Junior Triangular

On the 12th of May the annual junior triangular between Onslow, Tawa and Newlands Colleges took place at Onslow College. Throughout the day Newlands College competed in many different sports including netball, hockey, basketball, football, cross country and badminton. We did very well and tried our best but in the end Tawa College came 1st place, Onslow came 2nd place and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, Newlands College came last. The triangular was a great success and everyone had lots of fun. Next year the triangular will take place here at Newlands College and everyone is looking forward to another opportunity to win the McDonalds Triangular cup back from Tawa College.

Year 12 English: War, what is it good for?

On Thursday 10th March all the 2ENX, 2ENG, and 2ENZ classes went to town to learn a bit more about World War 1 and what our soldiers had to go through while at war. We started at Te Papa where we went through the Gallipoli: The Scale of our War exhibition and read the stories of what it was like for the soldiers and nurses at war. We learnt about the masses of innocent men that got shipped off, without knowing what they were heading into, and the few that came back. We experienced just a little of what it would have been like in the trenches and living quarters for the soldiers. We learnt about the weapons that were used by both sides and the damage that those weapons did to soldiers. It was incredibly humbling and moving to learn about the hardships these soldiers went through. At noon we headed off through the streets of Wellington City to the Embassy where we listened to author Anna Mackenzie talk about her experience writing the story "Evie's War". Mackenzie talked about the journey she went on researching about what happened at war and the places she went to. She showed us photos of some of the graveyards in Belgium where the millions of missing soldiers are commemorated as well as photos of memorabilia that she has found from her relatives that were sent to war. Our experience at the Embassy was added to by Victoria University who left us little gift bags on our seats which contained a notepad and pen so that we could take notes on what Mackenzie talked about. I had a great time learning about the history of the war and Mackenzie's story. I look forward to reading Evie's War and studying more about WW1 in english learning more about the sacrifices both men and women made during the early 1900s.

Year 12 Drama Trip

On the 24th of Feb 2016 the Year 12 Drama classes went on a trip to the Wellington Museum of City and Sea to do research on the Wahine Disaster for our devising performances.

We heard from two survivors of the Wahine Disaster and they told us all about their first hand experiences.

After we went to the museum we went and saw a Fringe Festival performance called 'Slow Lane' which was all about how we are always rushing in our lives and never stop to look around at whats happening around us.

So, on 19th of Feb (last Friday), as an 'initiative for boys' Newlands College organised a talk for boys (it was open to all year levels) in order to motivate boys to do well at school. The school invited Ruvan Mendes, a former student of 'NC' who got a scholarship to study at Oxford and has traveled all around the world, mastering his trade (he is an engineer). 

    It was a lovely opportunity that the school provided us with. Ruvan, the guest speaker shared with us about his journey to success in life, starting way back in 2000, when he was year 13. It was an awesome experience and the one thing that I learnt was: the thing that separates the extremely successful people in life and the rest is how quickly they are able to bring themselves up from their lows in life.  I was truly inspired by him and I am looking forward to this year: Year 13, where it all began for him and I am hoping a similar thing happens for me.

A few weeks, the members of the WW100 committee put down crosses outside the canteen in honour of those who fought and died for New Zealand. I was honoured to read ‘In Flanders Fields’ for this ceremony.

Two in a Row!!

Congratulations to the members of team Geneios 2.0 whose short film "Loaf Me Alone" won the coveted, Best School Team award at the Wellington City Final of the 48HOURS Filmmaking Competition. This is a fantastic achievement considering how many school teams enter the competition.

It is the 4th consecutive year that a Newlands College team has been nominated for the award and the second year in a row that we have won: a testament to the passion Newlands College students bring to their film making.
