“I’m not afraid.” Alisha commented, watching the other carefully to mimic his moves the best she could.  “I just know my realm of capabilities, and this might not be it.”

“Might.” Matty commented in a matter of fact tone, “so there’s like, a chance.”

Riley tried his best to look pissed off but he soon laughed. “Nah, nothing hurts for long these days.” He shook his head. “Should be asking you the same thing. You alright, man? All limbs still attached?” Riley had his hands on the ground but took a second to put them on Matty’s sides to support him just in case he was hurt.

“I’m good, nothing that wont heal.” Matty said snorting another laugh, before pausing to look down at him, “but we should probably, like, get up before we get trampled. If I wanted to be roadkill I’d turn into a squirrel.” The shifter said, finally easing up from the vampire, once standing he offered him a hand.

“Dude…” Riley had only been walking when he rounded the corner and was knocked down by Matty who had been jogging. “I get that I’m cute and stuff.” He joked with a small chuckle.

“Shit!” Matty exclaimed as he fell to the ground with a thud. With both his arms on either side of the vampire he leaned up to look at him, music still blaring from his headphones. “My bad,” Matty said, laughing as the embarrassment set in. “I didn’t like, hurt you did I?”

“Exactly. I’m not fucked until I actually get caught. So for now, we are fine.” She said with a smile large enough to cause her nose to wrinkle with excitement. The whole thought of doing an event with him along was enough cause a small number of butterflies to flutter in her. “You don’t give yourself enough credit. I bet you are like the hot teacher that all the students talk about. Everyone wants to be in your class and every time you turn around all the girls giggle and look at you. I would be that girl if I was in your class.” 

The shifter leaned back in his seat, reaching with his free hand to stab at his plate once again. Admittedly having forgotten it was even in front of him. “That’s fair.” He said, mulling it over. He’d done a lot of stupid things in his life making him the last to judge. “Nawh, I doubt it.” He’d always considered himself to be a cool teacher, sure, but that was as far as it went. “Besides, I’m not even like a teacher teacher. Just only sometimes. Or a lot, this town can’t keep teachers to save it’s life.”

“Isn’t this like, way more suspicious?” Matty asked, poking his head into the closet he’d been guarding. “Like, I’m knocking your master plan and all but--” Matty stopped, squeezing through the narrow opening and accidentally closing the door behind him. “I’m starting to get weird looks and I think they’re onto us. What are we doing exactly?”

Looking at their hands for a moment she tilted her head happily and just enjoyed the moment for a second. Hearing the information of a background check was all she needed it caused her interest to peak further. “Yeah. I’m pretty sure I could do that… I haven’t actually gotten caught for anything before.” She said with a shrug as she thought about it. “Pretty sure I could pass that.” 

The shifter let his thumb gently rub against her’s in a soothing pattern. Her reply made him laugh, he wasn’t expecting that answer. But then again, he never quite knew what was going to come out of her mouth and he liked it. “Well, I guess it only like really counts if you get caught.” Matty said, shaking his head. “Totally could. Plus, like, I’d probably get more kids to join if you were there.”

“Oh my god. Did your mama pay for that haircut as well?” They asked with a playful grin before nodding slowly. “Most people that claim they are cool aren’t actually cool but sadly, I guess that does make me a bit of a dweeb. Im blaming it on your cute face. Who could say no to that wittle face?” Si reached over and pinched the others cheek. “Oh well, what would you do without me?” 

The shifter shot them a playful glare before taking another bite from his food. “Oh please I wish. Haircuts are like really expensive now.” He said between bites. Despite his parent’s failed attempts, Matty had never been a graceful eater. It didn’t matter if he tried or not, the meal always ended in some etiquette rule being broken or something being spilled. He liked to think it added to his charm. Somehow. “Hey--” He protested  leaning back from the sudden gesture, laughing as he did so. “Yeah, just imagine how I was before I broke my jaw. Total cute overload, got away with everything. Or like, I totally did until my brother and sister were born.” A pause, “and y’know to be honest if you weren’t here I probably would have just gotten take out.”

Keeping the bright smile on her face when he agreed to her outing Phobe reached out to take his hand in her own and give a small squeeze. Her eyebrows furrowed a little at the mention of her applying. “Wait. For like the school thing? I’m not smart enough that kind of stuff. I wouldn’t even hire me. Don’t get me wrong, it would be great seeing you like every day but like dude. I don’t even have a real job. I barely got a diploma and I’m pretty sure it’s only because my mom bribed my teachers..” 

When she touched him, everything felt warm. Looking down at their hands, Matty shifted his, lacing his fingers between hers. The weight was nice against his palm, it made sense. “For an after school program? All you need is to be able to pass a background check?” The shifter paused, looking back up at her. “Wait, you can pass a background check, right? Or like are you leading a secret life and are actually a hardened criminal?”

“Next Saturday. Dusk. It’s a date.” She told him only to smile thinking about himself with Joel. She didn’t know much about the situation. She did know that the kid meant a lot to him and hearing the way he talked about him always made her heart flutter a little. “I think your jaw is very handsome. Just the way it is. Crooked and all.” 

“It’s a date,” Matty repeated in a softer tone, letting the idea settle. He wasn’t sure if she meant a friend date or real one but he wasn’t about to ruin the moment. “Then I’m glad,” the shifter said, still not looking away. She was his first friend in Redmour and the closest person to him in the state. “You should do it with me.” Matty said, “I mean, like, you’d have to apply but I don’t see why you couldn’t. Everyone knows everyone here.”

Following his gaze, Riley saw that his own plate was full of food still. “Oh, nah… nah. it’s fine. I used to love sushi.” He pouted a bit and moved one of the pieces of salmon around with his own chopsticks. “Sits in my digestive tract until I have some blood. But because I’m a young vampire, it can make us feel sick. It’s really hard just to sit here and not tear into everyone.”

Matty nodded slowly, glancing at his own plate. It seemed like they’d gotten their food ages ago and he’d barely touched any of it. “So like, does that mean I have to hold your hair back later? Because I totally can,” the shifter said, attempting to lighten the mood before reaching to grab a piece of sushi from his own plate.

Just the fact he offered to go with her caused the wolf to grin. Looking down at the food they were already enjoying she thought for a moment before speaking. “We should go next weekend. Whatever time that you want.” She offered figuring it might be better for him if it was planned. “You’re face is too pretty to be fucked up even if you did fall on it.” 

Matty watched her face light up, it was a sight he could get used to seeing. “No, totally. Just let me know what your schedule looks like. Aside from Facetiming with Joel, I’m like, completely free.” Since the move to Redmour and his sister leaving for college, it had become difficult getting in contact with his family. The shifter chuckled, “I don’t know about that, my jaw is pretty crooked.”

“Sounds like a fast way to get my ass kicked. One slap and I’ll be yeeted across the room. I’ve already had my jaw broken once, man. I can’t take the liquid diet again. And don’t get me started on metal detectors. Try explaining your way out of that when you can’t open your mouth.”

“Okay but, like, have you seen their abs?”
