“You look at the world with poetry behind your eyes and wonder if everyone else is blind. There is too much color here and not enough who like to look. You want to grab humanity by the shoulders, jolt it awake with tremors that could shatter state lines, but the tacked up notes eclipsing your bedroom wall speak for you more than your metaphors can. They were your eyes on days you starved for beauty and devoured the world with your irises, documenting your intakes on the closest pieces of paper you could find. Restaurant napkins. ATM receipts. A used Kleenex. Post-It notes. Torn up bus tickets. A ten-dollar bill. Verbal polaroids of tangerine sunsets witnessed through coffee shop windows. Mini odes to ice-cold drinks sweating beads of condensation during the hottest day of summer and lit cigarettes breathing bright orange tips like elongated lightning bugs. Everyone is living in the fast lane these days and if you don’t take time to stop and smell the roses, then who will? There is too much beauty here demanding to be noticed, craving the attention of humans too preoccupied with tapping away on keyboards that know no music. We’ve forgotten the colors Nature bleeds and one of these days, she’ll be gone before we can fall on our knees and beg her to stay, before we can sing false promises to be better lovers, with only her scent left lingering like a ghost in the threshold. Humans too often take things for granted, including this, the only Earth we will ever have. The Earth that will one day be lost in oblivion along with the soil fertilized by our own withering bodies. But I suppose all I’m saying is while it is here, we’re here, with eyes that see and skins that touch and hearts that beat and minds that know and lungs that breathe – poet or not – learn how to make the whole world your muse.”
