In the context of Digoryās story, even though what he wants for himself and his family is good and comes from a good place, it is not the greatest good. Digory learns that life and death are the way of things, that sometimes what he thinks is best is not for the best after all, and that his life is ultimately not about him.
First, he trusts in the wisdom of Aslan, and then he surrenders to it. He lets go.
And in each of these cases, his letting go, his surrendering to the will of a higher power, brings about the greatest good. Digory protects Narnia. Kanan protects the Spectres and the Rebellion. Ezra protects Lothal and the World Between Worlds.
The light and the dark is always about the difference between the selfless choice and the selfish choice.
