Finish is invisible until water droplets are placed on the fabric and they start to ball up.  Water Resistant: water will slide off until a certain point. With time and pressure water can penetrate the fabric. 

Sizing or Starching adds a lot of stiffness to the fabric.

Name change of fabric to “Crinoline”

Fabric used for support and structure, very very stiff. Sizing can be washed away though.

Fabric is embroidered, but there are places where a 360 design is embroidered in and the middle part of the circle is cut out.

Using threads to embroidery/sew a pattern onto a fabric. Fabric is same on the front and back. 

Threads are stitched on top of fabric. Machines can do this!

An acid or sand wash diminishes the brightness of a fabric. Think “acid-washed jeans” which actually use no acid in this process. The fabric has a faded and soft appearance and feel on the front and back. 

Used to give garments a worn out appearance. 

Adhesive is printing down in a pattern on a fabric and little fibers are thrown on/added. 

Cheap and easy way to get a fabric that appears to be a pile weave or have an extra yarn.

Napping is when fibers are brushed up and the fabric feels fuzzy! 

Staple fiber fabrics only!

Napping helps hide wrinkles, aids in thermal retention, and makes fabric a little weaker.

Napping is seen in sweatshirt fleece, fleece, flannels, and various other fabrics.

Cire fabric has a wet and shiny look to it. The fabric is made out of thermoplastic fibers that go through rollers in which the surface is melted just a little bit to create a shiny wet look. 

Only on the front side.

Fabric goes through calendaring and a glaze is added to the top of it that “coats” the fabric and adds some shine. 

If a fabric is printed it is called a “Chintz” If it’s a solid color it is called a “Polished Cotton” 

This fabric has 2 different fiber contents. Chemicals are added to the fabric and eat away at one of the fiber contents. This weakens the fabric, and disrupts the weaving arrangement. 

A plisse finish is added to the fabric to mimic “seersucker”. The fabric has some puckering and a ripple to it. Treated with chemicals.

This is a more permanent finish than embossing. 

Calendaring is used! The fabric is sent through several heat and raised rollers. The fabric is heat set and embossed to have a specific texture, either squares, a crinkly look, a fake finish, or other texture. 

Looks like wood grain or a watermark.

Heated roller push down on parts of the fabric.

ONLY on ribbed weave fabrics.

A fabric is piece dyed and then a bleach paste is put onto the fabric which bleaches the fabric. 

Bleach weakens the fibers in the fabrics and can lead to a weaker fabric.

Polka dots are common products of this method of printing. 

Space dyed yarn is usually rainbow in color, or it fades between several colors between a strand.  

Yarns are knitted into a fabric, printed, unraveled, then woven into something else. 

Prints BIG PATTERNS that don’t necessarily repeat and that use a lot of different colors. Also can be used for intricate designs. 

A transfer print is one that was printed on paper and is then transferred onto a fabric. The fabric HAS to be a thermoplastic.
