A Drabble a Day: Magical!AU
((I'm not actually going to write a drabble a day, I just wanted something clever to title this. Have a magical!AU drabble featuring some of my friend's pets and my dear Ven and Mywne~!))
“Any luck with that force-field, Mywne?”
The Desert Peophin shook his head. “Sorry, Ven; none of the break-in spells Sae taught me are working. Someone could probably blast their way through, but...”
“But your magic is defensive so it won’t be you, I know,” Ven sighed, glancing towards the sky nervously. “How are Ludroth and Urasina holding up?”
Mywne closed his eyes briefly, using his magic to mentally connect with his Darigan Peophin mate and her Speckled Uni sister. “Ludroth says they’re both fine for now, if a bit tired.”
Ven nodded. “They need to rendezvous with us soon. Nightfall is coming, and when it does, Urasina won’t be able to heal them anymore.”
“They know; they’re headed our way now,” Mywne said with a sigh. “I hate being the back-up healer,” he added quietly.
The Yellow Bori stuck her tongue out at him. “How do you think I feel being your babysitter?”
Mywne flushed. “I-I can take care of myself, you know!”
“I know you can, My,” Ven replied quickly. “I was just trying to lighten the mood!”
“How were you expecting that to work when your personal sun-beam generator was off fighting monsters?” A cheerful voice asked from above.
“I knew you’d have my back, Urasina,” Ven called back, waving to the Speckled Uni as she landed gracefully next to Mywne. The Darigan Peophin on her back slid off and switched to Quad form, her Thunder-lance vanishing as her hands became hooves.
“Ugh, riding bare-back is not fun,” Ludroth groused, examining her tail carefully. “Especially when you’ve got all that armor on.”
Mywne nuzzled his mate gently. “I’m glad you’re alright, Lu. Aside from the sore tail, of course.”
Ludroth smiled softly. “I’ll live,” she relented, pressing her forehead to Mywne’s.
“Isn’t it nice when they get all love-y in front of us?” Ven asked Urasina loudly, earning twin glares from the Peophins and an amused giggle from the Uni.
“Quite,” Urasina agreed. “Any luck with the force-field? That sand-storm you whipped up will only cover us for so long, Ven.”
“Unfortunately, no,” the Yellow Bori sighed. “None of the spells Sae taught Mywne worked.”
Mywne nodded. “Just as well; I’m sure we would’ve never heard the end of it if Sae found out we used one of her thieving spells to help save the world.”
Ludroth looked over at her sister. “Should we try the old ‘smash first ask questions later’ approach then, Urasina?”
The Speckled Uni shrugged. “It’s worth a shot.”
“The sooner we get through here, the better,” Ven proclaimed, gesturing the sisters forward to examine the force-field blocking the way forward. “We’re burning daylight, people.”
“You say that as if it’s a bad thing,” Urasina pointed out sweetly.
“Easy for you to say, dragon-slayer,” Ludroth joked, returning to her Anthro form and snatching up her Thunder-lance as it appeared in front of her. “The rest of us don’t get a strength and power boost when the sun goes down, remember?”
Urasina flared her dragon-wings, eyes sparkling. “Oh yeah…”
Ven rolled her eyes. “Sisters,” she hissed at Mywne, who wisely chose not to respond.
There was a flash of light and a roar of thunder, followed by the very faint cracking sound of a magical force-field overwhelmed. Ven grinned. “Nice one!”
“R-remind me why you needed Ven and me to join you on this quest?” Mywne squeaked.
“Ven’s great with translations, and Ludroth refused to come if she didn’t get to take you along,” Urasina answered smoothly.
Ludroth flushed. “I would have helped regardless! Besides, Mywne is really helpful to have around when your healing abilities go away, and he’s my mate, so why shouldn’t I get to take him along?”
“What about my Air Magic?” Ven interjected, mock hurt.
“Oh yea, and Ven makes really great sand-storms for coverage.”
Urasina laughed. “Speaking of coverage, I’m sure someone will have noticed the force-field is no longer standing. Let’s press forward and see if we can find somewhere relatively safe to rest for the night.”
The group of Neopians followed Urasina forward, everyone on their guard. The force-field had been surrounding a small ruin, something that would have gone unnoticed in the desert sands if not for the amount of magic protecting it. Based on what Ven had translated, there was an important artifact hidden somewhere inside.
The room they entered was small, one of the walls basically missing and there was sand piled in the corners. Urasina’s magic flared to brighten the small space.
Ven was the first to notice the trick stair case. “It looks like the floor was made to lower here,” she pointed out. “I’m guessing it’ll become some stairs if we can find the right trigger…”
“Great, we’re going to go underground,” Mywne complained, eyeing the floor warily. “Why can’t we ever explore a ruin above ground? Where there’s plenty of sunlight?”
“Sun’s going down, My. There won’t be any sunlight out here soon either, so we might as well.” The Yellow Bori paused in her examination of the floor. “Here we go!” She tapped a series of runes and immediately the floor began to sink, revealing a spiraling staircase leading down. “Shall we?”
“Ludroth, why don’t you go first,” Urasina instructed. “If there’s anything waiting for us you can shock them into submission. I’ll bring up the rear in case any of the creatures we just beat down decide they want seconds.”
The Darigan Peophin nodded and took the lead, Mywne following directly behind her.
Ven paused to gesture at the sky. “My sand storm won’t last too long once I’m underground, you know,” she informed Urasina.
“We’ll just have to find a defendable room to rest for the night then, won’t we?” the Speckled Uni said, smiling softly. “Don’t worry, Ven, we’ll be alright.”
Ven nodded and followed the Peophins down the stairs.
Urasina shot a glance outside as well. You couldn’t see the sun through the roaring sand, but her magic was tied to the light, and she could feel it setting as she joined her friends below. ‘Mywne’s right, being underground when the sun is gone is no fun for Light Magic users,’ she thought with a sigh. ‘I hope this artifact doesn’t take as long to find as the last one…’
