   He’s blaming his absence on hatred.. on humanity? That’s like blaming a puppy for your love for it because it’s cute... something doesn’t add up. Rachel’s never been quite so religious, but something was telling her that this demon-- or not-- was different from the others.

   The whole death concept, yeah that was something to get used to. This afterlife wasn’t as bad as one might think, and there was a chance of going back to the living world, who could really argue with that? It was something to accept.

   Now, the whole coughing up a lung every few days, the constant sweating, and being personally attacked every 5 minutes which could result in a second death? That’s where hell kicks in.

   These thoughts came as Rachel’s doubled over, trying to clear her lungs of the imaginary smoke.

   Once it’s over, she notices a passing glance that happened to touch a particular nerve. The boy looked innocent enough for sure, but would that stop her from confrontation?

“Au contraire,” Miasma replies, nonplussed by Rachel’s pouting. “I’ve never found a situation where being a smartass didn’t improve the situation.”

Not…strictly speaking true. But Rachel didn’t know that.

“And anyway. If the strong survive and the weak don’t make it, what does that say about us? I mean, we’re all dead, aren’t we?”

   Oooh, oh this bitch wasn’t surviving long. With an attitude like her’s, no matter the intentions, it could piss off the wrong people. Including Rachel. She pushed aaaaaaall the wrong buttons.

   Her arms crossed with a huff, as if it would release any of that anger.

   It’s what he asked for. If he wanted a different response from her, he should have asked a different question. Idiot, strange idiot.

   His claims to be a demon gave her.. mixed feelings, for sure. Was it just that easy to believe someone with such a ridiculous claim like that? She could accept the idea of a god that existed, somewhere, but a demon right here?? He could be just the creep she pictured.

   Then again, there are snake people in the limbo they inhabited.

“Hey now,” Miasma said calmly. “Don’t go putting words in my mouth. Of course you didn’t deserve to die, none of us did.” 

Or at least, they had to believe that they hadn’t deserved to die. Certainly dwelling on it wasn’t going to help. 

“But it’s not about deserve. It’s about cause and effect. People don’t like it when you treat them like shit. They hold grudges. And you don’t want that when some royalty just told us we have to kill each other, right? You wanna be either too useful or too nice to kill, and if you can’t be useful…”

   ... She didn’t like what she was saying. It was the cold truth of this world, but she felt her denial alone would change that. Of course it wouldn’t, but that wasn’t going to stop her.
