being approached by anyone, even those he was familiar with, had always made him so uncomfortable. at some point in his life, cloud found it easier to isolate himself from people rather than make real connections. easier, but not what he desired. getting close to people had never been easy, and avoiding them had been easier than having to open up or try to trust someone, only for them to break that trust that had been built up. too many times had he tried, only to be severely let down. cloud preferred not to bother anymore.Â
ânot that iâd tell you,â he snaps pretty easily, his tone clipped as he stepped away from the male, âiâll be fine.âÂ
kuroo quirked a brow. he never liked to pry, even though he was sure something was up. âall right, all right, i got you. if it makes you feel any better, if itâs a headache...iâve been getting âem, too. you want anything from in here? i can get you a water or something.â all right, so kuroo had been toldâwith varying degrees of kindnessâthat his tendency to not shut up was less than endearing. he could do with talking a bit less, but eh, he liked to think it was part of his charm.
the comment made the gentleman chuckle from among the leaves, knowing anyone who heâd have stopped wouldâve had about the same response. â well, iâm only putting them up ! â he added. â the second-graders made them all by hand. â a slight pause as he finished tying the string, then, â okay, maybe i did make a few. â he was kind of a sucker for arts and crafts, especially with little kids - what could he say ?
carefully he made his way down one step, crouching low and taking the little ghost kuroo was holding out to him in hand. â thank you. â as carefully as he stepped down, he went back up, tying his last little ghost on the branch around the others. each were different, in their own small way - one with google eyes, one with a glitter tissue, one with a red string instead of a white. these were very obviously made by children under the age of ten, but that was part of them charm. â mine are a few trees back, but they werenât anything too special. i just liked getting to do them with the kids. â sitting in the overly-tiny chairs, using extremely small desks, having all the little ones surrounding him and peppering him with questions; in another life he thought heâd be a great teacher.
the actual teacher just below him was incredibly kind, offering his help. â itâd be a great help, â he began humbly, â but i donât want to pull you away from anything. â there was another box of the ghosts in his car - which was parked not far off - and the whole other side of the street that had to be done before the end of the day. â it doesnât take long, tying up these little guys, but thereâs still a bit to be done. â this wasnât him trying to discourage the other, of course, more just try to tell him what heâd be in for. â you sure you wanna spend a few hours with me ? â there it was, though, a dash of humor to keep things light and airy, as he slowly stepped down from the ladder once again, finally to come back down to earth.
they were charming little things, each with their own quirks to reflect their makers. kuroo couldnât remember the last time heâd sat down and made an arts-and-crafts project like this. and maybe, he thought, watching the mayorâs assistant cheerily hanging them up in the trees, it might do him good to try it again. he loved how entertaining the high schoolers were, but so much of their lives by this point had begun to revolve around realistic plans for the future, and that was kind of sad to see. the younger kids, if they planned at all, werenât constrained by thoughts of ârealismâ and âpracticalityâ and âmaking a living.â
âoh, donât mind, you wouldnât be pulling me away from anything. iâm done for the day,â kuroo told him. âmany hands make light work, like my aunt always says. where are the others? i can get a head start...and you keep the ladder. iâll just climb up the trees!â
SEBASTIAN SMYTHE  & KUROO TETSUROU,  @nekotetsuchanââ.
location:Â coffee shop near kurooâs work.
SEBASTIANâS SMILE DOESNâT REACH HIS EYES.  it never really did,  only has vague memories of the last times heâs smiled and actually meant it.  smiles born from actual,  genuine  â  innocent â joy.  but he hasnât been innocent in what feels like years. he knows that heâs had happy moments, sure. but they were fleeting. just echoes of an emotion that didnât stay long enough for him to memorise the feeling. heâs done a great job at fooling himself to be happy,  though.  can play the role well,  enough to convince himself at least.  that heâs happy with the way things are.  that heâs satisfied with the way things are.
BUT HAS HE EVER ACTUALLY QUESTIONED if any of this has been worth it ?  if heâs wasted years of his life and still isnât happy,  still isnât satisfied,  then fuck  â  doesnât that mean heâll never be satisfied  ? heâs spent so much of his life on getting good grades, working hard to get further, but is anything really ever gonna be enough for him  ?  when heâs not even enough for himself  ?
HE HATES BEING WEAK AROUND ANYONE.  just another reason why he and tetsurou hadnât worked out.  and even if he understands that their break up was amicable,  could it actually have been fixed  ?  was there anything about their relationship that had been redeemable  ?  maybe thatâs why heâs found himself here,  having texted tetsurou if they could meet up. Â
BUT WHEN HE SEES TETSUROU,  STANDING in front of him,  he feels his breath catch in his throat,  the words dying before he can even speak.  he looks away for a moment before greeting him,  â hey⌠ thanks for coming.  i know it wasâŚÂ â  unwarranted  ?  out of the blue  ?  â ⌠last minute. â
they werenât not friends, him and sebastian. they were just â whatever it was that made checking his phone on his lunch break to see a text from sebastian asking him to meet up surprising. even more surprising, kuroo had answered with a yes. he had practice later, but heâd be done by 5, so they set a time and a place. the total spontaneity reminded him of how they used to be â off the cuff, meeting up within an hourâs notice, wherever and whenever they both had the time. but this wasnât the same.Â
he left the school after a quick shower in the office, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder, and headed to the coffee shop closest to the school. and he realized, as he pushed the door open and spotted sebastian standing by the window, that he could have said no. he could have ignored the message. he could have said yes but not shown up. but he also realized that for him, for sebastian, that was never an option.Â
âhey.â his smile was soft. kuroo didnât think it could ever be anything but, whether they were friends or lovers or anything else. âdonât mind it. i didnât have plans. so...whatâs up? you getting anything to drink?â
ever since the night of the circus, cloudâs head had felt like it was full of mud. mud and complete agony. sleeping had become impossible, memories flooded with blurred out images and faces that felt so familiar but so lost. work had almost become impossible, the files on his desk gone ignored to the point he had gone sent home. cloud was a good detective, would drive that fact into his own head until it stuck. ever since that night he had been doubting himself, unable to do anything right. and the headache, the fucking headache. the one that persisted, drove deep into his skull and made it even more difficult to perform even the most simple task.Â
as he walks out from the cafĂŠ heâd gone to, he catches his reflection in a mirror on the way out. when thereâs glowing eyes looking back at him he stops, and then the headache overpowers everything in his body. do not worry⌠a whispered voice says beside him. or is it in his own head? everything around him disappears as the white noise full envelopes his body, a cold hand pressed to his forehead as he wills the noise away. soon the girl will become part of the planetâs energyâŚÂ
a gasp leaves cloudâs mouth as soon as the headache fades. it fades rather quickly compared to the length it had come. eyes to the floor, he realizes heâs been hunched over, his own hand pressed to his forehead. thereâs someone standing next to him and heâs vaguely aware theyâve said something. âiâm fine,â he tells them as he backs away from them, âiâm not a sideshow, ya know.â
kuroo had never been one to have headaches. not when he was sick, not when he was stressed, not before any standardized examânever. and yet, since heâd come out of the house of mirrors, heâd started having them. and they were never consistent. sometimes it was a dull ache in the back of his head, nagging him as he sketched up attack combinations for his team. sometimes it was more of a stabbing pain that came out of nowhere only to recede just as quickly. and from the looks of it, this man was experiencing something similar.Â
kuroo had just walked over, but before he could say a thing, the guy stands up. âoh, i know youâre not a sideshow. i sure as shit wouldnât pay to see anyone like this,â kuroo says lightly. âdonât know, you just looked like you needed some help. you okay?â and yet kuroo had a feeling he wasnât. that maybe heâs been having the same strange headaches kurooâs been having, that maybe he too is seeing moments from an existence he doesnât fully remember. âdoes this happen often?â

things in alucard were off. people werenât acting like they normally did, the weather had been weird and fluctuated wildly between a notch too warm and bone-chilling cold, even the animals around town were more skittish than usual. ever since the circus, heâd noticed the tonal shift, and his only thought was that with such excitement and fun taking up a whole weekend, the only thing they could all collectively do was come back down from that sort of mercurial high.
but that bad mood wouldnât bring jack down, especially not with it being so close to halloween. they were only thirty-two days away - just over a month ! and he was all ready up on a ladder, tying tiny little paper-mache ghosts that the schoolchildren made by hand up on the branches. decorating was one of his favorite parts of the holiday ( though, admittedly, he loved every part of halloween, right down to the candy corn ) and he was so glad heâd given all the gradeschool teachers the idea to help him with making decorations. because he could have done it himself, but it was better to get everyone involved, especially right now.
with being on the main walkway of the uptown shopping strip, he was being passed by quite a few people. but one passerby in particular had caught his attention - a familiar face, or an unfortunate soul about to get caught up in his enthusiasm and possibly helping, a friend was a friend, in his eyes.
â well hello there ! â was his warm greeting as he finished tying a white string. â theyâre pretty cute, arenât they ? perfect for fall. â there were all ready a handful of the ghosts in the tree, up high enough where they wouldnât accidentally get caught in someoneâs hair or knock them in the forehead. â would you actually mind passing me up one more from the box ? i think thereâs only one spot left up here, then i gotta move down lower. â the trees lining the walk were all speckled with little white tissues-ghosts, all his own proud handiwork.
kuroo did not like being in the dark about things. he couldnât explain the new vision in his head, or the strange mood that had seemed to settle over alucard in the wake of the circus, but what was he to do? regardless of whatever other life he was seeing whenever he closed his eyes, he had one here and now to focus on. there was homework to grade, lessons to plan, a team to coach. there were people counting on him and he couldnât allow himself to get lost in the unknown.Â
hands shoved into the pockets of a denim jacket and a shopping bag caught on his wrist, he made his way up the main strip, staring at the new decorations that had been put up. merry little ghosts strung up in the trees, swaying in the breeze; kuroo wasnât the biggest celebrant of halloween but he smiled anyway.Â
âmr. scareington! i shouldnât be surprised this was your work. it looks great,â kuroo called up to him, standing at the foot of the ladder. and yes, sure enough, at his feet was a box full of the tissue creations; he stooped down to pick one up and hand it to the mayorâs assistant. âneed help hanging them?â
SEBASTIAN WASNâT ACTUALLY ANTICIPATING running into his ex today,  but what are the chances that he and tetsurou both happened to go to the carnival at the same time? with his luck, he canât exactly say heâs actually that surprised though. and, if heâs being entirely transparent, itâs not as if seeing tetsurou is a bad thing. even after breaking up, that doesnât mean sebastian stopped caring about him. it was just⌠weird. at the near slip up, sebastian wants to wince but instead, he offers a tiny, amused smile.  â hey tetsurou, â he greets, and â after a quick decision to try and break the awkwardness,  â also iâm pretty sure that snow white didnât die from an apple. or else disneyâs got a lot of explaining to do. â
itâs a big enough town that kuroo can mostly avoid his ex, but the truth is that he doesnât always want to. sure, they had to call it quits, but that didnât mean kuroo didnât wonder what might have happened had they stuck it out. âwell â yeah, youâre right, she didnât die. thatâs not very disney. but i did watch a youtube video theorizing that snow was poisoned with atropa belladonna. and that it was actually the charcoal dust on the dwarves that saved her.â ah shit, heâs close to a chemistry rant again. at least itâs something to say. âare you...you having a nice time?â
âand thatâs when my coach was like, âyou guys canât go in the pool, the kids went in the pool last year and got a rash.ââ finished with yet another tale from his college volleyball days, kuroo paused to polish off the last of his beer, some local brew, or so heâd been told at the booth. âi mean, if everyone got a rash from the pool then i think you should like. tell the hotel or some shit. but yeah, thatâs why i donât like public pools. how did we got on the topic of public pools again?â
kuroo insisted, when asked, that he was a dog person. he did like cats very much, but if he could only have one, heâd choose a dog, and therefore he believed that made him a dog person. that said, he had a tendency to attract stray cats that was rather puzzling to him. âwell hello there,â he cooed to a little gray tabby that had marched up to him and started rubbing against his legs. âand where did you come from?â no collar or tag. was she lost? âcome on, why donât we see where you should be?â he scratched the top of her head, smiling as she headbutted his palm. fortunately, she followed him as he walked up to the first house he saw and knocked on the door. âhi, is this your cat?â he said to the person who opened the door.

there were a host of inopportune moments in which to see your ex, and kuroo tetsurou was currently smack in the middle of one. heâd taken too big a bite of a caramel apple, which resulted in him keeled over behind the ring toss both, coughing until he hacked up the chunk and spat it out into the dirt. he could hear footsteps, telling him someone had seen all or a part of his indignity. âsorry, you caught me almost dying from a candy apple. just call me snow white, death by apple,â he quips, finally standing up straight and realizing â âoh...hey, seba-châsebastian.â
đđđ  đđđđđđ  đđđđđđ  of  the  â  cirque  â  were amazing  to  christine  â  sheâd  never  been  to  something  like  this  before  ,  and  it  was  nice  to  get  away  from  rehearsing  and  school  .  she  smiled  brightly  ,  enjoyably  picking  off  bits  of  her  cotton  candy  and  popping  them  into  her  mouth  .  her  aunt  had  come  with  her  but  had  left  to  visit  with  some  friends  ,  leaving  christine  to  go  where  she  pleased  .  as  the  sugar  melted  in  her  mouth  she  stopped  in  front  of  the  carousal  .  the  last  time  she  was  on  a  carousal  was  with  her  mom  and  dad  â  she  remembered  it  being  fun  .  the  blonde  smiled  softly  .  â  the  line  doesnât  look  too  long  ,  â  she  said  to  herself  .
with a chocolate and m&m-covered apple in hand, kuroo felt like his night was starting to wind down. heâd thrown away his money at all of the games, sampled every fair food, and now this was the last thing to do. hey, it would be a good way to relax. he could sit in the little seat and munch on this apple. fortunately, by this time most of the families had gone home to tuck in, so he guessed he wouldnât have too long to wait. seems the woman in front of him had the same idea. âi think weâll be up next,â he agreed. âmy theory is that itâs âcause itâs late and all the kids went home. wow, i donât think iâve been on a carousel since i was like...six.â
⥠⥠⥠âĄÂ this wasnât a job that was meant to be impossible. actually, all things considered, it shouldâve been easy. easy if she had been a six foot four heavy weight champion, which wasnât something claire was about to admit outloud to anyone who told her â you may need help with that â. the stand wasnât a one person job but the brunette was determined in her battle to get it lifted. âyou ! yeah you !â as soon as someone came close, she ran up to them, grabbing their arm to get their attention, âmake yourself useful and give me a hand, wonât ya ? âÂ
needing a break from the hustle and bustle of the main parts of the carnival, kuroo had bought himself some fried dough and retreated to a quiet area. the moment someone grabs his arm, he promptly chokes on a piece of fried dough, coughing it out onto the ground by his feet. "shit, i am so sorry,â he apologizes profusely. âgive me a minute, iâll put this down and then help you. what do you need?â he finds a spot on the ground to put his plate that hopefully wonât be right in the path of a stampede of elephants and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. âall right, show me.â
to say that the circus arriving in town was a smash hit was an understatement - if you were to ask jack, of course. everyone in alucard seemed to be there, from the smallest child running through the beaten-dirt pathways with their balloons to the elderly couples holding hands and glowing with excitement under the blinking golden bulbs. familiar faces and new alike were among the line queues and crowds - people from out of town, those who worked at the circus itself, alucard residents heâd known since they arrived.
the face in front of him was one he was happy to see there, just as he was all the other faces around.
â iâd go in for a customary hug, but you might not want to touch me, â he began with a laugh, it a pleasant, warm sound, fitting the atmosphere. â iâm covered in spun sugar. â he hadnât gotten to stop and actually do much in the way of games or rides; most of his time had been spent working at different booths for fun, to help out, to get his face out there. he was showing that the town cared about its volunteers and small businesses as much as he was doing it for his own version of fun. him and the other had found each other just after his forty minutes at the cotton candy stall; now he smelled of warm sugar and vanilla.
â hello. â his greeting ended with a little huff and a smile that showed he wasnât really all that upset about being covered in candyfloss - maybe upset he couldnât hug the other, then. â howâs your night going ? are you having fun ? â there was almost a tinge of something like concern in his voice, like he really didnât want to hear about them not having a good time. ( not because he didnât want to hear it, of course, jack was not a mean mean, but rather he always hoped he was doing a good job. that, and knew if the other wasnât having a good time, heâd do everything in his power to try and make it better, and some found that⌠overbearing to say the least. )
â kuroo could say he was quite pleased at seeing so many of his students here, applying the physics-based tips heâd offered the day before in class to help them win at the carnival games. he spotted a few walking around with large stuffed animal prizes, though he didnât approach them â when he was their age, he hated seeing his teachers in public, too. his students aside, it seemed like everyone in town was out tonight. back in his hometown, whenever a carnival came, maybe only half the town came and it was never the half heâd have liked to see. and â oh yes, the mayorâs assistant was out and about.Â
âmr. scareington!â kuroo greeted him with a smile. âi donât mind. i like a little sugar in my life.â it wasnât said in a flirtatious manner â just a cheesy little joke said without thinking. âitâs going well. this carnival is really something.â kuroo paused, attention temporarily grabbed by a commotion over at the ring toss â seems someone won the grand prize. âwas that you i spotted at the ring toss booth an hour or two ago? youâve been busier than anyone tonight.â
â the mirrors surrounding you did as they were meant to, reflecting back a spitting image of KONDOU SHOURI - but itâs clear something is wrong from the moment that a vision of LOSING TO KARASUNO AT NATIONALS strikes you. perhaps it was a passing daydream in the frenzy of the funhouse. you reassure yourself - youâre KUROO TETSUROU, a TWENTY-SEVEN YEAR OLD  TEACHER whose virtue lies in your + INTELLIGENCE & + PERCEPTION, although youâve been told that you tend to be quite - PURPOSELY PROVOCATIVE & - CHILDISH, and youâre associated with CHEMISTRY PUNS, BLACK CATS KNOCKING EVERYTHING OFF YOUR DESK BEFORE RUNNING AWAY NEVER TO BE FOUND AGAIN, & A CACKLING LAUGH by those around you. suddenly, however, youâve found THE NEKOMA CAPTAIN'S JERSEY on your person - was that always there? from the moment you leave the funhouse, memories from your life in HAIKYUU have begun to return - leaving whoever you had been before in the mirrorâs reflection behind you. you can almost hear BAIL ME OUT by ALL TIME LOW following in your wake. â IN ALUCARD.
kuroo tetsurou would tell you he had an unremarkable childhood. he grew up in a small commuter town in new york about an hour and a half from the city, he liked science and volleyball, and he LOVED getting sushi from the japanese restaurant a few towns over.Â
what he wonât tell you is that growing up, his name was theodore âted/teddyâ pesci.
adopted from japan before he was a year old, kuroo grew up in a very white town, largely disconnected from his birth culture. as far as he was concerned, he thought he was white too, but he didnât understand why everyone said he looked different.Â
after years of feeling not quite right, when he was 14, he finally decided to commit to being, as he thought of it, âan actual japanese person.â he studied japanese, becoming fluent before he graduated, he got into j-rock, he learned how to cook a few japanese dishes, and he started reading shonen jump. he went back to using his birth name of kuroo tetsurou (and he ordered it the way itâs meant to be â family name, then given name. only a handful of people got to call him tetsurou.) it wasnât much, but it was a way for him to feel more connected.Â
he went to college in the city, double-majoring in biochemistry and education and minoring in japanese. he joined some asian student groups where finally, he was around people who looked like him. it was here where kuroo met his first serious girlfriend; they met in, of all places, a kpop dance club and started dating soon after. she got a job in philadelphia after graduation, so kuroo moved with her. young as they were, he was thinking about proposing. he found a job teaching at a middle school in the city, and things were good.
but it wasnât to last. they broke up less than four months later, having differing views on a future together, and though they agreed to remain friends, they didnât. kuroo moved out to alucard after they broke up, and heâs been here ever since.Â
now 27 (nearing 28), kuroo has settled into this town and his job, teaching japanese and science and coaching the boysâ volleyball team. he has a small apartment to himself, stray cats that come and visit, and a job he likes; he can be content.Â
that is, until the day a strange volleyball jersey shows up in his closet. nekoma, it says, and it has the number 1. and thatâs when he starts to see things, to have flashes of memories in places and with people he doesnât recognize.Â
â IN ANOTHER LIFE.
somewhere, in a parallel universe, lives another kuroo tetsurou. this other kuroo tetsurou would be born and raised not in new york, but in tokyo, japan. he would meet his best friend at the age of eight and learn to play volleyball, and heâd become captain and take his team to nationals. theyâd call him rooster head because of his untameable bedhead, the scheming captain for his sharp wit on the court, pain-in-the-ass kuroo-san. heâd have a friendly rivalry with a crow captain from a school way in the north and tease him about being a country boy, and heâd have a best bro whoâs a captain at another tokyo school and get into all sorts of mischief with him. heâd take a first-year middle blocker under his wing and help him find his love for volleyball. heâd play his heart out until he couldnât anymore, but loath to walk away from the game, heâd become a promoter for the japan volleyball association. his friends would come and go, moving around the country and even around the world, and heâd get to travel too, seeing places heâs only dreamed of. and heâd be content.

me, rolling in with a red gatorade when i should be working? more likely than you think!! hereâs one (1) city dumpster cat to start with~
â KUROO TETSUROU, HAIKYUU, 27, TEACHER
a science/japanese teacher-slash-volleyball coach at belvedere academy, kuroo spends about 75% of his time at or near the school. he loves what he does with all his heart and generally seems pretty cool â until he opens his mouth and talks. or worse, laughs.Â
possible connections ~
platonicÂ
coworkers: i dunno if anyone else works at the school but !!
childhood friends
unlikely friends
an employee at his favorite coffee shop, perhaps? that heâd see like clockwork every morning?
an old rival: knowing kuroo this would most likely be an academic or a volleyball rival. maybe theyâre on good terms now? maybe theyâre still lowkey (or highkey) competing?
maybe heâs someoneâs mentor??
neighbors!!
a volleyball buddy pls??
ok this is wild but like i like to think kuroo attracts stray cats so maybe thereâs one stray that comes to his door every nighat nd heâll feed them and stuff but then one day he finds out sheâs been cheating on him (aka just going to someone elseâs apartment for food and pets)Â â and thatâs how he meets this person
romantic
exes: ex-flings! ex-lovers! ex-anything! kuroo is Bi af so thatâs very openÂ
fwb: because honestly, kuroo is married to his job. which he doesnât mind. but that usually means heâs only got time for a hookup here and there, when heâs not Exhausted
flirtationship: more like kuroo uses chemistry-themed pickup lines, to varying degrees of success. someone out thereâs gotta like it, right??
ahh these are just some starting points, iâm down to brainstorm and think of some other fun stuff! like this and iâll dm u here or on discord
