Since April, I have been learning German.

―― 「それでもやっぱり」の、豊かなまわり道

「NetflixやAmazon Primeの方が安いし、返し忘れて延滞料金を払う心配もないのに」――きっと、多くの方はそうおっしゃるでしょう。それでも私は、あえて重い腰を上げてレンタルビデオ店へ向かい、DVDを借りることにしています。なぜなら、「有限であるからこそ、より豊かに生きられる」という大切なことを、あの空間が教えてくれたからです。今回は、そんな我が家のちょっとしたお話をしようと思います。

以前は私も配信サービスを利用していました。けれど、「いつでも見られる」という気楽さのせいか、忙しい日々に追われるうちに、かえって映画とじっくり向き合うことがなくなってしまったのです。結局、配信画面の前にいるのは娘ばかり。いくら注意してもテレビから離れず、外で遊ぶよりも画面を見つめる時間が増えていくばかり。その間に家事がはかどるため、ついそのままにしてしまい、気づけば娘が今どんなことに興味を持っているのかさえ、掴みづらくなる始末。

「これは少し考え直さなければ」と思っていた矢先、今度は家族間でテレビの主権争いが勃発。「私がこれを見ていたのに！」「私が見たいのに！」と、お互いに主張がぶつかり合うように。それを機に、私は配信サービスの契約を更新しないことを決意。

翌週末、私たちは何年ぶりかにレンタルビデオ店を訪れました。どこか2000年代初頭の面影を残す店内は、かつてに比べてDVDの棚も減り、規模が縮小しているのが一目で分かりました。それでも、ずらりと並ぶジャケットを実際に手に取り、あらすじを読み込んでいく時間は、懐かしさと新鮮さが入り混じる、とても有意義な体験でした。スマートフォンやパソコンを手にしていると、私たちはつい「何でも知っている」　「いつでも、どこでも必要な情報に触れられる」と錯覚してしまいがちです。

けれど、その小さなお店で、無数に並ぶ役者たちの顔や、監督たちの名前を眺めているうちに、ふと思ったのです。「一生をかけても、ここに並ぶすべての作品を観ることはできないだろう」と。それはまるで、ソクラテスが説いた「無知の知」を突きつけられるような体験でした整然と並ぶDVDの塊（マッス）は、「残された人生で、あなたがあと何本の作品に出会えますか？」と、静かに私に問いかけているようでもありました。

その日は娘も一緒でした。二人で観るもの、彼女が一人で観るもの、そして私が一人で楽しむもの。じっくりと時間をかけ、1週間で5〜6本の作品を選びました。棚を巡りながら、娘は最近学校で流行っているアニメや映画のことを熱心に教えてくれ、私はそれを嬉しく聴いていました。また、ふと目にとまったジャケットに惹かれて作品を選ぶという「偶然の出会い」も、私たちを大いに愉しませ、会話の種を撒いてくれます。これこそ、アルゴリズムで管理された配信サービスにはない、一番の醍醐味かもしれません。

返却期限は2週間。この「限られた時間」があるからこそ、不思議なことに、以前よりもずっと真剣に、深く作品と向き合える自分がいました。久しぶりに選んだのは、クリストファー・ノーラン監督の『メメント』。20代の学生時代にはよく理解できなかった伏線やストーリーが、人生経験を重ねた今の私には、驚くほど新鮮に響きました。「写真とは何か」を問いかけるその描写が、切ないほど胸に迫ったのです。

今では、週末にレンタルビデオ店へ行き、その帰り道にある喫茶店で抹茶パフェを食べるのが、私たち親子のささやかなお楽しみになっています。

The Rich Detours of "nevertheless"

"Netflix and Amazon Prime are far cheaper, and you don’t have to worry about late fees if you forget to return them." Most people would likely agree. Yet, I still choose to visit the local video rental shop for DVDs. That space taught me an important lesson: within our limitations, we discover how to live more fully. I would like to share a brief story from our household.

I also relied on streaming services. However, the constant availability made it easy to disengage from cinema and daily life. My daughter became absorbed by the screen, spending far more time watching television than playing outside. Although this gave me time for housework, I soon realized I no longer understood what truly interested her.

As I considered a change, a dispute over the television arose in our family. Competing demands replaced laughter in our living room. This prompted me not to renew our streaming subscription.

The following weekend, we visited a video rental shop for the first time in years. The shop, though smaller than before, retained its early 2000s atmosphere. Browsing the aisles and reading DVD synopses was both nostalgic and refreshing. In contrast, smartphones and laptops can create the illusion of unlimited knowledge and access.

Standing in the shop, I realized I could never watch every film available, no matter how long I lived. This was a clear reminder of the Socratic paradox: recognizing one's own ignorance. The rows of DVDs seemed to ask how many more films I would truly experience in my lifetime.

My daughter joined me that day, and together we selected films for the week—some to watch together, some individually. As we browsed, she shared which animations and films were popular at her school, and I listened with interest. Discovering films based on their cover art sparked enjoyable conversations, a joy that streaming algorithms cannot replicate.

We had two weeks before the DVDs were due back. This deadline encouraged me to engage with the films more deeply. I chose Christopher Nolan’s Memento, which I had not seen in twenty years. Its complex plot resonated with new meaning, and its exploration of photography was especially impactful.

Now, our weekends include a visit to the video rental shop, followed by a stop at a tea room for a matcha parfait.
