i don't even have the precursor of the book to influence my opinion but after giving it a fair shot and taking some time to think about it...the wuthering heights movie was such slop. in similar fashion to how Gone Girl (as a film) got reduced to cheap sensationalism to play to the sociocultural trends at the time rather than preserving the original suspense in the book by being a murder MYSTERYYYY. I think the Wuthering Heights movie tries so hard to subvert the original themes in the book by applying a 21st century analysis to it. but all that happens is the movie feeling empty and devoid of meaning. For a second everything post modern as a genre actually exemplified what post modernism IS but now it is all just repetitive slop. I think the director assumed we'd fall into the world despite the lack o depth because the visuals and sound are engaging (and def the better part of the film) but more than anything it just is a sell out to what is trendy. I love aesthetics but there is something so prevalently empty behind them in our society today. Visual media originally used artistic choices to portray and communicate meaning. But now that western culture has lost itself in the over integration of subjective meaning instead of core universal truths, I suspect film makers know they no longer have to put effort into genuine storytelling.
