“correction:   you   did   not   save   my   life,”   she   said,   voice   smooth   and   clinical.   “you   merely   ensured   the   universe   didn’t   lose   its   most   chronically   reckless   pilot   to   his   own   bad   decisions—this   time.”   her   gauntlet   tapped   against   the   console,   pulling   up   a   flight   log   with   a   quiet   disapproval.

“also,   for   the   record,   ‘human   intuition’   is   not   a   recognized  navigational  protocol.  neither  is—”   she   sighed. “—‘skedaddling.’”   she   finally   turned   her   head   toward   him,   visor   reflecting   @s4vior's   proud,   chaotic   grin.

❝  i was multitasking  !    ❞   Peter replies instantly, huffing out an air of frustration through flared nostrils. does she realize how skilled he is to have gotten out of this  ?   sometimes protocol gets people killed.   ❝  maybe you should recognize it ‘cause it just worked                        ❞   he interjects, the words coming out as a low, almost hummed murmur.

❝  the nickname was supposed to be funny. a joke  !   it sounds like they haven’t encountered jokes on Nemoros before, Lieutenant Obvious.  ❞   he adds while, surprisingly, obeying the order   &   slowing down considerably. now he is probably too slow.

he lets go of the controls   &   moves his arms as if he is a robot.   ❝  beep, boop. i’m Lieutenant Zephyxis, i love being right about everything. zzzzp, zzzp.  ❞   oh, he has so many regrets.   ❝  i don’t mean any offense. this is a common defense mechanism called ‘sarcasm’. it’s an incurable condition.  ❞   maybe he should give her a break for calling him Star-Lord after all.

Zephyxis  doesn’t  look  at  him  at  first.  her  hands  remain  steady  on  the  auxiliary  console,  white-and-black  gauntlets  reflecting  the  starlight  bleeding  in  through  the  viewport.  ALIGN  hums  softly  in  her  ear,  recalibrating  course  parameters  Peter  very  generously  scrambled.  only  when  the  ship  levels  out  does  she  turn  her  helmet  slightly  toward  him.

“sarcasm  noted.  logged.  categorized  as  non-essential  noise,”  she  says  coolly.  then,  without  missing  a  breath—her  gaze  lingers  just  long  enough  to  be  uncomfortable.  “multitasking  is  admirable,”  Zeph  says  evenly,  tone  clipped  but  not  unkind,  “when  it  does  not  involve  ricocheting  a  multi-ton  vessel  through  unstable  debris  fields  on  ‘human  intuition.’”  she  pauses.  “that  instinct  has  a  ninety-two  percent  fatality  rate  across  recorded  cases.”

she  turns  back  to  the  console.  “we  have  approximately  four-point-three  light-minutes  remaining  at  your  current  speed.”  a  faint  shift,  almost  a  concession,  “at  optimal  velocity,  that  becomes  two-point-one.  I  recommend  we  arrive  before  a  missing-asset  report  is  filed…  or  before  you  invent  another  coping  mechanism.”

at  his  last  question,  her  fingers  still.  “and  no.  you  will  not  be  receiving  a  medal,  Star-Lord.  at  best,  you  will  receive  a  footnote.”  she  adds  without  looking  at  him, 

ALIGN  pings  softly.  “𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗  𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟  𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗.  𝗦𝗨𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗦𝗧  𝗣𝗜𝗟𝗢𝗧  𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦  𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠  𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘  𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘.”  Zephyxis  exhales  through  her  nose.  “…how  many  more  theatrics  do  you  have  left  before  we  reach  the  drop  point  or  should  I  take  the  controls?”  her  tone  is  annoyed.  professional.  deadly  serious.

then  her  gaze  shifts  back  to  the  forward  viewport,  to  the  planet  slowly  swelling  into  view  —  a  molten-veined  sphere  banded  with  mineral-rich  fault  lines,  beautiful  in  a  way  that  feels  deeply  wrong.

the  transport  settled  on  the  landing  pad  with  all  the  subtlety  of  a  blade  sliding  into  place—silent,  precise.  ZEPHYXIS  stepped  out  first.  her  armor  wasn’t  the  heavy  kind  the  stormtroopers  wore  but  the  sleek,  reinforced  prototype  issued  only  to  Imperial  Security  Bureau  contractors—white  plates  with  obsidian  lines  cutting  clean  geometry  across  her  frame.  the  kind  of  uniform  reserved  for  someone  being  tested,  not  trusted.

beside  her,  the  wind  carried  the  low  murmur  of  a  displaced  city.  rioters  funneled  into  choke  points.  the  EMPIRE’s  fingerprints  smeared  across  every  wall,  every  rooftop.  and  somewhere  in  all  of  that—one  scientist,  one  leak,  one  man  too  valuable  to  simply  eliminate.

the  reason  she  was  here.  tapping  the  side  of  her  helmet;  the  upper  plate  folded  down  over  her  face  with  a  soft  mechanical  hiss.  𝙾𝙽𝙻𝙸𝙽𝙴. target  parameters  populate  her  HUD  in  clean  red  script.

“Imperial  Security  dispatch:  ZEPHYXIS  reporting  for  evaluation,”  she  echoed,  voice  modulated  and  crisp.  her  gaze  flicked  toward  the  occupied  streets,  the  tension  coiling  like  a  fuse  waiting  to  be  lit.  “the  objective  is  to  locate  and  retrieve  the  missing  asset.  and  to  ensure  nothing…  leaks.”

the  last  word  was  mechanical,  clinical—yet  sharp  enough  to  hint  she  already  knew  exactly  how  catastrophic  this  could  become.  she  straightened,  plasma  blades  shimmering  faintly  along  her  forearm  gauntlets  in  idle  standby  mode.

somewhere  deep  in  the  city  below,  the  first  sparks  of  unrest  crackled—waiting  for  someone  like  ORSON  KRENNIC  to  turn  tension  into  a  weapon…  and  someone  like  ZEPHYXIS  to  enforce  it.

the  city  folded  like  a  maze  designed  for  the  unprepared.  for  her,  however,  it was  simply  terrain.  ALIGN  parsed  every  alley,  every  heat  signature,  every  tremor  of  movement.

𝘛𝘈𝘙𝘎𝘌𝘛  𝘓𝘐𝘒𝘌𝘓𝘐𝘏𝘖𝘖𝘋.  𝟪𝟩%  —  𝘌𝘈𝘚𝘛  𝘙𝘌𝘚𝘐𝘋𝘌𝘕𝘛𝘐𝘈𝘓  𝘉𝘓𝘖𝘊𝘒.  𝘞𝘈𝘙𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎:  𝘏𝘖𝘚𝘛𝘐𝘓𝘌  𝘈𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘠  𝘋𝘌𝘛𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘌𝘋.

ZEPHYXIS  moved,  her  steps  are  soundless  on  the  duracrete,  armor  shifting  with  quiet  pneumatic  precision.  civilians  glanced  her  way  and  then  quickly  pretended  they  didn’t.  The  EMPIRE  has  taught  them  all  the  shape  of  fear.

a  door  slammed  somewhere  deeper  in  the  complex.  ALIGN  pinged  the  direction  and  ZEPHYXIS  followed  to  an  abandoned  workshop,  the  ‘asset’—a  balding  scientist  in  soot-stained  clothes—scrambled  through  scattered  datapads  and  half-packed  crates.  he  froze  when  he  saw  her  in  the  doorway,  haloed  by  the  flickering  light.

“I  won’t  be  part  of  that  project.  I  won’t—”  he  breathed,  backing  away. 

“your  refusal  is  noted,”  ZEPHYXIS answered  calmly.  “however,  irrelevant.  you’ve  been  classified  as  a  security  breach.”

the  scientist  lunged  for  the  back  exit.  ZEPHYXIS  didn’t  move  for  half  a  second—just  long  enough  to  calculate  his  trajectory.  then  the  upper  part  of  her  helmet  sealed  with  a  click.  the  plasma  blade  arced  to  life  along  her  forearm—white-hot,  a  clean  razor  edge  humming  in  the  dim.

one  step.  one  strike.

and  the  scientist  collapsed,  the  blade  having  cut  cleanly  through  the  weapon  he’d  tried  to  raise,  leaving  him  disarmed,  trembling,  and  very  alive—but  very  incapable  of  running  again.

she  taped  her  comm-link.  “director,”  voice  like  polished  steel,  “the  asset  has  been  neutralized  and  secured  for  retrieval.  no  further  leakage  anticipated.”

her  visor  glowed  faintly  as  ALIGN  confirmed  the  feed  and  locks  the  coordinates  to  Imperial  reinforcements.  ZEPHYXIS  looked  down  at  the  terrified  man—no  malice  in  her  posture,  no  triumph. just duty.

 just  the  Empire’s  mandate  made  flesh. 

“cooperate,”  she  said,  “and  you  will  survive  transport.”  outside, the unrest stirred louder—like a storm beginning its spiral. ZEPHYXIS activated  her  beacon  and  stood  guard  over  the  subdued  scientist,  awaiting  KRENNIC’s  arrival.

the  trial  run,  by  all  metrics,  was  going  flawlessly.  securing  the  scientist  should  have  been  the  end  of  it.  but  ALIGN  flashed  a  warning  across  her  visor:

𝘜𝘕𝘈𝘜𝘛𝘏𝘖𝘙𝘐𝘡𝘌𝘋  𝘚𝘐𝘎𝘕𝘈𝘓  𝘐𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘊𝘌𝘗𝘛  —  𝘚𝘖𝘜𝘙𝘊𝘌  𝘜𝘕𝘒𝘕𝘖𝘞𝘕.  𝘗𝘖𝘚𝘚𝘐𝘉𝘓𝘌  𝘊𝘖𝘜𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘙-𝘐𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘓𝘓𝘐𝘎𝘌𝘕𝘊𝘌  𝘈𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘠.

ZEPHYXIS stood  still.  faint  click  echoed  through  the  workshop  walls.  not  a  weapon.  a  transmitter.  someone  else  was  listening.  she  dragged  the  scientist  to  cover  just  as  a  hidden  holo-projector  activated  on  the  far  wall—grainy,  distorted,  voice  scrambled  through  a  modulator:

“Imperial  lapdog!  you  think  you’ve  won?  we’ve  been  watching  you.”  the  transmission  cut  before  ALIGN  could  trace  it.  another  obstacle  appeared;  a  decoy  heat  signature  in  the  adjoining  corridor  mimicking  a  humanoid  run  pattern…  but  flickering  too  consistently,  too  rhythmically.

ZEPHYXIS  ignored  it.  instead  she  scanned  the  ceiling—just  as  a  small  detonation  charge  blinked  to  life  above  her,  rigged  to  bury  the  room  in  rubble.  “shit.”  she  murmured  and  hurled  the  scientist  under  a  reinforced  workbench,  bracing  herself  and  fired  a  precise  plasma  pulse  that  detonated  the  charge  early—before  its  full  power  armed.

the  ceiling  cracked,  dust  raining  over  her  armor  but  the  room  held.  ALIGN  pinged  again:

𝘔𝘖𝘝𝘌𝘔𝘌𝘕𝘛  𝘋𝘌𝘛𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘌𝘋  —  𝘌𝘟𝘐𝘛  𝘙𝘖𝘜𝘛𝘌  𝘊𝘖𝘔𝘗𝘙𝘖𝘔𝘐𝘚𝘌𝘋.  𝘔𝘜𝘓𝘛𝘐𝘗𝘓𝘌  𝘏𝘖𝘚𝘛𝘐𝘓𝘌𝘚.  𝘏𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘓𝘠  𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘐𝘕𝘌𝘋.

and  that  was  when  ZEPHYXIS  realized—this  wasn’t  just  a  runaway  scientist.  he  had  help.  smart  help.  three  shadows  slipped  through  the  smoke—saboteurs,  masked,  silent,  their  weapons  fitted  with  suppressors  and  non-reflective  plating.  professionals.

one  lunged. ZEPHYXIS  pivoted,  helmet  sealing  with  a  hiss,  plasma  blade  igniting  along  her  arm.  they  expected  a  stormtrooper.  they  got  her.

the  first  attacker  dropped,  blade  slicing  clean  through  his  weapon.  the  second  kept  distance,  tried  to  override  her  suit  remotely—ALIGN  slammed  the  intrusion  attempt  with  a  hard  firewall  spike.

𝘐𝘕𝘛𝘙𝘜𝘚𝘐𝘖𝘕  𝘊𝘖𝘜𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘌𝘋.  𝘚𝘜𝘎𝘎𝘌𝘚𝘛  𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘔𝘐𝘕𝘈𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕  𝘖𝘍  𝘚𝘖𝘜𝘙𝘊𝘌.

she  obliged.  the  third  bolted  for  the  emergency  access  shaft.  too  late.  ZEPHYXIS  fired  a  grappling  module  from  her  wrist—the  line  caught  his  ankle,  yanking  him  off  balance.  he  hit  the  floor  hard,  disarmed  before  he  could  scream.

under thirty seconds, all three lie incapacitated.  she  dragged  them  into  a  line  for  retrieval,  then nudged the  scientist  upright.  “your  allies  are  resourceful,”  she  said.  “resourcefulness,  however,  does  not  guarantee  success.”

     His  reading  was  interrupted  at  the  burst  of  static  as  Zephyxis  began  her  report.     Krennic  tapped  a  button,      “  Excellent  work,  ”      he  replied  in  response  while  rising  from  his  chair.      “  Ensure  that  our  guest  is  awake  for  further  questioning.     We’re  on  our  way.  ”

    Raised  forefinger  wordlessly  gestured  in  a  circle  and  all  but  three  of  his  men  halted  their  search.        “  Now,   ladies  and  gentlemen,  ”      the  Director  addressed  the  staff  with  a  smile  that  did  not  reach  his  pointed  stare.      “  Unfortunately  the  premise  has  been  placed  under  LOCKDOWN  until  further  notice.      You’ll  remain  here  for  your  SAFETY  until  we’re  sure  that  the  responsible  culprits  have  been  arrested.     I  ask  that  you  cooperate  with  all  ISB  personnel  —  any  assistance  on  your  end  to  lighten  the  burden  of  our  hardworking  officers  would  be  handsomely  rewarded.     If  not,   then  at  the  very  least,   refrain  from  anything  foolish.  ”

    It  was  a  fair  bargain,   he  supposed,   eyeing  their  collectively  frightened  visage.     The  unremarkable  lacked  courage  and  initiative;     their  vacuous  minds  skewed  towards  simplicity  rather  than  any  abstraction  of  justice  or  duty.     Perhaps  the  possibility  of  a  reward  would  shine  a  light  upon  the  snivelling  rats  in  the  dark.  

    His  troopers  followed  nearby  as  they  exited,   their  presence  substituted  by  an  ISB  supervisor  instead.     Krennic’s  comm  burst  to  life  once  more  as  they  sped  towards  the  activated  beacon.      “  More  of  them?  ”      the  Director’s  forehead  creased  as  he  frowned  at  the  news.     The  project,   gargantuan  as  it  was,   inevitably  brought  forth  rogue  individuals  who,   for  whatever  inane  reason,   chose  absconsion  over  duty.     Neither  threats  nor  rewards  worked  to  avert  its  risk.      “  I  hope  the  site  has  been  secured  by  the  time  we’ve  arrived.     I’m  sure  you’ll  understand  that  I’m  not  in  the  mood  for  further  surprises.     My  men  will  consider  it  an  active  hostile  zone  until  further  notice.  ”

her gaze cut to the trembling scientist she'd secured,  still kneeling where she had planted him minutes  earlier.  "he  remains coherent  enough for questioning.  you'll have what you need from him." only then did she return her attention fully to Krennic.  his grin, sharp & self-satisfied,  reflected faintly in the polished white of her armor.  "if this qualifies as a light exercise,  Director…  then I welcome the next trial."  she dipped her chin in acknowledgment.
