Intermediate / Lesson 27: -대로
안녕하세요! Hi everyone! I have a very useful topic for y’all today – it’s all about -대로! Let’s start!
Let’s look at an example of using -대로 with a noun:
제 말대로 하세요. = Please do as I say.
제 말대로 can be translated as “as I say,” or more literally, “as my words.” You can think of -대로 as turning a noun into an adverb in a way – this sentence instructs you on the way to do something, and that “way” is 제 말대로 – as I say – if that makes sense. Let’s see some more!
맘대로 해. = Do what you want.
This is a common one! We know that 맘 means “heart,” so this could mean “do as your heart desires.”
Depending on the context, this could mean “on whose watch?” or “who allowed that to happen?” – stuff like that.
예상대로 BTS가 대상을 받았어요. = As expected, BTS won the grand prize.
You can also use -대로 with verbs! Here’s a formula:
Present tense: [verb stem] + 는 대로
Past tense: [verb stem] + ㄴ/은 대로
김밥을 적혀 있는 대로 만드세요. = Make the kimbap as the recipe says.
A more literal translation would be “make the kimbap as it is written down.” 적혀 있다 means “to be in the state of written down,” so this is asking you to follow the instructions as they are written.
생각 나는 대로 써 보세요. = Write whatever comes to mind.
More literally “write as thoughts come up.”
남자친구가 약속한 대로 3시에 저를 만났어요. = My boyfriend met me at 3 o’clock as promised.
Here, your boyfriend promised that he would meet you at 3. And, 약속한 대로, as promised, he met you.
비가 많이 와서 파티가 준비한 대로 안됐어요. = The party didn’t go as I planned because it started raining really hard.
You can even use -ㄴ 대로 with adjectives, mainly with 싶다. For example:
살고 싶은 대로 살아. = Live as you want. / Live the way you want to live.
이대로 and 그대로 are useful terms! 이대로 means “just like this” and 그대로 means “just like that.” They’re similar to 이렇게 and 그렇게. You’ll also see them translated as “as it is” or “the way it is.” Here are some sentences!
에쎄이를 이대로 두지 말고 교정봐요. = Don’t leave the essay the way it is – proofread it.
이대로 좋으니까 속눈썹 부틸 필요 없는 것 같아요. = I don’t think you need to put on falsies. I like it the way it is.
(from lessonsinkorean) 이 문장을 문자 그대로 영역하세요. = Please translate this sentence into English word for word.
미화하지 말고 있는 그대로 말해 줘. = Don’t sugarcoat is, just tell me like it is.
있는 그대로 is a useful phrase! It means “like it is.”
That’s about it for this lesson! Hope it was helpful!! See you in the next one! 다음 또 봐요!
