I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine ✨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!

I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!

Because so many other times something goes unacknowledged or isn’t dwelled on for longer than a minute, even since the days of Undertale, there's a pretty good chance it has something to do with birds.

Here’s what I mean.

All of the amalgamates with known family are accounted for in Undertale’s epilogue and Deltarune’s graveyard… except Reaper Bird. Yet Everyman still seems to repeatedly show up on occasion.

In Undertale’s throne room, birds are singing and flowers are blooming. Flowers and floral imagery are incredibly important to Undertale, as seen by the Echo Flowers, the Golden Flowers and Flowey, along with the imagery of roses and their thorns… but the birds are just nice ambience from the surface I guess.

The ambience that plays in between the empty Castle Town and Card Kingdom, as well as right outside the Castle of the Chaos King is called Weird Birds. It also happens to be an Earthbound-esque synth described as “sine-wave birds” in the 6th anniversary livestream, but along with Gallery it remains unaddressed as of late. Again, is this just some chill ambience or what?

The Starwalker Bird right outside the first Egg Room, with a face and wings oddly resembling those of the ch4 titan. Unlike the original Starwalker, this one hasn’t made a reappearance, and I’m pretty sure half the player base only remembers it from Starwalker’s infamous line.

The rusty birdcage Kris uses to contain the Soul. Susie comments that she didn’t know they owned a bird or something, but still no explanation for where that came from or how they got it.

Spamton and the Addisons, Swatch and the Swatchlings, and even the Poppup encounters used for some additional characterization from Cyber City are oddly birdlike in design (the latter are described as “preening”, which Berdly also does according to battle flavour text). Also, the pipis clam caviar egg thingys. Honestly I’m not sure those are even going to be explained.

The normal npc from the librarby. The only Goner in Undertale lacking a non-monochrome counterpart until the release of Deltarune and it just so happens to be the one whose design more clearly resembles a bird when coloured in? Okay?

The allegedly useless bird from Jevil’s fight. Is that just meant to be an RNG gag or what because that sprite wasn’t just recycled from the bird in waterfall I checked. That’s the second time in ch1 a regular ass bird is played as a gag if we count the duck thrash machine.

The egg rooms. Obviously birds aren’t the only egg laying animal as seen by lizards, fish, monotremes, dinosaurs, etc. so that could mean anything. Were it not for Berdly’s desk being used to collect them. Is that also just a joke Because Birb?

The Guei encounters and the fire extinguisher rooster guy from the Dark Sanctuaries. The former are the closest thing we have to Reaper Bird considering they reference the deceased counterparts to the other amalgamates, and the latter ends up being what we need to get into the third sanctuary despite being played off as a loudmouthed rando with an overinflated ego. The most important of them all… and it’s just a plain old fire extinguisher. Y’know, the thing you need in case of emergency and the removal of which is actually a very bad idea because if a real fire starts we’re screwed?

The only physical description we have of Deltarune’s Angel thus far is that it apparently has feathered wings judging from Noelle’s nativity play costume she still keeps around. Surely that’s just because angels are known for being depicted with feathery wings, it has nothing to do with the feathery wings of birds I’m sure that’s not related at all.

If you look at these in isolation, it doesn’t look like anything’s off. Maybe Toby just thought the sign wave bgm sounded like weird bird calls and named the track that because it was funny. Maybe Spamton wasn’t meant to look birdlike at all and fans just like drawing the Addisons with avian features because they look cute. Maybe the feathered wings of the angel have nothing to do with birds at all.

But the more they pile up, the harder it gets to ignore them all or chalk it up to coincidence. At least that’s what happened when I started to notice them.

It's like the game has metaphorically created a negative space where the bird is not, which only intrigues me more considering the fact that we know there’s still things being kept from us and the story’s just passed the halfway point.

A rusty cage, an egg, a pair of feathered wings… and something you can’t quite remember.

Looks like SOMEBODIES happy to not be under an apathetic creatures reign and constantly relive your trauma because of it
