Although the category isn’t exclusively for Korean artists or music from South Korea, a lot of the conversation I’ve been seeing online has centred on what other Korean artists are going to do. They’re the ones who will probably see this as their biggest opportunity yet to earn a Grammy nomination, and perhaps even win one.
That’s what makes this so fascinating. Technically speaking, BTS belong to the very same industry as those artists. They’re the biggest, most established, and most globally recognised act to come out of it, and in many ways they’ve been the pioneers when it comes to establishing themselves in Western markets. So when a group in that position makes such a principled decision, it inevitably creates a point of comparison for everyone else.
Imagine another K pop group facing exactly the same situation and saying, “I don’t care if this category exists because of my ethnicity or where I was born. I want that nomination. I want that recognition. I want that validation.” The moment they make that decision, people are likely to compare them with BTS, and suddenly the conversation stops being about career strategy and starts becoming a moral debate.
That’s the part I find most interesting. I can’t help wondering whether these conversations are also happening privately. A lot of these artists know each other, and several BTS members are friends with idols from other groups. I genuinely wonder whether they’ve talked about this.
Can you imagine a BTS member saying, “I don’t want recognition in that way anymore. I don’t need it. My fans have already validated my career, and I’ve proved over and over again that I can succeed without that award.” And then another artist replying, “I do want it. I don’t care how it comes. I want that opportunity because it could change my career.”
Neither perspective is necessarily wrong because they come from completely different places. BTS have already reached a level where they can afford to reject something they no longer feel they need. Other artists are still trying to reach that point, and for them a Grammy nomination could genuinely transform their careers. That’s why I think reducing the conversation to who has more integrity completely misses the complexity of the situation.
In that sense, BTS’s decision has placed the rest of the K pop industry in an incredibly interesting position. Whether they like it or not, every artist who chooses to submit, or chooses not to, will probably be compared with BTS. People will inevitably assign meaning to those decisions, even if the motivations behind them are entirely different.
So far, no major K pop artist has publicly supported BTS’s decision. The only notable exception has been Tablo, which makes sense given his own history and perspective. But it’ll be fascinating to see whether anyone else eventually speaks up or whether most artists simply choose to stay silent and make their own decisions behind the scenes.
BTS may have made their decision from a position that very few artists will ever reach, but that decision has also created a benchmark, whether intentionally or not. The real question is whether it’s fair to expect every artist who comes after them to be judged against it. The reactions to those future decisions may end up revealing just as much about the industry and its audience as they do about the artists themselves. That’s why I’m almost as interested in what happens next as I am in BTS’s decision itself.
I really hope they will publish a supercut of the in-drama movie / series in the proper order of the scenes.

Obviously phatsa is having a very strange time but I do appreciate that Nakhun also seems to be having the weirdest freaking week of his life
Like the man gets his usual coffee but this time there’s a smell on the coffee cup and he’s immediately. Completely obsessed with it. To the point that he asks for surveillance footage to see who held the cup. To the point of keeping the cup around so he can smell it. He’s fantasizing about whoever this cup smells like. He’s coming apart at the seams and all he has is a smell. And by the reactions of people around him this is clearly very far from his usual behavior.
And of course. Him biting phatsa like that is a huge “dude what the hell” moment. But to see a guy who is definitely someone who normally has control of his faculties totally lose that control is honestly fascinating.

Look, was making Phatsa completely oblivious to omegaverse stuff the funniest way to deliver exposition? Probably.
But unrealistic? Honeys, have you seen the wild level of ignorance human beings are capable of when it comes to their own physiology?
I know we're all judging my poor Phatsa for not knowing about aob stuff, but it makes sense if they're establishing it, narrative wise, as a rare condition. It made me think of the fact that up until like two years ago I had no clue what fibromyalgia, which is relatively common, was until I became friends with someone that has it and educated myself on it. Also, just to be clear I'm not trying to be dismissive of a real and serious illness by comparing it to a silly thing like aob, people who have fibromyalgia have all my respect and support, it's just what came to mind while I was mulling the story over.
To be frank, the shitty ai translation is not helping at all and my Thai is still too shitty to catch any nuance, if there is any. That said I really do like Phatsa as a character so far and I really love that he kicked several people's ass in the very first episode. I think it's a perfect type of character for Oat.

That's the real question, isn't it? Because the answer appears to be never because Tiger would rather stay safely as a friend then risk losing any of their closeness.
