Made a video on whether Dalmatians actually fit family life — the deafness stats and urate stone stuff surprised me even as an owner
things nobody tells you about dalmatians, from someone who lives with one:
🐾 they don't process purines like literally every other dog breed. they make uric acid. like humans do. every single one of them. evolution looked at this ONE breed and said "you get the gout gene, as a treat"
🐾 up to 30% are born with hearing loss in at least one ear. this is why good breeders BAER test every puppy. also blue-eyed dals are MORE likely to be deaf and ones with a lil colored patch on their head are LESS likely. nature is just doing bits at this point
🐾 the shedding. you think "oh short coat, easy." no. the hairs are tiny white needles and they choose violence and also your black sweater
🐾 "does she like to run?" she was bred to trot next to horse-drawn carriages for 20+ miles. an hour of exercise a day is the MINIMUM. she is not tired. she has never been tired. i have been tired since 2023
🐾 they bond so hard to their family it's honestly a little codependent. 10/10 no notes
anyway we made a whole video about whether dals actually work as family dogs (the honest version, hard parts included) — it's linked in our bio/below if you want the full thing 🖤🤍
