking up much worse. its this bizarre little self-flagellating dance wherein Peters is still trying to theorize the transfeminine condition, but she's now aware she's writing from a profoundly white perspective. so instead of taking a stab at anything else, she does this thing where she goes "and of course this only happens to white girls. TWOC are a different species."
parts of this book do still do it for me! Reese and Katrina are really fantastic characters, the whole section abt Amy's sexual history with dissociation is really special to me (i first read it when it was an excerpt on her website called Glamour Boutique). but i roll my eyes whenever it has Something To Say About Tgirls. the way she talked abt us in IFYALO felt anguished; this book is smug.
also dont set things in new york
i think you should read this book if "trans lit" interests you at all! bc peters is the first transfeminine author to really hit this level of mainstream success. but as a piece of fiction it mostly makes me think "it should have been casey plett"
i will say its rare that a book has me this compelled to yell at the characters to avert tragedy
i guess as far as transgender mom fiction goes i prefer the bleak punchline of a Brainwyrms or the genuinely (if slightly lib) utopian optimism of a Doctor Voynich and Her Children
