it's not every day that you turn up to be a patient in the ER. thank god. but your luck seems to have run out today because not only it's supposed to be your day off but you're also supposed to be having lunch date with your sisters. instead, here you are. nursing a black eye.
cassie isn't working today, nor is she on call, she simply forgot her wallet on the locker when she clocked out yesterday and she's only here to check.
it's supposed to be a quick trip until she sees you on the bed. you're holding an ice pack on your eye and from the looks of it, you're either talking to yourself or humming a song.
cassie's curiosity wins and knocks on your door. "hi. what happened to you?"
you sit up straight. "dr. mckay," you breathe out. "i'm - well, i got hit by a baseball. i was playing with my nephew."
"what?" she inches closer. her hands carefully inspects your face. your right eye can barely see but the other is perfect fine and you can see how close she is to your face. you can almost feel her breath on your lips. "oh, that's bad. did someone check you out already?"
you nod. "just waiting for an optha consult." cassie sighs in relief. "do you think i will have to go around wearing an eye patch?"
"yeah, like a pirate." cassie chuckles. "you'll be cute though."
your cheeks heat up. "t-thanks."
cassie inspects your eye again, pressing lightly on the surrounding areas. you wince in pain. "i'm not your doctor but i can get you something for the pain right now. i can ask dana."
"you're not even working today."
"doesn't matter." she shakes her head. "pain reliever?"
"that'll be great. thanks, dr. mckay."
"please call me cassie."
"cassie," you correct. "thanks, cassie."
cassie comes back a minute later with an IV pain reliever, saying it'll help faster. you stare at it for a while, trying to be brave.
"you're not afraid of needles, are you?"
"a little."
"you look like you're gonna faint on me."
"a little."
cassie bites back a smile. "just close your eyes. i'll be quick, i promise. you trust me?"
you nod then close your eyes. as promised, cassie is quick and careful. her hands are so gentle that you barely felt that she injected something in you.
"all done."
when you open your eyes, she's smiling at you, dimples flashing. you think maybe you had gone to heaven.
