Blog Entry: What is a documentary? How does the Internet transform the concepts or properties or traditional form of a documentary? Try to relate this to In Plato's Cave

A documentary is a nonfiction audio/visual piece. It is generally linear, with a narrative arc that has a clear beginning, middle and end. The people producing the documentary have a significant amount of control in presenting the story to the viewer - determining when and how the viewer accesses the story.

The Internet as a medium for documentary media expands the ways in which a story can be told - the narrative arc does not need to happen in a linear fashion. The viewer becomes a participant in the unfolding of the story. The viewer has control in how they experience the story because the viewer has many choices and can be more inclined to experience the piece(s) in relationship to other media that are related.

In relationship to In Plato’s Cave, with documentary forms on the Internet, the viewer is not encouraged to be passive, and just limited to what’s on projected/presented on the screen by the media makers. Instead, the viewer is a more active participant who can more easily question, verify or interact with other media to add texture or nuance to the story they are experiencing.
