Artist Research: Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama (Born 1929) is a Japanese Pop Art and Abstract artist.

In this screen-printing piece: Pumpkin (2005), the tones are only an ochre yellow, and a deep black. The piece represents a black-dotted yellow pumpkin, with a background made of triangles. The contrast between the curves of the pumpkin and the straight and geometric lines in the background is what stands out to me. This artwork gives me a psychedelic feeling, caused by the use of multiple patterns. Obviously, the subject of this artwork is the pumpkin, but the artist actually used the dots and patterns as a catharsis: dots are supposed to represent the disappearance of the individual in the environment, and I believe this is a very important subject, especially in today’s society, with social media and internet.
