The game is loaded with seemingly deliberate map alignments such as these to reinforce story elements. For example: when viewed from either the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria or the Church of Vows, the moon is positioned in such a way that it is eclipsed by the Erdtree, likely symbolizing the union of the house of the moon and Erdtree when Rennala married Radagon. Looking at the map, it's revealed that an alignment exists between Rennala, the Church of Vows, the Erdtree/Radagon, the Forge of the Giants, and the moon.

From Moonlight Altar, another moon becomes visible to the north. It aligns Ranni's Rise and Chelona's Rise, where Ranni's Dark Moon sorcery resides. Simultaneously, Chelona's Rise aligns with Maliketh/the Rune of Death in Farum Azula and the eastern moon.

The east moon is seemingly associated with Rennala, and may actually be her Full Moon based on its positioning and the item description for the Great Hood; the north moon is thusly connected to Ranni, and may be the Dark Moon itself, hence the alignment of Ranni's Rise.

The alignment with the Rune of Death could be a subtle nod to the fact that Ranni stole the Rune of Death, in order to "weave her night into being." As we learn from Ranni's Dark Moon, Rennala had assisted Ranni in mastering its power. If the east moon is actually the Full Moon, this raises some intriguing implications as far as Rennala's involvement in Ranni's tutelage...

If she implored Ranni to master the Dark Moon, did she know her daughter would seek the Rune of Death? Did she know another's soul would need to be sacrificed in order for Ranni to liberate herself from her Empyrean flesh...?

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
