Hoodoo Herbs, by Angelie Belard:ย
โRoot Capabilitiesย
In this section, I will focus on just 10 of the more common herbs that we deal with. These herbs will be featured in many of spells throughout the book and I will also share quick tips on how you can use them even without an active spell or potion. Remember, if you want to get the most out of them, buy them from someone who grows them for magical purposes or else grow themย yourself.ย
Alfafa: This is a plant commonly used to attract money. As a practitioner, if you have a few of these in your home, it will help to ensure that money is always in your house. You can also sprinkle a bit of it in your wallet or pocket to attract money into it.ย
Angelica root: This particular root will keep dark and negative forces at bay. If you are a woman, you can use this to amplify your femininity and can also utilize it to create protection spells for your children. I also have a few beginner spellsthat use the power in Angelica root to attract luck.ย
Black Mustard Seed: We also call this โthe seed of strife,โ because its primary purpose is to create confusion in the mind of your enemies. If you have a dispute with someone who is constantly troubling you, sprinkling some black mustard seeds on the path where they are known to walk can stir up confusion that will destabilize them and throw them off your path.ย
Chamomile: In general herbal medicine, chamomile is believed to have a calming effect and is good for people who have sleeping problems.ย problems. In Hoodoo magic, you can use this to neutralize spells that you think have been cast against you.
Dandelion root: If you ever have a spell where you need to draw on help from your ancestors, using a dandelion root can amplify your reach and connection, making it easier to access them. If you are having trouble sleeping and feel that you are the victim of spiritual attacks, using dandelion in some of the potions that I will share in this book can help provide additional protection and will help you sleep better.
Fennel: Ensure your home is a safe space, free of bad spirits and negative energy that might corrupt the magical atmosphere, by hanging fennel seeds on your windows. If you need a little dose of courage for something, putting fennel seeds in your pocket can help. When I first started casting spells myself, I used to have fennel seeds in my pocket or in my palm to give me extra confidence. I encourage you to do the same.ย
Ginger: Until you become an advanced Hoodoo practitioner, I advise you to chew a little bit of ginger before you cast a spell. It is one of those herbs with an โamplifyingโ ability. Another effectiveย effective use of ginger root is in spells that are used to increase desire in a relationship. But in a general sense, it is used to attract success.ย
Hibiscus: Warding off dangerous spirits is very important in the practice of Hoodoo magic, but at the same time you need to connect with the right spirits. Using the hibiscus plants in specific spells can attract good spirits that will, in turn, be happy to help you achieve your goal. You also use this in spells that are related to love, marriages and relationshipย
Lemongrass: If you feel that you are suffering from a curse or that you have been jinxed, some of the cleansing spells and baths that I will talk about in this book use lemongrass to wash away the negative effects of those curses or completely neutralize the jinx.
ย Mandrake root: This is a multipurpose plant that can be used for different spells and rituals. It can be bound to a doll and used for a love spell. It can be inserted into a mojo bag to either attract money or repel evil forces and is also commonly used in fertility potionsโ

Book of Shadows: Witch's Salts
Pretty much everyone has heard of 'Witch's Salt' or 'Blessed Salts', some by other names. These terms typically reference Black Salt specifically (no, not the edible kind), but there are many uses for salt in magick aside from just Black Salt and regular Salt and they are a simple tool to make that can be crafted from ingredients you may already have in your possession, inexpensively, and integrated into practically any spell, ritual, blessing, or other spiritual practice.
I'm going to go over different variations of these salts I have personally created and discuss how you may make and use your own in your own magick.
Black Salt is the most popularly used and integrated Salt in witchcraft that I have personally seen included in many spell kits, altar kits, baby witch kits etc. Sold by other sellers on Etsy as the only salt included. Black Salt is incredibly useful and is beneficial to have premade and on hand. Black Salt can dispel negativity, create a circle of purity and protection, can be used to cleanse and consecrate a space, person, or object, among many other uses.
When it comes to creating Black Salt and any Witch's Salt the base is traditionally Sea Salt, the more pure the better. If you live near the ocean like I do and can integrate Sea Salt that is naturally obtains near you than of course I would recommend doing that over purchasing it in a store, but there is nothing wrong with using store bought Sea Salt! You may also use regular, fine salt, or coarse salt if you do not have Sea Salt on hand and don't want to dump money into it (though it is cheap and may be bought at discount stores.)
Edible Black Salt is usually made from combining activated charcoal with Sea Salt, and I do use activated charcoal in my own recipe for Black Salt, there is no 'standard' for ingredients for Witch's Salt. Anything that calls to you that you believe should be integrated into your salt for its specific purpose you may include. Typically, following the theme of cleansing, protection, banishing etc.,one would select other ingredients that have these properties and exhibit the desired color. Don't worry about the consistent black coloration- this can be achieved using a myriad of methods and materials after you have chosen what you would like to integrate.
My 'Black Salt':
โขCoarse Sea Salt (locally sourced)
โขActivated Charcoal (This is what I use in conjunction with the ingredients below to give my salt a consistent black color)
โขPalo Santo Ash (Ash from burning sacred Palo Santo Sticks which are an item also used for consecration and cleansing. Acquire sustainably or not at all, Palo Santo is a sacred tree to many indigenous people and poachers are known to harvest it )
โขSage Smudge Ash (Same concept as with the Palo Santo, I grow my own Sage. There are many herbs and botanicals with cleansing and purifying properties that may be used in place of Sage and Palo Santo that may be integrated at your discretion. Use whatever you like!)
โขObsidian Crystal Chips (Cleansed and charged under a full moon, Obsidian carries protective properties and the crystal itself absorbs negativity)
All or some of these ingredients are combined in a ritual using a mortar and pestle to grind them down where I usually say my blessing and allow the salt to absorb the moon's rays until sunup if possible. I believe the blessing / charging portion of creating your 'Witch's Salts' or Sacred Salt is quite personal. It can be something as simple as the visualization of your energy transferring to and empowering the salt- whatever you believe and feel you must do, do it. As I always say, there is no right or wrong when it comes to magick and spirituality.
The same method of creation may be used to create salts for other purposes as well.
Don't worry so much about matching your ingredients to the color you desire your salt to be. I am more concerned with the magickal & metaphysical properties of the components than the resulting color when blended as I usually choose to use non toxic mica pigments to color the salt if the blending process doesn't yield the vibrancy I desire, except with the Black Salt.
Color has its own energy as well, regardless of where the color comes from. If you would prefer the color to come from organic or natural sources, there are some components you can try mashing together to achieve your desired color
Red- Annatto Seed, Cranberry Juice
Black- Ash, Charcoal
Blue- Blue Thistle, Blueberry Juice
Green- Lime Zest, Chlorophyll
Purple- Plum Juice, Wine
Pink - Peony Petals (Fresh, ground)
Literally anything you can think of may be used to color and add to your salt. The process of blending these ingredients is magickal in itself and I recommend doing so with a mortar and pestle over a bowl if you can. You can also use food coloring or other pigments. I use mica because it is dry and has similar consistency as salt so that it blends well. It is the same mineral that mineral eye shadow is made from and you can definitely use old eyeshadows for this purpose. Store your salts in a dry place, preferably in satchets or jarred.
How to Use
You can use these salts in any corresponding spell as you would any other tool on your altar or in your cabinet. Substitute them as you would use the components that they are made of. For example, if you would use Rose Petals and Rose Quartz for a love spell, you may choose to use Pink Salt instead or in conjunction. These salts also make a great addition to spell jars and may also be used as talismans themselves as they carry their own magickal energy!
If you aren't the creative type, I have salts for sale individually/a la carte or as a bundle in my shop in several different sizes and colors ready to be used for your Craft! You may find them at blursedbaubles.etsy.com
Happy Crafting!

Whatโs a good resource to learn rootwork?
currently iโm reading a book called,ย โHoodoo for Beginners,โ by Angela Belard, and from the bit Iโve read itโs really, really good. Itโs also fairly cheap and you can get it on kindle.ย
You can also check my pinned post for more information! The other bit of advice I have is to reach out to your ancestors and let them guide you, as theyโll be the best resource. but understandly thatโs not easy for everyone.ย
I would start with a book and go from there.ย
My faves are labradorite...lapis lazuli and tigers eye oh yeah cant forget my moonstones either and green aventurine and jade and amethyst lol โคโคโค๐๐
Talk to the jar.
Or to the mojo bag or to the candle or to any conjure. I've been trying to stress that conjure is like giving birth to a child. You have to care for it because it will die if you don't.
So if you have a honey jar treat is amazingly, play music for it, keep it warm. If you have a sour jar curse at it, shake it angrily, tell it what you want to happen.
Because it's a living thing that needs care. Keep in mind you're creating a living thing.
Edit: { I canโt believe I have to say this bc my page should let this be known but; DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES INTERACT WITH MY CONTENT IF YOU ARE A WHITE HOODOO PRACTITIONER, your ass will regret it }

THE SUN:
"The home of Leos, masculine energy, proud, courageous, creative, warm hearted, joyous, optimistic, and luxurious."
Sunday, 11:11 AM (Sunday: insight to the current problems in your life, divine intervention, and healing of the soul. 11:11 AM: magical transformation, manifestation, cosmic blessing, law of attraction, abundance, and wishes granted.)
Deities: Ayanwu, Amaterasu, Apollo, Inti, Olwen, Sรณl, and Unelanuhi (Spider Woman)
Lighter
Incense
Bowl
Water
Empty bottles
Sticky note
Marker
Flowers (optional)
Perfume or essential oil
Body gel
Gold or copper highlighter/eyeshadow (makeup)
It is important that you do this spell on a sunday morning for it will be more effective. Before doing this spell, ask which deity wants to work with you, if none of the deities listed wants to work with you, work with the deity that you usually work with, or search for other deities that are connected to the sun. Once you know which deity wants to work with you, prepare your alter outside, and put down offerings for them. Make sure to cleanse your space and energy with smoke. Take a bowl, put crystals around the bowl, and then pour water into the bowl, this water will be used to make sun water so make sure its directly under the sun. In the meantime you can bask in the sun, doing so will recharge your energy, and help ease your mind. Once you felt water has been in the sun long enough (make sure its clean!), take your sun water, pour it into a bottle for later. Then take another bottle, place a sticky note onto it, then write down your wish, and the deity's name, this will be the title for your potion. Now its time to make a potion: put a few drops of the sun water into a new bottle, put in flowers, your favorite perfume (or essential oil), body gel, gold or copper highlighter/eyeshadow, and put it into the bottle. Shake the bottle and there you have a magical sun potion! Use this potion only on your body! ๐ซโจ
Benefits of this spell: Glowy sunkissed tan skin, manifest your desired friend group, have a vivacious personality, step into the room and there will be all eyes on you, be a walking god/goddess, be popular and famous, be optimistic and less pessimistic, heals and removes blockages from your solar plexus, calms anxiety, bring in positive vibes, more energy (less tired and lazy), have the inspiration to create art, and better mental health.
