Concept for the Video: The Power of Spoken Word

A few screenshots from my editing and testing of the videos. I felt that using the type of the posters would be harder to intergrade with my current moving image idea of it moving with speech. as I would using more spoken words than I presented, I thought it would be a good idea to manipulate the title. I create “the yellow wallpaper” title and projected in on the screen, which was then manipulated whilst I read chosen passages. The idea is for video to first appear as static, but moves when the narrator talks about the creeping of the woman behind the wallpaper. The video will also show the deterioration of the mental condition and how the narrator saw the figure (shaky).

After much consideration, I thought that my project needed more context instead of creating these typographic light experiments just for visual pleasure. My idea was to use the images and videos I create as a promotional tool for the novel at a current arts festival called “Hay Festival” (26th May - 5th June 2016). The idea was to promote the yellow wallpaper as featured spoke performance at the festival, whereby I would create promotional posters of the stills showing a development in her deterioration, as well as video echoing a voice-over showing how the moving image could work. The video would also give viewers the incite into the feel and emotive of the performance, giving audience the opportunity to understand what the performance will be like. 

The video and posters will show the viewer an understanding of her mental state and visual represent the narrators script (seeing things shaky by the woman behind the paper).

A zoetrope is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion. The name Zoetrope was composed from the Greek root words ζωή zoe, "life" and τρόπος tropos, "turning".

The zoetrope consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides. On the inner surface of the cylinder is a band with images from a set of sequenced pictures. As the cylinder spins, the user looks through the slits at the pictures across. The scanning of the slits keeps the pictures from simply blurring together, and the user sees a rapid succession of images, producing the illusion of motion. From the late 19th century, devices working on similar principles have been developed, named analogously as linear zoetropes and 3D zoetropes, with traditional zoetropes referred to as "cylindrical zoetropes" if distinction is needed.

I was told my Sally that I needed to develop my ideas for that it has further connection with the narrative and consider ways in which I can promote a sense of time. An idea was to create a visually digital piece that uses the Moholy-Nagy light experiment - My idea is to create a video of the distress of the narrators emotions and visual state. I will use this video to create interesting flip books showing the development of her stage through a series of books that the viewer MANUALLY scrolls through.

Screen-printing Testing.

Today I have been looking at ways to show the overlay of text; I looked at doing screen printing at a raw technique. I looked at different weights of type to see what size would be perfect for printing. The idea was to overlay this yellow text to act as the wallpaper of the narrative.

Jonathan Barnbrook (born 1966), is a British graphic designer, film maker and typographer. He trained at Saint Martin's School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, both in London.

Barnbrook designed the cover artwork of David Bowie's 2002 album Heathen, where he used his 'Priori' typeface for the first type. Barnbrook went on to design the sleeves for all of Bowie's studio albums up until his death with Blackstar, each with their own specially-designed typography.He cites record cover artwork as an early design influence, and possibly the interest that drew him to graphic design, with other covers including ones for John Foxx, Tuxedomoon and Cult With No Name.

Barnbrook is also a font designer and has released fonts including Bastard, Exocet, False Idol, Infidel, Moron, Newspeak, Olympukes, Sarcastic, Shock & Awe.[8] Many have emotive and controversial titles reflecting the style and themes of Barnbrook's work. His font Mason, originally released as Manson, is available from Emigre.

From 1997–2003 Barnbrook collaborated with Young British Artist Damien Hirst, mainly on the design, layout and typography of his book I Want To Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now and on artwork associated with his restaurant Pharmacy.

The poster is meant to represent the notion of the narrative by typographically visualising the idea of someone/something (the narrator) trapped behind the yellow wallpaper and the idea that her freedom of speech is enclosed by the four walls of the room.
