I think the quietest way a relationship changes is when your lives stop orbiting each other.
In the beginning, every spare second belongs to the other person. Every story is the first person you want to tell. Every notification feels exciting because it might be them. And then, so slowly you barely notice it happening, life grows around the relationship instead of inside it.
I know that is how it is supposed to be. Love should not ask someone to make you their entire world. It should leave room for careers, friends, hobbies, ordinary days. I know that.
What I did not expect was how lonely that lesson would feel.
So I stopped asking. I stopped asking you to call. Stopped asking you to make time. Not because I stopped wanting those things, but because I never wanted love to become another obligation on your to do list. I wanted you to choose me, not schedule me.
And maybe that is the saddest part. You never said no. You just stopped saying, “I’ll make it happen.” You agreed with every hope I had, but somehow I was always the one who had to remind you.
So I am learning to need you less. Not because I want to. Because I have to.
I always imagined love would teach me how to build a life with someone. I never imagined it would teach me how to slowly build one without them while they were still standing right beside me.
Sometimes healing and giving up wear the same face.
There was a time when I believed doing the right thing would spare people from becoming the very thing that broke them.
I watched someone I cared about have his heart shattered piece by piece. I watched him search my face for the truth he was too afraid to find. And when he finally asked me, I chose honesty over loyalty. I lost my best friend that day, but I convinced myself it was worth it. I told myself that some losses are the price of protecting someone else’s heart.
Years passed. He healed. He found someone kind. Someone whose heart looked far too gentle for this world. And I remember thinking, finally. Finally, the story had found its happy ending.
Then today I learned he had become the same person who once destroyed him.
I cannot explain why it hurts so much. Maybe because I did not just lose faith in him. I lost faith in the idea that pain makes us kinder. I always believed that if someone knew what it felt like to be betrayed, they would spend the rest of their life making sure nobody else ever had to feel that way.
But maybe that is not how people work.
Maybe broken hearts do not always create gentle hands.
And I think that is the part I cannot stop grieving. Not the relationship. Not the betrayal. Just the heartbreaking realization that even the people we save from the fire are still capable of becoming the flames.
If I am allowed one selfish wish, it is this: let me leave first. Not because I love life any less, but because I cannot imagine asking my heart to learn a world that no longer has you in it.
But if fate is unkind, if one day your hand slips from mine before mine slips from yours, then promise me you will know this. There is no version of existence where I do not find my way back to you. A thousand lifetimes. A thousand different skies. A thousand names, faces, and worlds. I would still look at you with the strange certainty of coming home.
You have never simply been someone I loved. You became the place my heart returned to after every joy, every fear, every ordinary day. I do not need to be unforgettable to the world. I do not need to belong to everyone. I only ever wanted to belong to you.
And if there is anything beyond this life, I hope it is nothing more complicated than finding your hand again and hearing you say, “There you are.” Because my heart has always known the way back to you. It always will. Thank you for giving me a love that made being alive feel like the greatest privilege I have ever known.

I stopped begging the day I realized love loses all its meaning the moment it has to be begged for.
The things I asked for were never big enough to matter. Which is exactly why they mattered. Love lives in the unnecessary. In the things no one had to do.
I wanted to know that, every once in a while, you would choose the inconvenience simply because it was me.
Now I ask once.
Because I’d rather grieve what I never received than spend another day wondering if the only reason you did it was because I begged hard enough.
There is a special kind of loneliness in missing someone who is still yours.
I think that is what hurts the most. Not that you make me feel unloved. You don’t. You love me in a hundred beautiful ways.
But somehow, in between them, there are a hundred moments that make me question whether I matter at all.
So my heart never knows where to live. It cannot leave because it has been loved too deeply. It cannot rest because it has been hurt too often. Every time I think, “There is no way someone who loves me this much would make me feel this unwanted,” you prove me wrong in one direction or the other.
And maybe that is why I am so tired. I am not trying to decide whether you love me. I am trying to understand how I can feel so loved and so lonely at the exact same time.
I used to believe that pain made people gentler. That once you knew what it felt like to have your heart broken, you would spend the rest of your life making sure nobody else’s broke because of you.
But that is not how the world works.
Some people carry their pain so carefully that they never let another soul touch it. Others hand it to the next person without even realizing they have become the thing they once prayed to survive.
Maybe that is the cruelest thing grief ever taught me. Suffering does not always make us kinder. Sometimes it simply teaches us how to survive, even if survival means becoming someone we would have once been afraid of.
The thought arrived so quietly that I almost mistook it for my own. Not a scream. Not a breakdown. Just a sentence settling into the corner of my mind and refusing to leave.
It followed me everywhere after that. Sat across from me at dinner. Curled up beside me when I slept. Waited patiently at the edge of every happy moment, as if it knew I would eventually notice it again. Some days it felt new enough to frighten me. Other days it felt ancient, like something I had been carrying long before I had words for it.
And what terrified me most was not the thought itself, but its familiarity. The way it seemed less like an idea and more like a memory. As though some part of me had been walking toward it for years without ever realizing it.

Nobody warned me that love could feel this sudden. One moment the world was exactly as it had always been, and the next, your name was stitched into every thought I had. It was there in the quiet mornings, in the songs I could not stop replaying, in the spaces beside me that somehow belonged to you even when you were not there.
And maybe that is why I keep reaching for you. Not because I am lonely, but because everything feels softer when you are close. The future, which once felt so large and uncertain, suddenly shrinks to something simple. Your hand in mine. Your head resting against my shoulder. The feeling that if you are here, then whatever comes next cannot be all that frightening.
So come a little closer. Let the rest of the world keep spinning without us for a while. There will be time for questions tomorrow, time for worries and explanations and all the things that pull people apart. Tonight, I only want this. Your arms around me. My heart finally somewhere it does not have to wander from.
I used to wish you would explain yourself kindly, as if a soft enough confession could make the years feel less wasted. Now I want the opposite. I want one ugly truth, one sentence sharp enough to ruin every beautiful thing I protected in my head. Give me something I cannot romanticise. Give me proof that the house was always colder than I let myself admit.
There are still nights when loneliness walks around my room wearing your shape, touching the backs of chairs, leaving the air bitter. But even then, even aching, I know this is better than shrinking myself beside you again, waiting for you to choose me in a room where you kept looking away. I do not miss the love as much as I resent the audition.
“You’re so funny.”
Thank you. I spent years learning exactly who I needed to be to make people stay. Somewhere between making them laugh, making them comfortable, and making them happy, I misplaced the original version of me.
I hope I marry someone who celebrates his bachelor trip not because it is the last night of his freedom, but because it is the beginning of the rest of his life. Someone who looks at marriage and sees an arrival, not a goodbye.
I hope the stories he tells his friends are not about “one last chance,” but about how unbelievably lucky he feels. Because I never want to be loved like a cage someone willingly walked into. I want to be loved like a dream they still cannot believe came true.
I don’t know what died inside me. I just know I’ve been trying to replace it ever since.

People always say there is a hole in your chest, as if it is something waiting to be filled. But I do not think that is what it is at all.
I think it is a room. One that echoes because someone left, because something never happened, because a younger version of you is still sitting inside it waiting to be chosen. And no matter how much love you pour into that room, it will always sound a little empty until you stop asking it to become something it was never meant to be.
Maybe the goal was never to fill the void. Maybe the goal was to stop believing that having one made you incomplete.
I keep mourning the life I think I should have by now, as if I have somehow arrived late to my own existence. But how can you be behind in a story that was written for you? The clock I am racing against was never mine.
