DISCLAIMER: This is all my opinion and nobody has to agree🫶 I’m using they/them for Jax bc some said they’re transfem and some said it’s a theory not canonical. I watched the show as well as the movie; I still don’t know👁️👄👁️/ This is going to be incoherent so sorry in advance😭
Jax was not redeemed just because they abstracted:
Jax never made amends with Gangle, Ragatha, Zooble, Kinger (I’ll come back for Pomni), and I’m not entirely sure Jax made amends with themselves. Yes, they helped distract Caine and that was to the benefit of (Pomni, Ragatha, Gangle, Kinger, Zooble, and Jax). But wait! Jax threw that away when they pushed the red button. So in that moment when the gang didn’t know it was an adventure they believed Jax screwed them over. Now we do know Leroy (Jax) was homeless in the real world. So that most likely contributed to the panic attack and red-blue button-gate. Jax then goes into full isolation, their last defense mechanism.
Why does Jax have bullying and isolation as defense mechanisms?
They fear that everyone around them is ridiculing them/ demeans them behind their back.
Jax probably forced themself to believe everyone was like their mom. Wanting to hurt them and then hug them(be friends with them), so when Jax realizes they vented to Ribbit they got scared. “What if Ribbit’s uses my past against me??” So they push Ribbit away, Jax never wanted anyone to get to them. Making Ragatha promise not to talk about Ribbit and Kaufmo seemed to be a mix of grief & oh great another thing to be held over my head.
After pushing Ribbit and Kaufmo away Jax the jerk is officially in season. They name Gangle as an insult then punish Gangle for existing. My, my, don’t we feel bad when Jax locks away their feelings at an attempt to protect themself, how relatable…STILL DOESN’T EXECUSE THEIR DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR.
I think the naming of Gangle actually solidified Jax going from jerk to bully.
They were stuck between mourning, hating others, and hating themself yet abusive. I was teary eyed when Jax didn’t “want to go” but goodness if this isn’t a moral of the story:
“Hurt people, hurt people.”
No matter how bad Jax’s relationship with their mother was, no matter how afraid they were that Ribbit was going to hold their past over their head, no matter how much they loathed themself Jax never had the right to abuse the people around them.
After Jax hit the red button they were ‘too far gone’ for lack of a better word. In Jax’s last scene there wasn’t a “sorry for: pushing you out the truck/ saying I wouldn’t care if you abstracted etc” (Not saying there should have been either.) Just saying: Jax didn’t atone for their bullying. Although, Pomni and Jax reconciled at the very end. Not because Jax redeemed themself but because at the very end of it all, Jax was human. The true Jax is human.
There’s something simple yet dark about Pomni being right. “Have you ever thought that this might be what causes people to abstract in the first place?”
If Zooble wasn’t there for Gangle, would she have abstracted?
If Jax trusted Ribbit as much as she trusted them would she still be around?
If they listened to Kaufmo more would he be around?
If Ragatha didn’t appear in time would Kinger have lasted?
