Naomi Carter is probably the lesser known of the two Carters that walk the halls of Tree Hill High, something which tends to be the by-product of going to the same high school where your brother is the captain of the basketball team and generally just one of the nicest and most popular guys around. Sure, Naomi would be the first to admit that sometimes it’s annoying to have an older sibling that’s just about near perfect, but it would be worse if she weren’t such a great girl herself. As much as people never seemed to dislike Noah, nobody really seemed to have a problem with Naomi either. The girl was just about as kind as they came, usually with a large smile on her face, especially when she was playing basketball, swimming, painting, or, her favorite, hanging out with her best friend, Lydia Scott. The two met in daycare when Naomi was 3 and Lydia was 4. Naomi walked over to the brunette girl and saw her coloring a picture and said the picture was beautiful. Lydia had pulled out the chair next to her and offered to share some of her Oreos and that was what began their “legendary” friendship.

Since that day, the two girls have rarely spent too long apart. Their parents have long since gotten used to having the other girl at their houses. It is not altogether uncommon for either set of parents to wake and find a child that is not their own sitting at their table. And though Naomi’s mother is a bit of a fanatical believer in her faith and insists that both the Carter children come to church on Sunday, even she adored her daughter’s best friend. Lydia Scott was a gifted girl, polite and attentive; Mrs. Carter couldn’t have thought or dreamed up a better influence on her young Naomi, especially as Naomi got older and closer to the ages where kids tend to start breaking free of their parents’ control. Naomi didn’t rebel as some who come from strict childhoods do. Instead, she pushed herself in her athletics and her schoolwork even more. And in her free time, she spent the customary most of her time with Lydia, or at least cheering Lydia on from any event where she wasn’t playing as her teammate.

She couldn’t pinpoint when it happened, the exact moment she knew that she was in love with Lydia Scott, but she remembered the first time she couldn’t hold it in anymore. They had been hanging out the way they usually did, just goofing off and dancing around to music in Lydia’s room. Naomi had been having the feelings stirring in her chest for some time by that point and they had been weighing on her mind. Lydia was her best friend; she knew that she wasn’t going to last long not telling her what was going on. They had finally collapsed, laughing, onto Lydia’s bed and Naomi rolled over to look at the girl who absolutely captivated her and said “I love you Lydia.” It had slipped out, the words they had said a thousand times before, but this time they were heavier, fraught with a meaning neither of them quite understood at the time. Lydia had replied that of course she loved Naomi back and when Naomi insisted that no, she really loved Lydia, Lydia had kissed Naomi. The kiss was soft, sweet, and only lasted a moment, but it had been everything Naomi had ever dreamed it could be and the two have been together ever since, and that was a year ago. A year later and Naomi has never been more in love though sometimes she worries that Lydia will get too busy for her or that her mom will find out. Still, she knows that the love is worth the risk. Lydia is worth everything.

Lydia Scott: Lydia Scott has always been Naomi’s best friend. The two met and pretty much became instantly inseparable. Still, no one could guess that it would one day become more. Now, the two are dating, and though she is pie-in-the-sky in love with her girlfriend, Naomi knows that it’s better if her mom thinks they’re just friends. Plus, something has been up with Lydia lately and Naomi doesn’t know if she should be worried or not.
