it's always very funny to me when white americans (or americans in general) talk about culture and reconnecting with their roots like "my italian ancestors" "my german ancestors" like those countries (or a lot of european nation states in general) and their respective national identities have always existed and been indigenous to those lands and aren't the invention of three guys from the 1860s
it's even funnier and equally enraging when the very act of reconnecting with those identities is seen as somehow inherently progressive because if you think that european nations, be it states or cultural minorities, are progressive it's like. LOL... and i'm not saying that it's a bad thing for white americans to reconnect with their heritage (quite the opposite), but that i really don't like the romanticization of that reconnection and heritage as something that's automatically revolutionary and that exempts you from whiteness. and unfortunately i don't see many white americans actually making an attempt to engage with the historical and current politics of the places they're originally from and think critically about that.
