Gwyn felt Azriel's presence before he landed in the training area. It was almost night and she had retreated there hoping to be alone. The priestess didn’t think he would show up so quickly. She didn’t care, either. Without wanting to take any longer, she looked at him.

“Yes?”, she said.

He appeared to be miserable. “Gwyn… I-”, he stopped, gulping. It was kind of funny to see the famous and feared Shadowsinger like that.

“What?” - when he didn’t answer, she got even more upset. “It seems like you’re having trouble saying it. So let me help you. The necklace?”

Azriel looked deeply hurt. “The moment I knew, I came here to find you”, he whispered as he stepped forward.

“I see. You’re gonna say you are sorry?” - Gwyn smiled.

“Of course I am. I never meant to hurt you or anyone else. I was stupid, that’s all. I haven’t given this gift much thought, at least not..”, he inhaled. I’m sorry, Gwyneth. I really am”

She stirred. “I know you are. I know. But… it doesn’t matter to me anymore. Because, Azriel, I’m tired”

He tried to reach her, but she didn’t allow it. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that all this time, I’ve never told you anything. It wouldn’t be good for us, so I thought: well, if he gets to know me and I get to know him, then maybe… maybe we could..”, her voice cracked and she paused. “It didn’t happen. You didn’t choose me”

“Gwyn.. are you saying.. that you.. like me?”

She blinked. “Actually, I’m saying that I’m in love with you. As I’m also saying that you’re my mate”

They stared at each other. Pure silence surrounded them - Azriel was shoked and confused, his brows furrowed and his mouth set in a tight line. At that moment, he didn’t look like an Angel of Death. Only a male. A hurt one. She saw when he realized that it was true.

“You.. you are my mate?”, he asked. “How long have you known about that?”

Gwyn sighed. “Yes, I am. And I’ve known that for a time now”

“Why didn’t you tell me? You know how this is important to me”, he clenched his fists.

“Exactly. I didn’t want to force you into something you had no interest in just because we were mates. So I kept trying to reach you. To spend my time with you, to send you hints, to.. I don’t know! To have you realizing that I was the one. But that was silly of me. I was wrong, Azriel. And among all our conversations, nothing”, she hissed. “Nothing you have ever said to me showed that you were with another female. So I waited for you. I hoped that something was holding you back - something you would notice, too”

Azriel stood where he was, looking at her. “You should have told me”

“I shouldn’t. You know why? Because she was the one who told me about you two-”

“It’s not like that”, he tried to say, but she didn’t listen.

“She was the one who saw that necklace I was wearing and demanded it. She is the one you chose. And that’s okay. I respect your feelings and your decisions. I wish you happiness. The most important thing is that I know now. And that I’ve finally given up on you”

She was crying. When she sobbed, he again attempted to approach her, but she pulled away.

“Gwyneth, please!”

She shook her head, wiping away her tears. “So, yes, Az, you’re sorry. But so am I. Because even though I forgive you for the necklace and I understand that this - me -, wasn’t your fault, I’m still hurt. I’m still humiliated. And I won’t disrespect my own feelings, not even for you”

I don’t remember exactly where I got this idea but I’m pretty sure somebody wrote a headcanon about this a while ago so if that was you please let me know! Anyway here you go and I’m sorry. ily <3

Gwyn’s head whipped around at the loud crash that sounded at the other end of the training ring. It was three in the morning, far too late for anybody else to be up here. Except maybe one male who shared her lack of ability for sleep.

She dropped the bow in her hands and made her way over to the brooding male now looking at her. “Shadowsinger. Rough landing?” A smirk adorned her full lips. She noticed his shadows appeared darker than usual, wrapped around their master as if offering comfort. One curious shadow strayed from its companions and made its way over to Gwyn, hovering in front of her.

With a grunt Azriel snapped his wings tightly to his back and strode towards the door. “I was not aware anybody was up here. I apologize. I’ll leave you to it, Berdara.” Gwyn tilted her head and stared after him.

Azriel: What’s this?

Gwyn: Affection.

Azriel: Disgusting.

I raised my eyebrows.

“Kind of thrilled at the idea that you’re one step from death?” She squeezed my shoulders. “One step…” she said. “And everything changes?”

“Yeah,” I said quietly. “It symbolizes a need to engage in self-destructive behavior. It’s not that uncommon.”

While driving, we think, even for just a moment, about jerking the steering wheel into oncoming traffic or leaping off the balcony of a ship and into the abyss of the black water below. They’re passing thoughts and little dares we allow our psyche, because we’re tired of not living and we want the fear. We want to remember why we want to live.

And some of us were more tempted than others at the thrill of how, in the moment, everything could change. Of how it’s not about who we are but what we are, and animals don’t apologize for whatever they need to do to survive.

“There’s a French phrase for it,” she said. “L’appel du vide.”

I looked up at her, her pink lips misty with hot water.

“That’s what binds us,” she told me.

“Who?”

“Our family.”

Our family?

“Kai, Banks, Michael, Rika, Will, Alex…” she went on. “You and me. We all hear it. L’appel du vide. The call of the void.”

I stopped, gazing at her.

“The call of the void,” I murmured.

Was she right? Was that what bound us together? Like recognizes like, after all, and we lived in that need to go a step further and feel everything we were capable of. The fear was terrifying, but coming out the other side redefined our reality.
