Weird!!

I thought of Krogan and his Singetail first because Grimmel just hypnotized his Deathgrippers, unlike Krogan, who somehow bonded with his Singetail enough so it defended him. I think Viggo would prefer to have his little bodyguard to not have the chance to suddenly snap out of his control like any of the dragons Grimmel uses (the Deathgrippers and the Light Fury. Since the ones controlled by Deathgripper venom apparently can snap out of it the moment the muzzle comes off, at least with the Light Fury that happens).

But that Singetail has nothing really controlling it.

Sure, there's the clear torture of a taming process that it must've been (the episode where Krogan hops on the back of a Singetail and it starts jumping around the arena reminds me vaguely the incorrect way to tame horses. Both animals are jumping, rearing and bucking to get the rider off their backs, but it doesn't actually get them to jump off, so eventually they just give up and accept to be ridden. It's just learned helplessness).

Sure, there's the whips, spurs and dragon proof bits (which look so painful when we think of horse bits. Bits add a lot of pressure when used incorrectly, like by the Dragon Flyers, who yanked on it whenever their dragons tried fighting back. I wonder how many of those dragons have sore gums because of the bits), all three things that the Dragon Flyers used improperly and to inflict pain, so it did cause a lot of pain.

And sure, there's probably a lot more on the "training" process those dragons have to be put through so they don't immediately kill their riders, which include the whole Singetail breeding island thing they had going on.

However. If that Singetail truly wanted to fight back, it definitely would. But it didn't, because Krogan actually formed a relationship with that animal.

Again, I come with the horse comparison. Horses may have a terrible time under saddle, they may have owners that apply too much pressure or straight up beat up their horses whenever they do something mildly wrong. Yet, those horses may still find comfort in them and feel as though they can stay close to their rider for xyz reasons. They may still bond or seek connection with the person who is harmful to them, because sometimes it's the only other creature they can interact with.

What I see is that those dragons are socially isolated, locked in tiny stalls until they're to be used and then barely getting anything else to do. That changes an animal's mind, and Krogan's Singetail probably was isolated from its pack and only had Krogan around, so it clung to that.

That's something Grimmel doesn't have. His dragons, if they were to snap out of his control, would just have his bones as toothpicks and that's it. At least as far as I know, because the third movie doesn't really show anything in depth enough for me to see anything other than "he just controls dragons with Deathgripper venom". As far as I'm aware, I haven't rewatched the movie in about 3 years.

Soo, back to Viggo and his Night Fury.

(My thing about the power was basically the first thing that came to mind at the time, but yeah, you're right! He's not there to rule the world, he's just there to be a menace /jk.

On another point, maybe he'd just keep it around because of the fact it's practically a myth and, well, he gets protection, a little hitman, anything really. Or whatever else our minds cook up lmao)

I feel like that Viggo could probably try to make the Night Fury see a safe person in him. He could very much just make up scenarios by tossing his men around to do this and that to condition the Night Fury to perceive him as not a threat, but a friend, thus they'd form a bond. And dragons, loyal as they are, will protect the ones who they bond with. It'd just take a few nudges here and there from Viggo, some training and boom, he's got a guard dog!

Ooh, when we add Drago to the mix it gets so much worse, it's delightful. That man could make so many things happen to that poor dragon and Viggo, and even Hiccup and Toothless too, if they show up at the wrong time. Drago would probably be very happy to have two Night Furies - that guy wants all the power he can get.

And augh, I feel so bad for making post-redemption Viggo unable to apologize to his Night Fury, but I still feel like he'd be unable to even if he did see the dragon, because it'd feel so betrayed after everything, it'd just think of it as another trick and would fly off, or it'd be fearful because it now relates Viggo to some sort of bad memory or feeling.

It's like if Drago got his redemption. After so much abuse, a simple apology wouldn't fix it for his Bewilderbeast. He'd just want to swim away and never have to look at Drago again.

The Night Fury not forgiving him or not staying just feels like a consequence.

In my head, Hiccup and Toothless very much want to search for that dragon. And that Night Fury is wary as hell.

Maybe it begins trusting Toothless first, since they're the same species and Toothless is very docile (unless Hiccup is harmed), and then slowly starts trusting Hiccup.

Hiccup absolutely appeals to dragons when it comes to showing he's a friend (like during S2 E9: Edge of Disaster Part Two, where he used the Dragon Fly as a way to show to the aggressive dragons he was just like them. Not a threat, a friend. Someone they could trust). Maybe it's the trauma sharing, maybe it's interacting with Toothless, or maybe a very tasty fish and a good scratch under the chin, he'll do it if it'll get the dragon to ease up around him.

I don't know, I just think that Hiccup is like a Disney princess and the dragons will eventually warm up to him.

But there could also be the sad version (for Hiccup and Toothless) where the Night Fury wants nothing to do with them and will be defensive if they do find it, so, to not hurt themselves and stress it further, they have to just let it go, despite them wanting it to be part of the team so so much.

Maybe there are other version this could lead to, maybe even Viggo's training could change, or something much better or much worse could happen. There's also so many AUs, so many choices and outcomes.
