Spite art and ships

I absolutely love the first two acts of the game. They're packed with content, constantly engaging and there's always something interesting to do. But Act 3 is just dreadfully BORING. I got to a point where I just stopped caring about the story and ended up abandoning my Tav playthrough to start a Dark Urge run instead... and it was great, right up until I reached Baldur's Gate in Act 3 and got bored all over again.

Why does Act 3 feel like such a disjointed mess? The quests feel so disconnected from each other that there's barely any sense of urgency to resolve the main conflict. One of your companions gets kidnapped by one of the final bosses, Orin the Red (I love her design, by the way), and then the game proceeds to ignore that for the next 20 hours while you're running around the city, doing side quests, and eventually stumbling across Bhaal's temple in the sewers. It all feels so random. The companions barely interact with the main plot or with the player character, either.
