I've seen some interesting discourse about Shane's Wasian identity and his connection or lack thereof to Japan. As a Black Brit with Carribean roots I grew fairly English, so completely recognise that disconnect from your parents or grandparents heritage. I also understand that instinct as you get older to bridge that disconnect. So consider this as Shane is getting older he speaks English obviously, he's fluent in French and now he's functional in Russian. He's watching Ilya struggle with his growing disconnect from Russia as he hasn't been able to return in years and seeing Ilya's frustration that he'll never be able to take Shane to see where he and his parent's and his grandparent's are rooted. It starts Shane reflecting on his own family make up. I don't hc Shane to be completely disconnected from Japanese culture. He probably knows a few words here and there, has grown up tasting some dishes, maybe even knows some traditional Japanese children's stories or familial traditions but it's always been a bit of a background thought (this is mostly based on my own experiences growing up to be fair). But now he's in his 30's, Ilya talks about growing up in Russia often (now that's he deep into therapy and able to open up more), he's confident in speaking and understanding Russian and even has a couple of Russian recipes under his belt. He's thinking of his mum and his Japanese grandparents - I tend to hc they're either no longer with us or returned to Japan many years ago - and wants to do for them what he's been able to do for Ilya. He decides he's going to learn Japanese, learn more about Japanese culture and visit Japan in the near future (which he hasn't since he was a child, professional hockey schedule and all).
Consider also that Ilya point blank refuses to learn French. He is also forever grateful for his husband having learnt Russian allowing Ilya to be his whole self at home. And being Shane he is always so earnestly and patiently curious about all the things Ilya feels able to share about his past and why he misses his home country. He's been wanting for a while to figure out a way to show Shane how grateful he is, plus he loves Yuna like a mother and kinda misses when Shane was just learning about Russian and they would practice together (Shane would practice and Ilya would relentlessly tease). So when they're relaxing at home one day and Shane brings up his new plan to starting learning Japanese and more about Japan for his mother, Ilya immediately gets overexcited and jumps in "we do this together". Before backtracking nervously "unless this is something you want to do for yourself", all the while Shane is just staring at him all wet doe eyes and love struck smile "no, we can do it together I would love that and so would mum" and kisses him sweetly.
Commence Shane and Ilya learning Japanese together with all the teasing and competition that will definitely follow, plus a whole new languages worth of pet names for Ilya to discover. At first they don't tell Yuna until they're both fairly conversational it doesn't take long (may be a couple years or less), they eventually suprise her on Mother's Day taking her to a top-rated Japanese restaurant in Ottawa and ordering everything in Japanese. She cries uncontrollably for several minutes, she is fluent but very rarely speaks Japanese only really if she's contacting family back home, David never learnt (no shade I love David I just don't feel like he would) and she was so fixed on hockey and wanting the best for her mixed race son she'd never pressured Shane. The fact both Shane AND Ilya have done this for her she is floored. That summer they take the long awaited Hollander-Rozanov tour of Japan with the parents, suprising Yuna even more with all the random bits of history they've been storing away as well, Yuna introduces them to family even she hasn't seen in years. After this Yuna and her boys often speak Japanese together, learn more about Japanese history and culture (Yuna sharing stories of her early childhood and that her parents told her) together and practice Japanese recipes together. David let's them have it, except for the recipes that he gets in on the cooking.
the real, actual truth - the truth that shane mentally stomped on every time it dared try to get his attention - was that he wanted ilya to meet his parents for the same reason anyone wanted their boyfriend to meet their parents: he loved him, and he wanted them to love him too.

In 2010, Yuna Hollander gave Ilya Rozanov her business card as a brand manager outside an elevator. Naturally, Ilya decided the best course of action was to become entangled with not one, but two Hollanders.
Five times Ilya was glad he hired Yuna as his brand manager and one time he really wasnât.

Aiight... I'm just gonna ask...
Does anyone have an ace/PG-13 cut of Heated Rivalry? And before you jump down my throat, I know, I KNOW that the sex scenes ACTUALLY have meaning, and important plot and relationship information happens in them. I know this. Buuuuuut, I have a friend who is Ace, and she was even in Hockey RPF (so she gets the Crosby/Ovechkin) dynamic. I want her to be able to share in the same joy as I have over Heated Rivalry but I cannot in good conscience recommend the show to her as it is, knowing how freaked out she'd get and how on-edge she'd be watching through it. Grateful if there's an ace cut of it out there that someone wants to link!!

This was created for Nora for her donation to the @iceouthr fundraiser! The prompt was to do something similar/related to the helmet kiss or Ilya in the lake at the cottage. As I am also obsessed with the helmet kiss moment, I decided to draw the helmet kiss I'm hoping to see in Unrivaled
