He usually is when it comes to you, can hardly focus when you look his way. He can feel your eyes on him where you peer over the top of your monitor, eyes burning into his skin. He hopes the glasses cover up the warmth in his cheeks, the tint of pink there, at least a little. He can't go giving away all his secrets now.Β
The issue is that you seemingly suck all the composure Clark has right out of him. You make him nervous. More than anyone heβs ever met, it's weird. Youβre lovely, of course, but you like to flirt and tease and he's never sure if you're serious. He hopes you are.

Clark finds himself straightening up pretty quickly, leaning further forward with a smile on his face at your call. Heβs easy. Your brows are pulled together with a frown on your lips. It does nothing to mar your sweet face, he thinks, but he prefers the teasing tilt that usually sits on your lips.

Heβs out of his seat and rounding his desk to lean over yours, quickly. He plants a hand on the desk near your mouse and tries his best to fight the rising heat again, clearing his throat as you shift in your seat closer to him.Β
What he finds on your screen is a portfolio of well-shot and edited photographs that are definitely ready for submission, no doubt in his mind.
βTheyβre great!β he assures, pointing at one in particular. An older man cheering in a crowd with a giant smile on his face, he can tell from the other series of photographs that the crowd were looking at Superman, him really, and you chose to focus on the people. It's brilliant. βThis is my favourite.βΒ
βThanks, Clark.β As he turns his head he catches the teasing smile on your lips heβs become well familiar with. He knows heβs fallen into a trap youβve set and he's not in a rush to get out.Β
βIf only I could just take pictures of you,β You sigh. βItβd make my job easier. You're too handsome for a bad picture.β
βStop,β Clark groans half heartedly, looking away from you, focusing on the grain of your desk.Β

Clark shakes his head with a smile, standing himself up straight so heβs not quite so close to you to give him a better chance of fighting off how flustered heβs starting to feel. It's maybe his smartest decision of the day so far.

His words seem to make your expression sober. The smile stays, but it softens around the edges, making you look unexpectedly earnest.

Clark's brain stops working with the slight confirmation that youβre not just teasing him for the fun of it. Heβs standing there, all tall and broad, without a real thought in his head. His mouth opens and closes as he searches for the right words. Or any words.Β

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
