Bathing in it with every puff. Leaning a bit to the side, he laid eyes on the side of your desk from his point of view. An empty desk now. Tapping his finger thoughtfully on the arm of his chair. 

Placing the cigarette between his lips. Pulling a drawer open. Quirking his brows up at the masked face staring back at him. Taking his cigarette out, smoke filled the air. Sighing deep at what it had become. How easily he was drawn to it once more. 

After 5 years of neglecting it. Ignoring it. At the opening of the door, he shoved the drawer shut with a loud thud. “Robbie?” Reilly called out from upon his office. Robbie made his way over, eyeing your empty desk for a moment. Almost breathlessly he entered. “Whe…where’s Y/n?” Asking with a slight point. 

“I’ve sent her for an errand.” Reilly filled in, dipping his cigarette out. “Is…is she alright?” Robbie hoped the answer would be civil. Scratching the back of his head nervously. Reilly batted his gaze down, folding his hands together.

His desk shifted down a bit to the right side. “A bit shaken, but she will be alright.” Reilly replied. “Where the damn hell were you?” Robbie called out, getting closer with a fury. Reilly’s gaze avoided his. “With…Cat…” Reilly confessed a bit shyly. 

“The singer?” Robbie picked up with a sharp tone in his voice. Baffled, he puffed out a breath. Wiping his palm down his mouth to his chin. “So what are you going to do about it?” Humming loud at the end of his sentence. Setting his hands down on the desk. Furrowing his brows when he felt the unevenness of the desk under his palms. 

“Ben!” Shouting loud with a firm punch when he lingered on the question. “Silvermane’s men barged into your office. Threatened Y/n with a gun!” His eyes widening with tellings at his own words. Robbie came leaning more over the desk. Making Reilly swallow nervously, trying to avoid his hard stare. 

“You’ve neglected your duties for far too long, friend.” His words carried disappointment. Reilly went uncomfortable with the idea. It tasted bad in his mouth, but he was already a step ahead of Robbie. Pulling the drawer open, he tossed the mask on the desk. Sighing loud, pinching his nosebridge. 

Robbie gazed at the Spider’s mask. “You will hold yourself onto this!” Not much of an ask more a demand. Reilly nodded, slipping the mask away. A moment later the door opened. Robbie straightened his posture, turning more to the door. 

Your eyes widened briefly at the sight of your guest. “Oh, Robbie.” You called out. Going towards your desk, you placed the package down. “Y/n, we’re going for a drink.” Robbie called out, coming your way. Slipping an arm over you, drawing you away from your desk. Glancing over his shoulder, he eyed Reilly from afar. 

“Ben’s treat!” Moving his hand up to thank him for being oh so generous. “But…are you sure…” You muttered out, slightly confused. “Please Y/n.” Reilly called out, standing up behind his desk. Chuckling half forced. “I insist.” Waving the two of you out. Glaring at Robbie for forcing him in a corner. 

Ben was surprised how easily the mask slipped on. Certainly upon seeing the car drive by. The car that held his prize. Jaw tensed, hand clenched to a fist. Flashes of the state how he found you, haunting his mind. Pushing them to the back of his mind, he knelt down. 

Grabbing onto the railing of the building he stood upon. Two more cars rode in sight. Moving his hand forwards, a web shot out. Letting it carry him, swinging down. Body crashing onto the top of the car. Web snapped. Rolling over, grabbing the side firmly before he could be swung over it. Lifting his upper body up with a soft groan. 

Touching his chest with a nod of his head. He still had it. The tingle in his neck came before he felt the little hairs rise up. Touching his neck for a millisecond before the man’s face appeared. Eyes widening at the confrontation with the Spider on top of the car. The man reached down for his weapon. 

Just as the tip rose over the edge, the Spider shot a web at it. Web attaching fully around the loop. With the flick of his wrist it flung somewhere behind him. Shooting another web, it enclosed around the man’s face. Muffled groans. Man losing his balance, falling backwards onto hard concrete. 

Shots fired, Spider ducking down. Glancing to his side. Seeing from the car behind him they were shooting at him. The Spider pulled his hand down through the window below. Shooting blindly at the steering wheel. Man screaming loud, hands glued in between. Car swaying from left to right. The Spider grabbed for the edge in a haste. Legs swaying over the edge. 

Lifting his legs up at the fire of bullets. Hand out, he let the web swallow the hood of the car. Pulling hard at it, the car flipped. Flying above his head, coming to crash down just up ahead. Letting go of the car, he rolled over the ground. Walking over to the only car that had stopped. Two men walked out with shaky legs. It was almost laughable. The Spider snatched their weapons easily out of their grips. As easy as snatching candy from a child. 

The men took a run for it. The Spider hummed humorously. Strutting over to the single standing car. Swinging the door open with force. “Mind if I sit?” Voice deeper than normal. Without waiting for the invitation he seated himself down with a loud sigh.

“It’s been a while.” Silvermane stated, reaching for a drink. “You’ve done well without me around, haven’t you.” The Spider spoke. “I didn’t know you did hit jobs now.” Silvermane responded, moving his glass up to his mouth. “Do you mind if I ask you, who hired you?” 

“Nobody hires me.” The Spider responded. “I’m here because of Ben Reilly.” Slightly tilting his head. Silvermane’s gaze furrowing with slight confusion. “Reilly the flatfoot?” Silvermane slipped an insult out.

“Yeah, that’s right. I owe him a favour.” The Spider replied. “I’m sorry, where are my manners, do you want a drink?” Silverman easily changed subjects. “No!” The Spider said loud and clear. “I want you and your goons to lay off Reilly.” 

Silvermane’s upper lip pulled up in confusion. “He doesn’t know who tried to kill you, and roughening up a secretary isn’t going to change that.” 

“So you’re here about the secretary?” Silvermane asked with deep furrowed brows. “Yes.” The Spider made clear. Silvermane took a soft breath, clasping his hands together. “So, we leave the secretary alone, and that’s it?” The distrust clear in his voice. 

“Cuz you know back in the day you really couldn’t leave me alone, could you?” He went on. “I don’t think you’re listening to me.” The Spider responded stating his previous request with much interest. “This is your only warning. If you mess with Reilly or any of his people,” Raising his finger with a point. “I will kill you.” Leaving the car with a firm shut of the door. 

Out of sight, he pulled off the mask. Staring down at it, fingers feeling over the fabric. Almost forgotten how much power it gave him. Tugging it away, he hoped he didn’t have to bring him up any more times. Rather still keen on keeping him buried away. Yet he couldn’t deny how great it felt to abuse his character to state a point. 

You got up when Mr. Reilly entered the bureau once more. “How…how was your drink with Robbie?” He asked, hanging his coat away. You came sitting at the edge of your desk. “It was nice. I haven’t had such a good time in a long time.” Confessing with a soft smile.

Reilly neared you, smiling faintly back at you. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.” Saying quick as a passing. Grabbing his sleeve by the wrist, you prevented him from walking away. “I know he did it to bring my mind off it.” It was as clear as day, his intentions to distract you. 

Reilly exhaled softly. “You…you don’t have to worry about them anymore.” Reilly spoke. Gaze hardened on him with confusion and worry. “What did you do?” Needing to know he didn’t put him in more danger just for your sake. Baffled, you quirked your brow up at his chuckling.

“Ben, I swear…” You began, getting slightly frustrated. Reilly laughed softly, seeing how worked up you were getting over it. Slowly beginning to recognize you only referred to him by his first name when you were cross with him. “I only had a chat with Silvermane.” He assured you. 

“You? A chat with Silvermane?” It almost seemed laughable to you. Reilly slipped his hands down your arms. “You’ll have to trust me Y/n.” Saying with a charming smile. Thoughtfully your forehead showed slight wrinkles. “I never asked you to…” Outing this desperation that you never want to force his hand.

“I know.” Reilly whispered back. Coming to lean in closer. Nearing your head, coming in so naturally, he paused upon knowing what he was about to do. Brows furrowing with a concerning smile. Clearing his throat, pulling quickly away. 

Giving your arms an awkward pat. Flashing you an uncertain smile. Avoiding your gaze immediately, heading for his desk. Touching his forehead in a slight distress. Knowing it was close. Close to having almost kissed your head.
