âColin jokes about his background, says it was like the Von Trapp family, only his mother was tone deaf. In fact his family are all very close. His big sister introduced him to Magazine, Joy Division and John Cooper Clarke. The brothers also lovingly joke about their mother. âJonathan often teases her about all the drug benders he goes on, and she sits there saying, Oh yes? How nice dear. It was funny, when we first got signed she wouldnât tell our grandfather what we were doing because she thought it would finish him off.â âShe is quite proud of us I suppose,â adds Jonny. âHer favourite song on the first LP was âThinking About Youâ which has the line âIâm playing with myselfâ, she had no idea it was about wanking. I remember one time she was doing the Independent crossword and she called over, âJonathan, four down, a female bird, do you think it could be c***?â I was like, erm, how are you spelling that mother?ââ

âColin and Jonny maintained their cracking sense of humour throughout the interview by taking digs at each other in conversation. Colin in particular by dredging up memories of a young Jonny who, âwould run about the neighborhood with a tennis racket playing air guitarâ to which Jonny could only smile in guilt. In turn, Jonny would make fun of Colinâs frequent use of the phrase âyou knowâ by singing it softly during his responses, âyouknowyouknowyouknowâ, leaving them to ask us for a friendly edit of their sound bites!â

(In an interview)
Jonny: âMy mum has something to be proud of.
Colin: âYes. Our mum. Sheâs my mother as well, Jonathan.

Thom Yorke Role Sings and plays guitar. Whatâs he like âParanoid, thatâs meâ. Actually very friendly if treated with a little respect. Hates clichĂŠs. Has ongoing love/hate relationship with the modern world. Adores gadgets and the Internet, but hates having to rely on machines. Interests Buddhism (causal); the lie of politics, techno music. Typical quote âFor me, that Saturday [Dianaâs funeral] went much deeper than anyone thought. The whole TV show â George Michael strutting around like a peacock in church â meant nothing to me. But I started crying my eyes out when I saw the people who stopped their cars and lined the motorway. It was the first time that people in Britain actually thought, âHang on⌠itâs us; itâs us against the mediaâ⌠Actually that sounds horrible. Itâs more than that, itâs not just the media. Itâs the Royal Family, itâs the newspaper editors. Everyone was out of touch with the public.â Jonny Greenwood Role The guitar-abusing mad professor of Radiohead. Fancied by many; married to one. Whatâs he like Very funny; slightly baffled air never leaves him. Interests Heâs currently listening to the audio book of Stephen Fryâs âMoab Is My Washpotâ: âThereâs something very comforting about going to sleep listening to Stephen Fryâs voice as you fall asleep in your bunk far away from home.â Typical quote âYou know when you say goodbye to everyone in the room, and then you leave only to realise thereâs something you forgot to bring â so you have to go back? Thatâs how I feel all the time.â Also: [to Ed] âWhat? Youâve never seen âFoghorn Leghornâ? Well, principally, it concerns a large henâŚâ Colin Greenwood Role Stands behind the three guitarists nodding sagely as he plays his bass. Whatâs he like Extremely friendly, utterly sociable, rather maternal. Like out of âPathetic Sharksâ Playful too. Once when Thom was absent from a soundcheck, Colin stepped forward and sang, âI want ham rolls⌠with chipsâ to the tune of âLuckyâ. Interests Reading; all kinds of music; looking for the perfect pair of trousers. Typical conversation âSo, you want us to do âKiller Carsâ? Is that your favourite? Aaah! Itâs great when youâve got a favourite!â Phil Selway Role The bandâs pulse. During Radioheadâs nightmare Glasto 97 slot, during which all the monitors and lights blew out, Thom says, âPhil played the show of his life. Thatâs what saved usâ. Whatâs he like Attentive. He used to be a Samaritan. Interests Parascending, apparently. Typical conversation âI canât believe no oneâs offered you a cup of tea. Milk? Sugar?â Ed OâBrien Role Getting so excited at the beginning of âThe Bendsâ that he has to walk over to the other end of the stage and back again in order to stop exploding. Oh, and guitar. Whatâs he like Congenial, eager to put you at ease. Interests Running. Apparently he needs to strengthen his body in the next few years, in order to stop his back going funny. Typical conversation âDo you think weâll end up like one of those old 70s bands, doing cabaret versions of our old hits? I hope not. Itâs a frightening thought.â
Time Out, november 5th 1997
Interviewer:Do you have a special responsibility within the group?
Colin:No, I donât think I do really. Well, Iâve been listening to a lot of my brotherâs jokes â but apart from that, nothing.
