Over the next few days, we worked on compiling all the information gathered during our field trip. We expanded and refined our initial desktop study with first-hand data that wasn’t available online, documenting building typologies, industrial activities, local daily patterns, transportation systems, and the island’s economic aspects, along with other spatial observations from different areas of the island.

Jail Break: After an exhausting day of exploring the island, @arushyzahir 🦒and I decided to head to the surfing point, Jail Break, to relax a little. Located right behind the prison, the place had an amazing view and such a calm, cozy atmosphere that we nearly fell asleep there. Pictured here is the current condition of the area and of course, a very serious moment of Arushy attempting to surf on land before even touching the water.🏄🏼‍♀️

Gathering Areas:

These were some of the gathering spots we noticed throughout the island, where people would casually meet, socialize, and spend time together during the day. @arushyzahir @naaahiilx @raayurr @ayya9800-blog @haialea1722

Reclaimed Area: We explored the reclaimed area in the intense heat. There was very little shade as there were no trees, and the space felt exposed and harsh. We also noticed approximately three houses under construction, indicating early stages of development in the area.

Island Exploration – Day 01: Upon our arrival, Arushy and I went for a short tour around the island to get an overall overview of the place. It was our first time experiencing the island up close, so we took our time walking through different parts to understand its layout, atmosphere, and everyday life.

Our stay:

During our stay in Himmafushi, we stayed at Moodhu Guest House, located less than a 3-minute walk from the harbor. The stay was spacious and comfortable, and the first thing we noticed was the artwork representing the guesthouse’s logo and identity. The interior had a calm boho vibe that made the space feel warm and welcoming. We also had comfortable spaces to work, and often spent time working on the terrace. Desktop study:

The information presented in the desktop study was gathered through multiple sources to ensure a well-rounded understanding of the island. We collected data by directly contacting relevant individuals and institutions, which helped us gain accurate and up-to-date insights.

In addition, we used online sources such as Google to access general information, maps, and background data. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports were also an important source, providing detailed information on environmental conditions, infrastructure, and development aspects of the island.

We further cross-checked information from different sources to maintain reliability and consistency. This process allowed us to understand various layers of the island, including its social, environmental, and economic context. Overall, the desktop study helped us build a strong foundation before proceeding to on-site analysis.
