the most satisfying skill you can learn as a visibly disabled person (especially a YOUNG visibly disabled person) is to stare right the fuck back. I know it’s scary because people are judgy af and you want to avoid the attention but I PROMISE YOU. people are awkward as hell when they get caught. it is SO worth it to watch a man who’s like a foot taller than me, at least ten years older, and really buff, duck his head and look away because I refused to break eye contact first.

To be clear what I'm attempting to say is that we can make a critical analysis of the fact that romantic love is perhaps a thematic priority of the arts and our consumption of it that has been passed down from more conservative times, without implying that everyone who enjoys shipping culture is incapable of a more pure media analysis let alone self indulging in a way that is harmful to society and the arts as a whole. Or acting like shipping results in an automatic invalidation towards experiences and identities in the aroace spectrum, as long as these are not a textual element of the corresponding art piece.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

Something they never tell you about being an adult is the power of just being The Person Who Reliably Shows Up. Even if you don’t think you have much to bring to the table except being kind to people, wanting to learn, and contributing when you can. Many of the good things that have happened to me and many of the connections I’ve made have been because I just kept showing up and people were like, whelp, I guess we can’t get rid of your ass and now you’re a load bearing part of the community
