shame   curls   around   percy   the   same   way   verso's   cigarette   smoke   does   -   the   intensity   curls   and   retreats   with   every   barking   bite   that   verso   lets   out.   percy   tells   himself   that   its   a   * laugh,   and   that   there   is   something   divinely   cruel   and   twisted   about   the   way   that   verso   finds   his   anguish   so   hilarious.   percy   tells   himself   it's   just   shock   -   that   verso   * wasn't   the   kind   of   person   to   laugh   at   something   so   dastardly   at   his   own   expense.   smaller   things   * sure,   percy   would   allow   that   as   free   game   regardless   of   his   protests,   but   this   had   been   something   entirely   random   and   cruel   for   percy   to   experience.

fate   can   be   funny   like   that.

there   is   a   strange,   * somber   silence   that   coils   'round   the   two   eldest   of   the   big   three   -   a   mutual   understanding   of   the   turmoil   and   the   strife   that   they   * uniquely   experience   as   children   of   olympus'   big   three.   it   makes   percy   miss   the   hyena   chitter   of   a   laugh,   the   classic   verso   reaction   that   the   son   of   poseidon   had   come   to   loathe   and   accept   as   one   big   cousin-ly   package.

percy   does   not   want   to   have   a   communal   understanding   with   verso.   it's   not   like   he's   a   * bad   guy,   percy   actually   kind   of   likes   being   around   his   cousin   without   the   whole   'i'm   an   edgy   wildcard   and   i   actually   was   an   enemy   of   yours   too   btw'   vibe   that   the   two   had   shared   at   the   beginning.   the   smile,   the   * wicked   thing,   makes   him   feel   all   the   more   worse.   he   wills   tartarus   ( or   even   worse,   the   * hudson )   to   swallow   him   whole   and   let   him   qutie   literally   rest   with   the   fishes.

he   deflects;   percy   allows   himself   to   relax   his   shoulders,   waving   his   hands   as   he   turns   back   towards   the   carnage   that   surely   will   *not   leave   its   permanent   mark   on   himself   and   verso   ( surely ).   percy   jackson   is   not   someone   who   has   enough   emotional   depth   to   * mourn   -   the   mythos   that   led   younger   campers   to   be   unsure   if   he   was   actually   *real   or   not   held   that   in   high   regard.   he'll   allow   himself   to   be   the   fictitious   version   of   himself   and   not   the   reality.   he'll   just   call   annabeth   later.

verso   sachs   having   a   *semblance   of   being   'put   together'   is   something   that   percy   jackson   had   only   heard   in   rumors   -   recounts   from   a   time   where   the   son   of   zeus   had   to   take   on   some   responsibility   for   but   a   short   amount   of   time.   there's   an   innate   fear   once   again   of   how   *easily   percy   could've   fallen   down   a   similar   route   -   the   wingbeat   of   but   one   little   insect   steering   his   * entire   life   course   off   the   cliffside.

he'll   still   keep   it   a   secret   -   it   had   been   a   gift   from   poseidon,   alongside   the   * shocking   revelation   that   the   god   himself   had   a   cellphone   that   regularly   was   used   to   check   in   on   his   two   sons.   percy   hums,   pulling   up   a   map   location   for   a   local   diner.   he   flashes   it   in   the   direction   of   verso,   head   tilting.
