hey quail! i got a friend who’s looking for some YA romance/fantasy reads revolving around mlm couples and i was wondering if you by any chance had some recs that fit the bill? or heck even a goodreads for them to peruse, figured asking here could be good for anyone else also looking for recs 😆
hallo!! ohoho what a fun request! :DDD thank you for thinking of me hehe
firstly i must disclaim: i don't read YA and i'm not so much of a fan of romance or romantasy as a genre in and of itself, BUT i do read a lot of LGBTQIA+ SFF, so what i'm gonna do is give some recs of books in that genre that also have m/m romance and hopefully something will fit the bill! (i do apologise in advance but some of these recs will tend towards the more adult or darker side - i will warn accordingly!) funnily enough, when looking at my reading history i've got a lot more f/f recently than m/m!
also as a final thing, if anyone wants these books and can't get hold of them (some are either hard to find or Canada only or whatever) please do hit me up, i'm always happy to share my library!
The Last Herald-Mage by Mercedes Lackey
I was a really late-comer to Lackey because her books weren't really sold in the UK (i found one of the Valdemar books in Borders before it shut and that's it!), but i read this in 2022 and absolutely devoured the entire trilogy. it's absolutely brilliant, and the m/m relationship was SUPER satisfying for me! the setting is really rich and well-written, it's a classic
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
this is a sort of gaslamp fantasy with gentlemen and some really lovely worldbuilding! i loved this one a lot, it felt cosy in the way gaslamp fantasy always does to me (NOT this "cosy fantasy" thing that people are all over these days lol). the second book in this series is also brilliant, but it's focused more on an f/f relationship (which is also really nice!!)
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
this one might be an obvious rec, but i fucking LOVED this series!! the main character is disabled so he's obviously catnip for me, and even MORE catnip is it's a heist story at its essence, which i fucking adore. the m/m relationship is SO cute too, big recommend. (i was nowhere near as keen on the Grisha books, the Crows are my babies)
Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat (darker rec)
another classic and for a damn good reason. absolutely addictive, lush worldbuilding and a really compelling and lovely m/m relationship!! ofc this one is marked as darker because it's also essentially slavefic, so YMMV on that front. however, it's fucking brilliant. big recommend
Mind Fuck (the Administration Series) by Manna Francis (darker rec)
this one is very much on the darker end of the recs, but it's so delicious and WHAT A CONCEPT. it's a bit of a dark dystopia vibes with lots of very very kinky sex and torture, so heed all warnings on this one. however it got me properly in its grasp and i ate up the entire series lol. very much a toxic ship tho
Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling
the first one in the Nightrunner series and another classic! Flewelling also completely passed me by because her books just never came to the UK, but when i tell you i absolutely flew through every single one of these books, they are sooo good!! quite political fantasy with lots of rich and fun travelling and lovely worldbuilding, and a super cute m/m pairing, oh my goddd
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
this is almost a half-rec because while i did enjoy it, it's also incredibly YA lol, but since that was the request it might be enjoyed more! cute story, lively cast of characters, and i enjoyed the m/m too. a fun and easy read!
The Magpie Lord by K.J. Charles
i don't remember much about this one, but i remember enjoying it a lot! historical fantasy style with gentlemen and magicians and whatnot. also KJ Charles is an INCREDIBLY prolific and well-loved m/m writer, so there's much to be explored in her back catalogue! mostly historical fantasy i believe
The Shattered Gates (the Rifter series) by Ginn Hale
brilliant series!! i read these a long time ago however and can barely remember shit about it apart from the ending lmao, BUT THEY'RE REALLY REALLY GOOD!!! bit of an isekai kinda vibe
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
okay this one is a cheeky rec because the m/m while definitely there (one of the main characters is bi), it's secondary to the plot. BUT THE PLOT IS BRILLIANT!!! it's a mystery-fantasy with some truly fucky and fantastic worldbuilding, and the relationship that the main character has is VERY cute and i'm love them
Heart of Stone by Johannes T. Evans
this one is another historical fantasy and a lot more romance-leaning than others! absolutely delicious slow-burn, one of the main characters is a vampire, it's just genuinely fantastic and it's indie-pubbed too which is nice
Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
a short, delightful little book about wild places and dryads and a man living in his forest cottage in peace. really lovely, highly recommend! definitely another more pure romance rec too
The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison
this is the sequel sort of to the Goblin Emperor but you don't really need to have read that (although it is also very good). it's a mystery-fantasy about the saddest, wettest elf man you ever did meet who has the ability to speak to the dead and Witness for them. the main character, Thara, is gay but very closeted due to terrible past experience, and although there's no outright m/m content in the first two books, him being gay is a huge part of his character and there's plenty of shippy things with other characters that can be enjoyed. this is a bit of a hard rec for me however, because the last book destroyed me (and my ship) so i'm still a bit [AHHHHHHHHH] about it, however the books themselves are excellent and Thara does fit the bill!
WOW that got long!!! anyway, i hope some of these books fit the bill for your friend!! and if anyone wants any other LGBTQIA+ Sci-fi/Fantasy recs, please do ask! i'm ALWAYS beyond thrilled to talk about books and i have sooo many more recs i could bring haha (especially f/f apparently!!! WHO KNEW).
for any more book stuff, my StoryGraph is here @ quail - i'm a bit sporadic with ratings and reviews, but the last two years should be all rated AND reviewed cos i was doing hero mode for fantasy bingo hehe
