The Punisher is a very interesting character in lot of ways but one of those ways is that in his original interpretation by Carl Potts is someone wanting to die... And Ennis then reinvents this original concept as someone who cannot die

The thing about Frank and Matt relationship is that the way it should work is something similar to Frank's relationship to Detective Soap where Frank allows himself to get close to him because he doesn't like him... Because Frank really should not like Matt.

So it'd be Frank really disliking Matt as a person but appreciating him professionally
