I'll be honest, I've never really felt the same way about The Death of the Author after learning its origins (Barthes was angry over a Balzac story about a chaser, written over a century prior, for referring to a character as a woman instead of a femboy no I'm not making this up)
the essay deadass starts with "it is unknowable through what lens and mentality daisuke operated when he declared that bridget was a girl"
i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me
i especially chafe at the way "cozy games" just seems like a "woke" way to say "girl games" and conflate certain game mechanics or aesthetics with a non-cis/het/male identity (to equally useless effect from a buyer's pov). gender stereotyping by any other name is still gender stereotyping. i'm not cis het or male, but i've spent decades enjoying pvp shooters and feel bored to tears by cutesy cottagecore farming sims. and i find those pvp shooters very "cozy" to play, too! @_@;
Which are better?
Concepts
Details
No nuance button because I gave up nuance for Lent
CONCEPT FANS DECLARE TOTAL VICTORY! “The votes are in, and the big picture to celebrate is that Concepts are more popular than Details.”
DETAILS FANS REFLECT ON CLOSE RACE! “While we lost, the important thing is their margin is small, only 4.8%. Details are still plenty popular.”
"i hate women" -> crowd boos and jeers
"i hate women... including trans women!" -> crowd laughs and claps and giggles, the speaker receives an ally of the year award
This is complete and utter nonsense. The world at large encourages misogyny to women both cis and trans at every level. The idea that verbal expressions of misogyny or misogynistic jokes or even just expressing hated to (cis) women is met with boos and wide condemnation is a denial of misogyny at the most basic level, anti-feminist, and completely divorced from reality.
it comes off as complete and utter nonsense to you because you interpreted it a holistic statement about the world at large rather than a complaint how rampant misogyny is allowed to exist uncriticized within even supposedly feminist spaces so long as its being perpetuated against trans women, like say, for example, responding to a woman's joke with a long tirade about how she doesn't understand something she experiences every fucking day.

tme people go 2 seconds without condescendingly explaining misogyny to trans women challenge
"oh your annoyed jokeventpost about how even in nominally progressive spaces its still considered ~funny wacky~ to say that you hate trans women if you call them women while you do it failed to account for every single possible condition? are you saying misogyny doesn't exist?"
It's hard to really get across how baffling the gatekeeping model of trans healthcare actually is.
Like. You say "maybe patients shouldn't have to put their hand in the pain box from Dune" and people go "but we should be careful". Okay. The pain box from Dune is unrelated to being careful.
"What about detransitioners?"
"Here's an entire systematic review finding that the pain box from Dune has literally no effect on anything related to detransition."
"Well it's important that we don't make people do things they regret"
?????????????????????
"So the pain box from Dune is expensive, has no demonstrable benefit to patients, many patients say the pain box was bad for them. We can remove the pain box at negative cost and it won't be missed."
"Have you considered that this radical activism is alienating moderate supporters?"
I think there’s a really odd gap in general supply chain knowledge in which people scapegoat AI as this new devastating environmental concern, when internet data centers have been an environmental problem before that. The internet already had the infrastructure to support it in 2017, before GPT-1 was released. Data centers are not a new problem. The internet already had a large physical presence, but people didn’t really think much of it until there were new AI-related developments (and then attribute all data centers to being related to generative AI? Where do people think YouTube videos are stored? The literal clouds in the sky?)
A Makeship plushie has a bigger carbon footprint than a thousand LLM queries but it is seen as an acceptable environmental impact, because it has been deemed socially acceptable to contract low wage factories in the Global South to make toys to sell to customers worldwide at a 3000% markup, with all the profits staying in the Global North. Not many people think of that environmental impact
"i hate women" -> crowd boos and jeers
"i hate women... including trans women!" -> crowd laughs and claps and giggles, the speaker receives an ally of the year award
"I hate men" -> apprehensive silence, isolated claps and maybe one or two cheers
"I hate men... including trans men!" -> okay listen here buddy pal dude guy man male xy chromosome brother in christ
“It’s easy to assume”: someone’s misconception is about to be amiably corrected
“It’s tempting to assume”: someone’s assumption is about to be criticized
“It’s comforting to assume”: someone’s assumption is going to be read for filth

To put it in dumber words,
Tags here making the crucial point that it's not that art is politically useless as a rule, but that individualist, spontaneous agitation is ineffective. Propaganda can be as useful for us as for them, but it needs to be produced for clear aims to suit the circumstances, spread and utilised effectively as part of a defined programme and strategy.
The conclusion here, as ever, is not to abandon political art as a concept but to get organised!
I hate the "early-transition trans women are always wearing amazon basics skirts" stereotype so much lol
-she shops online instead of going to real stores, lol what a neet basement dweller
-she buys from amazon, she both has no sense of personal style and is an unethical consumer giving money to bezos
-she is sticking to basic, stock standard, stereotypical presentation of femininity, lol isn't it funny that she's taking careful baby steps and doesn't feel comfortable branching out?
it's the amazon that really does it in for me. when cis women wear basic clothing it's the "clean girl" aesthetic, when trans women do it it's shallow, consumerist, mass-produced, "basic" in all the wrong ways. "clean girls" don't get made fun of for having walmart-ass wardrobes do they?
a cis woman's choices about her wardrobe are always conscious, intentional, well-considered. a trans woman's are unthinking, dumb, she just grabs the first thing she sees
anyway remember when the US government commissioned a study on dangers of pornography and when the commission returned with a report saying it doesn’t pose a danger and recommending removing restrictions the US government denounced its own study
republicans: homeless people should be ground into sausage and fed to schoolchildren
democrats: persons experiencing houselessness should be ground into sausage and fed to schoolchildren
this post posits a utopian world where either of these parties would support feeding schoolchildren, making it a masterclass in "hopepunk"
I've seen some posts trying to make fun of former gifted kids by comparing them to former student athletes who insist that they could have gone pro if not for a specific injury, and those posts always backfire, because my reaction to them is "You're right, we should treat former student athletes with more compassion than we currently do"

the tweet pretending to be a japanese person going to a mexican restaurant is not a "milkshake duck" you are just stunningly racist and willing to believe basically any caricature of an asian person that's presented to you no matter how racist if it reconfirms your orientalist and chauvinistic biases
Useful image for when your internet friends have rain in their cities and you don’t
