why do you reblog fics that are obviously abandoned? i don’t want to see a fic, start reading only to realize the author has not posted in more than a year…….
Sometimes when an author sees that the fic has activity, it encourages them to continue it.
That's not why I reblog but sometimes it does happen.
There's been lots of talk on here about how there's so little interaction that it's demotivating to authors. Maybe if you read that fic and commented or reached out to the author in a pleasant way, they might come back to it. A little kindness goes a long way.
I had a comment on a fic I wrote 15 years asking to finish and when I figure out how I plan on doing so. Thank you for asking. Good fics can still be unfinished fics.
I’ve started updating fics this year that readers would rightly have assumed abandoned. One I hadn’t written on since 2017. This year I completed a sequel to a fic I posted in 2016.
The reason I’ve done this is that I get comments still from people reading, re-reading, and discovering what’s already there - it’s a real boost to your own interest and confidence in returning to a story.
The idea that fic writers exist in some kind of vacuum and that they ought to be writing “just for themselves” is utter nonsense - if that were the case, these stories wouldn’t be posted at all. They’re up there because people are invested in the characters and are keen to engage with other people who feel the same - but life gets in the way, and enthusiasm and creativity can wane.
Genuinely what can bring it back is knowing that someone out there enjoys it, and is keen to read more.
This, so much this.
Unfinished fics are still worth reading. Many times, they're left in a good place, too, and just because the chapter count indicates it's not done doesn't mean there's not a satisfying conclusion in that last posted chapter.
And you never know--your comment, your reply, your reblog might be the one to inspire the author to posting another chapter. The question you ask about a character's choice or motivation or the theory you pose about what happens next might be what inspires the author to figure it out themselves!
No author wants to leave a fic unfinished. Those hang on us for the rest of our lives. (I have unfinished fics from the Fandom That Shall Not Be Named that still wear on me sometimes, and I have zero intention of going back there again.) There's usually a good reason why we haven't finished them... and most of the time, it's not necessarily lack of engagement, but lack of inspiration.
So comment. Ask questions. Pose theories. Pull out the lines that made you smile or laugh or cry or squeal. Who knows--you might jar that creativity loose, and get us writing again.
Be the engagement you want to see in the world.

Tragedy alignment chart. Feel free to use, but please reblog if you do.
And of course the second part of the tragedy, which is: which quadrant did you think you were in vs. which one you were really in
The emerald forest, Timur Akhriev
Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"
And they were like "What?"
And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."
And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"
And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.
And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.
Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.
There’s a phrase that really stuck in my head around this. It was from one of the British divers who enacted the Thai caving rescue, though I couldn’t tell you which one or which interview.
As he described to the interviewer a moment of panic and how he he overcame, the interviewer said, in one of those, summarise-last-answer-given-with-appropriate-levels-of-respect-in-order-to-proceed-to-next-question phrasing’s, “Wow, so you rose to the occasion -“
And the diver said, “No, actually people always get that exactly wrong. In an unexpected and urgent situation you don’t rise to the occasion. You sink to the level of your training.”

you don’t realize how important lunch is until you’re wandering around thinking about how unloveable and untalented and uniquely cursed you are and then it’s 4pm and you finally eat lunch and you go Oh. oh right.
lot of people commenting on this post like "who eats lunch at 4pm that's a terrible time to eat lunch" yes. that is the point. 4pm lunch is inadvisable. 4pm lunch is not the ideal. 4pm lunch makes the mind demons real.
free my girl she did all that and that’s what makes her such a compellingly complex character. that’s her essence
You can’t Abstain your way to a Better World.
The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.
If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.
The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.
It’s not enough to just not participate in society
If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.
You need Government.

Gonna talk about the U.S. like Wikipedia talks about China:
"The situation of human rights in the United States has attracted significant criticism from foreign governments, foreign press agencies, and non-governmental organizations, alleging widespread civil rights violations such as detention without trial, forced confessions, torture, restrictions of fundamental rights, and excessive use of the death penalty."
"The American constitution states that the "fundamental rights" of citizens include freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to a fair trial, freedom of religion, universal suffrage, and property rights. However, in practice, these provisions do not afford significant protection against criminal prosecution by the state. The U.S. has limited protections regarding LGBT rights."
"Although some criticisms of government policies and the ruling party are tolerated, censorship of political speech and information are amongst the harshest in the world and routinely used to prevent collective action. The U.S. also has the most comprehensive and sophisticated Internet censorship regime in the world, with numerous popular social media apps and websites being controlled and censored by state policy. The government suppresses popular protests and demonstrations that it considers a potential threat to "social stability". The U.S. additionally uses a massive espionage network of cameras, facial recognition software, sensors, and surveillance of personal technology as a means of social control of persons living in the country"
"Under US economic policy, thousands of private corporations use sensitive personal information to assign individuals a 'credit score,' a legal form of discrimination which incentivizes citizens to make housing, banking and other consumer decisions optimized for maximal profit extraction by financial middlemen"
I can't believe we live in a world where there's an AI company unironically called "Palantir," and it isn't a parody. It's a real thing. I remember seeing a picture of an advertisement on here and thinking, "This HAS to be a joke. This is too on-the-nose to be real. They wouldn't honestly name an AI company Palantir, after the Seeing Stones from Lord of the Rings that are supposed to offer knowledge, but famously also might be feeding you misinformation from evil sources because 'we do not know who else may be watching.'" But then here I am listening to the BBC News discussing why the CEO of Palantir just published a Manifesto that sounds like it was written by a supervillain.
