REBLOG OF THE ORIGINAL POST so y'all can actually have an active link. Story down below in case original link doesn't work ! ˶ᵠᵠįµĖ¶
Her fingers were cold, practically lifeless as he held onto them tightly. Her usually vibrant skin was pale, alarmingly so despite the dull contrast provided by the lack of light in the train car. There was the occasional span of light that could be seen gliding across the wall as it shined in from the city outside, the only other semblance of light in the cabin coming from the fireplace in the corner. It seared with heat in a vain attempt to warm up his beloved currently lying under layers of blankets.
Her brow was creased in what he knew was agony, a slight sheen of sweat across her face reflecting the light from the fire. He could feel, even through just holding her hand, how much her body still trembled, incapable to produce enough body heat to sustain itself. What caused a wave of pain to wrap around his lungs, however, a throbbing settling in the back of his throat, were the whimpers that refused to stop. When it got bad and her soft cries became mingled with suffering moaning and sobbing it was all he could do to clench his jaw and try to comfort her, swallowing in his own pitiful attempts to keep his glistening eyes from overflowing.
His hair was probably a mess from all the times he had ran his hands through it, his clothes most likely looking tatty by now. He was unsure how many hours it had been since they placed her here, him having grabbed the nearby chair from the desk to sit by her, not moving since. He could care less about what time it was though, preoccupying himself with his other hand as he gently stroked the back of his knuckles down her cheek. He wasnāt sure if she could hear him or not, but it was worth a try.
āI know you can pull through this, loveā¦ā He trailed off, his voice but a whisper as he leaned in, his head coming to rest next to her own on the pillow. The hand that wasnāt already wrapped around her digits was up by her hair, his fingers running through the strands as his red-rimmed eyes took another glance at the dull pallor of her skin. Despite the constant whimpers being muttered under her breath, he couldnāt help but suddenly squeeze his eyes shut as another great cry escaped her. His lips quivered for a moment before he sucked in a breath and swallowed the lump in his throat, burying his nose in the crown of her hair as he kissed her temple.
āPleaseā¦āĀ He croaked, his throat dry as he struggled to speak. This was his fault. She was only like this because of him. He could have done the mission by himself, he knew he should have done it by himself, but she once again managed to convince him to tag along. It wasnāt that he didnāt have faith in her skills, in fact, she was one of the best fighters he had ever seen, but he knew the repercussions of this particular assignment while she didnāt. The very thing they had set out to destroy had been used to bring her downfall. He saw the knife in his hand as they fought, saw how his own gun was too slow as he shot a second too late, the blade cutting her before being thrown across the room from the bullet hitting its mark. The wound itself was nothing serious, of course, but it was all that was needed to begin the count down of the minutes she had left to live.Ā
He was taken out of his sudden recall at the sound of her pained voice, his eyes snapping open.
āJ-JacobāĀ He could barely hear her whimper, the sound once again making his heart squeeze in his chest at the phantom pain that seemed to constrict around his ribs. He immediately became alert as her form trembled harder, her teeth chattering.Ā
āIām here love, Iām hereā¦ā He responded, speaking the words into the side of her hair, hoping they got through to her to bring the comfort she needed. It seemed as if her condition did nothing but worsen as the night wore on, causing the fear and concern that had embedded itself into his heart to spike. The doctor told him there was no guarantee she would make it, and despite the small exposure to the poison she still only had a fifty-fifty chance on survival. If she could just get through the first night, though, fight it out as the poison made its way through her system,Ā then, he said, she would beĀ fine.Ā She would live.
Her moaning suddenly worsened, her bodyās trembling starting to resemble violent shaking. Jacob couldnāt help the desperation that began to outline his features. He didnāt know what to do. What was he even supposed to do? Was this how his father felt as he watched the life slip away from his mother? Was this truly how it felt to watch someoneĀ die-?
No. He couldnāt think like that, he was not going to give up like that. His jaw clenched as a sense of stubborn persistence embedded itself into his eyes. Despite her worsening condition, he tried to preserve as much heat as possible, discreetly lifting the numerous blankets and crawling in next to his beloved. He hoped his own body heat could provide the warmth she yearned for. It was the last thing he could do to help her, and he could only hope his efforts werenāt in vain.
As he protectively wrapped his arms around her, pulling her gingerly into his broad chest, he noted how her fevered skin could easily mislead from the true suffering she was facing, only feeling how ice-cold she truly felt in her hands and feet. Her trembling and whimpering at first didnāt stop as his hand came up under the covers to pet her hair, continuing his attempts to comfort her. Subconsciously, at least, she seemed to react, the lifeless hands he felt pressed against his chest just barely moving, weakly trying to grasp at his shirt.
Ā She had always complained before how he was a human heater, and how she sometimes refused to sleep under the covers with him during the summer months. But during the cold nights, she did nothing but cling to him. He would tease her about it, but he secretly loved it. He loved the feeling of holding her peaceful form in his arms. To know she was safe, protected,Ā unharmed.Ā
His teeth once again clenched together as he tried to keep himself in check, the memories overwhelming him as he instead tried to divert his attention to the present. The hand he had soothingly stroking her hair rested at the back of her head, delicately guiding her to rest in the crook of his neck as he buried his face in the top of her strands. He breathed in her scent, the only source of comfort he had in the somber cabin.Ā
Evie had tried to console him sometime earlier, but even she knew that her attempts were useless as he did nothing but stay by his loverās side, waiting for her to wake up. She had also left some time ago to be with Henry at his Curio shop, and he hated how that fact stung him. How he could feel nothing but hateful jealousy. He also knew Evie was saddened to see the woman lying in his arms as much as he did, and he felt selfish in believing he was the only one suffering. But in a way he was, though, both twins understanding the anguish Jacob was currently going through was nothing Evie could ever experience herself.
The familiar feelings of drowsiness began to creep up on him, causing his eyes to snap open. No. He couldnāt sleep. Not yet. He was so afraid that if he did, that when he woke upā¦
He bit his lip, the familiar ache in his throat coming back with a vengeance. He squeezed his eyes shut again, but it was no use. His internal battle was finally lost, a few tears steadily making their way down his cheeks to soak the pillow beneath him. His quivering lips couldnāt help themselves as they mumbled into her hair, his arms tightening around her.Ā
āYou canāt leave me nowā¦āĀ he faintly demanded like a child, his voice cracking as he finally let his emotions slip. As if to answer him, the woman he was cradling emitted a drawn out whimper. The sound only caused more tears to fall, Jacob at least trying to keep his breathing under control as to not disturb her.Ā
He could feel the drowsiness grow stronger the more he lied with her, but he still fought it off as he once again began stroking his loverās hair, switching off to caress her face with his fingers in hopes of willing away the whimpers from her lips. He knew nobody could see him, but he still sniffled as he wiped the wetness off of his face. He felt it was a useless notion, knowing that his face was not bound to stay dry for long. The only reason he was trying to keep his tears at bay in the first place was because he was afraid. He didnāt want to accept the fact- to give in to his emotions, and believe that there was a chance she might not be with him anymore.Ā
Unbeknownst to him, his body began to relax as exhaustion from the dayās events began to take over. His eyes remained closed once more in an attempt to stem the flow of tears, his thoughts alone provoking his glassy eyes to threaten to overflow again. At least his idea to share his body heat proved to actually be beneficial, as for the most part, the womanās trembling had been significantly reduced. He only wished he could ease her suffering though, knowing she must still be in a state of great pain.
His breathing unconsciously steadied itself to slow long breaths, his mind finally nodding off despite his heart screaming at him not to. For a moment he tried fighting with himself, fighting with his eyelids to stay open. He couldnāt, he had to be there for her⦠she could leave himā¦Ā he needed toā¦
Ā Ā Ā She was fine a moment ago. She was right there, talking to him. Smiling at him. What happened? Why was she now limp in his arms? Ā Ā Ā āLove, look at me! Open your eyes!ā He pleaded, his lover barely answering him as her eyes opened a sliver. Ā Ā Ā āI-Iām fine, Jacobā¦ā She tried to console, a faint smile coming to her lips. Jacob just shook his head. Ā Ā Ā āJust stay with me, alright? I just need you to keep listening to the sound of my voice.ā Jacob rushed out, the concern evident in his tone, his hazel orbs frantically trying to find the source of his loverās distress. Why was she so pale? Look so void of⦠life? Ā Ā Ā Her eyes suddenly closed, any semblance of life finally leaving her form as her body went limp in his arms. Panic and despair instantly exploded across his chest. Ā Ā Ā āLove! Donāt do this! You canāt do this! Not yet!ā He shouted, his hand coming up to rest on her cheek, lightly tapping it in a vain attempt to wake her.
Nothing.
Ā Ā Ā He became desperate. Shaking her, his breathing suddenly labored as he shouted out her name, multiple times. His voice became hoarse, trying, searching, looking for any sort of reaction. Mentally he hadnāt accepted it, but his heart already had, his face contorting into a grimace as the tears randomly appeared without his consent, falling without remorse down his face. He unconsciously began rocking back and forth with his lover in his arms, the sobs already wracking his body.
Ā Ā Ā He finally laid his head in defeat on her chest, a scream of despair erupting from his lips.
He woke up with a start, gasping as his hazel orbs frantically took in his surroundings.Ā The train car.Ā He was in the train car. The familiar squeaks and screeching of the metal wheels grating on the tracks greeted him as the train continued on, the room swaying just slightly from side to side. It was just a nightmare. His breathing was rapid as he finally realized the contents of his dream were untrue.Ā
Well, at least most parts of the horrible nightmare were untrue, his face scrunching up as his brow creased in despondency. The familiar pangs of guilt and despair faintly made their way back again as the dull ache settled in his chest. He could feel her still form against his side, but nonetheless he looked to his left to see her sound asleep, looking more peaceful than ever as she lied on her back.Ā
The blinding sun streamed in from the windows outside, her face perfectly illuminated. He was unsure if it was the sun bleaching out the color of her skin or just the fact that she had been so sickly, but she practically seemed to glow. This prompted a thought to suddenly pop into his mind, however, his years of seeing death suddenly causing a wave of anxiety to fall upon him. The air of the cabin was already cold as it threatened to permeate the blankets enveloping him, but it seemed to physically still as something dawned on him. A chill inevitably went down his spine.Ā She wasnāt making a sound.
Fear made his eyes instantly go wide as a vice-like grip squeezed at his heart. His hands threatened to tremble as he brought one of them up under the covers to take hold of her chin, delicately moving her face towards him.
āLove?ā He asked cautiously, the panic easily detectable in his voice. His eyes danced across her form, looking for any sign of life, his mind so clouded with fear that he was unable to tell if she was even breathing or not.Ā
No response. His breathing started to grow rapid again as he lightly tapped her cheek, much like he did in his nightmare-
He shook his head back and forth, physically indicating his denial of the situation as he propped himself up on his elbow. He still maintained his hold on her chin, now a bit more firm as a sense of despair mingled in with the desperation that was evident in his features.
āLove, LoveĀ please-āĀ
āPleaseĀ what?ā
A weak hand shot out and feebly grabbed onto his wrist, his mind just barely able to recognize this fact as he froze, trying to register the groggy words he just heard.Ā
Slowly, ever so slowly, she peeled open her eyes, at first having to consistently blink them in order to get used to the bright train car. The first thing that came into focus was the sight of Jacob, lying across from her. What caused a spark of worry to ignite in her own self, however, was seeing the emotions clearly splayed across his face. Ā He also hadnāt made a sound, just staring at her in concerned incredulity.Ā
āJacob?ā She softly said, hoping to snap him out of whatever trance he was in. It seemed to do the trick as without warning he instantly gathered her in his arms, squishing her against his chest as he buried his face in her hair.
The woman nearly yelped in surprise, but still being rather weak she just allowed her eyes to widen as her mouth parted in shock. The last thing she could recall was being in blinding pain as she went in and out of consciousness in Jacobās arms. The sound of his voice soon wasnāt enough to keep her awake as her body shut down from the agony. She could understand how that must have not been a fun time for him, but surely he would have known that he had no reason to worry? She had never seen him in such a state. He had been concerned for her well being before, of course, but not likeĀ this. He wasnāt making a sound, but his unsteady breathing and shaking was all she needed to know that he wasĀ crying.Ā
In an effort to console him she meagerly wrapped her arms around his muscular shoulders, not used to seeing the strong, confident Jacob Frye reduced to a mere puddle of emotions. How long had she been out to make him like this? Surely he didnāt thinkā¦?Ā Oh, no.Ā She finally put two and two together as her mind backtracked to being woken up, to seeing his face for the first time.
Ā āJacob, Iām right here. You didnāt actually think-ā She tried to soothe, but was cut off by the broken voice of the master assassin.
āI didnāt know what to think.ā He managed to get out through his tears. As he cradled the woman in his arms, she remained silent, for words were unnecessary to respond to his distress as she buried her face in the crook of his neck. Her nose was ice cold against his skin but he could care less, for he was able to feel her breathing gently against his neck. She also somehow managed to bring up one of her hands to run through his hair, the action causing him to be unable to suppress the blissful laugh that blurted out of him, sounding more like a sob than anything. She was here, she was alive,Ā she was going to be okay.Ā
āItās going to take more than a bit of poison to bring me down.ā The woman stated confidently, and despite her frail state, the solid resolve in her voice reverberated through Jacobās being. He could easily believe the words too, but he couldnāt help it. She was his world; she made his life feel full of nothing but vibrant experiences, and she had already created so many joyful memories. The thought of that being ripped out of his life honestly scared the shit out of him.Ā
āThat might be true, but you still gave me quite a scare.ā He admitted, his tears finally starting to ebb as he wiped at his face.Ā
āI know⦠Iām sorry.ā She whispered as she placed a feather-light kiss on his neck. The action alone caused a smile to upturn Jacobās lips, his form pulling away slightly to return the affectionate gesture by giving a gentle kiss to his belovedās forehead.
āDonāt be, weāll worry about it later.ā He mumbled in a tender tone, his gaze full of nothing but adoration as he looked upon her face. She was still rather pale, but she at least had some semblance of color unlike yesterday.Ā
She merely smiled back at him, understanding what he was truly concerned about instead. For once she didnāt argue with him, seeing the need to get better as well. This both concerned and relieved him. He tried not to overthink it too much though, instead just enjoying the moment as he went to lie down next to his beloved again.Ā
Any remaining tears on his face were wiped away by her free hand as his head rested in front of hers. He easily felt how cold the digits still were, however, and seeing as this unsatisfied him he grasped her hand away from his face, instead placing it against his chest where his heart was, his own hand completely covering her own. She let out a soft giggle at his actions, causing him to hum in contentment, his eyes closing as she still insisted on running her other hand through his hair.
Upon noticing the true smile that finally spread across Jacobās face she couldnāt help but look at him with a loving gaze, happy to know he was no longer worried. She knew he adored it when she played with the strands, her hand tugging on the chocolate locks from time to time. When he couldnāt sleep she would do this, or if he was becoming annoying from being too rowdy. He was like a puppy as he would instantly quite down, becoming like putty in her hands as he obediently sat and allowed her to play with his hair.Ā
Her condition soon prevailed in being unable to be ignored for too long, however, her body unfortunately beginning to tremble again from all the heat that had escaped the warm cocoon the couple created.Ā
Jacob instantly recognized her form quivering, the concern he felt earlier starting to creep back as his eyes snapped open to fall on her.Ā
āCold?ā He asked, despite already knowing the answer. The concern he felt tugged at him as he noticed her cheeks were still flushed with fever. She might have been awake and alert, but that didnāt mean she was anywhere near out of the woods yet.Ā
The woman only nodded in response, her teeth on the verge of chattering. Jacob wasted no time to pull her in closer to him, his hand rubbing up and down her back in an effort to create some heat. His eyes couldnāt help but to glance back at the dying embers lying in the fireplace as well. He would need to get that going again.Ā
āLet me go start up the fire-ā He began to say, motioning to leave the bed, but he was unable to even finish as a pair of hands firmly grasped onto his shirt, preventing him from moving.
āScrew the fire. Youāre hot enough.ā She stated, snuggling into his chest as she got comfortable clinging onto his form. She wasnāt lying either, for it didnāt take long for the heat radiating off of Jacob to begin warming her up again.
āOh really? Am I now?ā Jacob suddenly teased, the woman cracking open her eyes as she realized how suggestive her words sounded. She merely sighed at her own mistake.
āDonāt even start.ā She warned, sending the younger Frye twin a playful glare. Perhaps it was appreciating the lighthearted moment, or finally acknowledging the seriousness of the situation had lifted, but Jacob couldnāt help the overwhelming sense of happiness and relief that flowed through him. His lips remained permanently stuck in a smile at seeing the woman he adored starting to come back to him. Without any warning he affectionately pressed his lips against her own.Ā
Her reaction was immediate, and feeling how weak she was as she tried to kiss back caused him to be ever the more careful, his hand coming up to cradle her head in hopes of helping her out. She hummed into the kiss, indicating she approved of his actions, but Jacob knew better than to continue on. He parted his lips from her, albeit rather unwillingly, for he knew in her state the last thing she needed was to be exhausted, already seeing she was becoming short of breath.Ā
Upon seeing her pout at him promptly stopping he couldnāt help the short laugh that escaped him, his lover looking nowhere as amused as he did. Along with mirth, though, the adoration he held for her glistened in his eyes as he fondly met her gaze. He caressed the hand he had still pressed against his chest with his thumb.
āI love you.ā He said tenderly, his low voice husky. The pout on his belovedās face was quickly replaced by a compassionate look of her own, especially as she took in his words.
āI love you too.ā She quietly responded, softly smiling up at Jacob as her affections for the man quickly went on display in her features. She nuzzled into him, the romantic action causing a sense of peace to wash over him.
He couldnāt evenĀ thinkĀ of living in a world without the woman before him.
