You have arrived! You drove through Lonepine, turned left and are heading to Mt. Whitney portal. Portal is rad. Watch out for bears! I love bears but they will eat you. They may not eat you but they will eat everything you have. Put all your stuff in bear boxes or you will be bummed. Don't forget... a fed bear is a dead bear. I love bears so don't feed them!
Let’s acclimate… If you are hiking in the summer months it is advised that you start early. Storms arrive in the afternoon so we were told to summit by noon. We started at 2:00 AM, yup 2:00 AM. This means the first several hours of our hike was in the dark, which I dig because I am supersonic in the dark… except my superpowers do not combat altitude sickness and I moved too quick and paid for it later… so don’t make that mistake. Long story short acclamation is key for newbies and for us it looked like this:
7/18: arrived at portal (8360’) in the evening, set up camp and went to sleep.
7/19: hike 2.5 miles to Lonepine Lake (9850’). Hang out here, have lunch and get your mind blown by the amazingness of mother nature. This also marks the entrance to the “Whitney Zone” which means you are now familiar with the first leg of your hike.
7/20: packed up, drove down to Lonepine (3727’), checked into the Dow Villa, took a hot shower, ate a good meal and went to sleep… we’re waking up at midnight!
7/21: woke up at 12:00 AM, drove to portal, tried to eat some breakfast… it’s 2:00 AM, go!

My pack is under 20lbs (still too heavy). Let's go!
3:17 AM | Altitude: 9850' (Lonepine Lake) | Mile: 2.5
It's official.

We just blazed through a ton of trail and did not stop until sunrise. It was not intentional, it just happened.
5:40 AM | Altitude: 12,000' (Trail Camp) | Mile: 6.0
Epic sunrise. Enough said.
5:42 AM | Altitude: 12,000' (Trail Camp) | Mile: 6.0
We have arrived at Trail Camp and we are feeling great. 6 miles behind us and the 98 switchbacks ahead. I decide to bury my bag under a bunch of rocks, ditch some weight and only take the essentials to summit.

Seb is hurting.

I got 98 problems, but...

Where am I, Mars?
7:32 AM | Altitude: n/a (98 switchbacks) | Mile: n/a
This light is amazing, my playlist is perfection... I am basically dancing up the trail! note: If you feel this good you are probably experiencing the first signs of altitude sickness.
7:48am | altitude: 13,777' (Trail Crest) | mile: 8.2
Trail crest! To the East you see Lonepine. To the West you get your first glimpse of Sequoia. It looks like Narnia to me.

Please leave your pets and firearms behind.

That looks freakin crazy and I'm starting to not feel so good... yep, altitude sickness.
