     He’s finished with his classes and club activities for the day, now just sitting there under one of the trees while staring up at the sky. There’s really no specific thoughts running through his head at the moment, just spending some time enjoying the beauty of the sky. It wasn’t like he had any, or many, friends to spend time with when he could because really he knew that he wasn’t a very interesting individual. Though, there were some people he had met through playing games that he realized seemed to maybe like him despite not being a very social person.

     Jaein’s attention is averted to a couple laughing and holding hands. Was that what ‘love’ was? Smiling and laughing happily with someone. He wasn’t sure, he had only seen these sort of things either in others or even in movies but had never really experienced the feeling himself. Was he even capable of feeling such a thing? Love? How did one even know if they actually felt this way towards another? The questions begin to fill his head, however with someone like him who had never had such an encounter with the foreign feeling he was only left with unanswered questions as he sat there.

     It seemed as if time just really didn’t slow down. The time that he’s spent so far here at Mokseong really feels like it was just yesterday that he had become a freshman at the university and now, here he was, a Junior. Of course he doesn’t remember most of what all had happened over the past few years while attending, though from what he had written down over that time seemed like it was a decent few years so far. Most of his time however had been spent studying and participating in his club activities which he didn’t mind at all, especially when it came to his medical classes.

     This time of year always seemed to be the hardest, though at the same time he didn’t mind it at all. His birthday was coming up, a lot quicker as the days passed, and like always he couldn’t help but try to keep himself as busy as possible to avoid thinking about it. What was really the point when all he would be doing was just spending that time alone, not even bothering to celebrate the day anymore at this point.

     Jaein had spent most of his time so far just sitting in the cafe reading up on some medical books while he sipped on his coffee. It would definitely be a little easier, and quieter, to really just study either in his room or even at the library on campus however it preferred spending time in the cafe due to the fact that he could actually just get coffee at any point if he ever needed a refill to help his brain wake up a little more at times. He had actually thought about getting a job at such a place just so he could enjoy the aroma of the one thing he liked to drink whenever he got the chance to. Though, with as much as he had going on with not only his clubs but also classes as well, so even trying to get a job with how busy he already was just wasn’t the best idea to really be thinking about.

     He’s been sitting there for a short while now at one of the tables, sipping on his beverage as he does so. Jaein wasn’t even really paying much attention to anything really going on around him, that is until he heard a certain name. He’s quick to glance around when he hears a certain name being said that makes his curiosity grow as he does so. It’s a name that he wouldn’t be able to even forget if he were to try. ‘Sage’ The name was all too familiar and someone that Jaein had gotten to know a little bit, apparently gaining a new nickname from the other in the whole process.

❅ Zombie | Jaein & Hojun

hojun was pretty excited for this topic. there were already a few ideas in his head, mostly focusing on animals and their medical theories. but he did have a few ideas in case the professor wanted something for people. unfortunately he wasn’t the most knowledge about the human biology since that was not his primary area of study.

when jaein approaches him he waves and tries to look as friendly as possible in his all-black outfit. “hey, i’m hojun. it’s nice to meet you.” he says. “so we gotta start work on this soon, right?” he smiles as he looks at the board curiously. “i’m not in the field of medicine with people, i’m studying veterinarian medicine… what are you studying?”

     If Jaein would just allow himself to show some sort of emotions rather than just looking like he didn’t have a care in the world, then maybe he would be able to easily make friends or even attempt to just look a little more friendly. Though, that was all easier said than done, especially for him. Maybe it was because he just was more focused on his studies rather than trying to make friends that he just didn’t bother to even try. It was something that he definitely needed to work on, however there was no way that it would be at the top of his list anytime soon.

     It wasn’t really strange for Jaein to actually seem as if he weren’t interested in whatever was going on around him, not really being the type of person who actually expressed any sort of emotions at all. It had been different when he was younger and would actually smile or laugh, though times change and so do people as well. It was as if now he were some sort of zombie that just roamed around, one that just did what he had to in order to get by and didn’t really even speak. The only time he did was when he was spoken to and even then his tone was usually more neutral and showed a lack of any emotion whatsoever.

     After he had spent most of his time helping bandage up a few students, all of which managed to injure themselves due to the haunted house, and parted ways with his brother once the two had also experienced the little exhibit, Jaein was actually planning on heading back to his dorm for the rest of the night. Though, as he was walking by he noticed that there were some movies being played and so he let his curiosity get the best of him, deciding to check it out to see what sort of movies would be playing.

     He honestly did try to stay awake, not thinking that the movies were really boring or anything, though they weren’t exactly ‘scary’ like they probably should have been. In the end, at some point, Jaein ended up falling asleep. He would jerk awake in the beginning when his head would nod off to one side or the other, however in the end he had failed to really stay awake and without knowing ended up with his head on the shoulder of someone next to him.

     Maybe his exhaustion had something to do with the fact that he had worn himself out helping other students earlier, or maybe it was due to just not getting much rest lately, either way he couldn’t fight off the sleep. Jaein doesn’t even know how long he had been like this, though when he finally slowly opens his eyes he doesn’t even realize right away that he’s basically using someone as a pillow, still half asleep as he blinks a few times and tries to gather his own surroundings a bit more.

     A few moments pass before he sits straight and glances around, noticing that the movie he had been watching before he passed out was already over. Had he really slept that long? His eyebrows furrowed together and he squints a bit as he tries to calculate just how long he had been asleep, though it’s at that moment that he realizes that he had actually been laying on something, or more like someone. Jaein slowly looks over, blinking yet a few more times at the stranger next to him. “I’m sorry.” His tone sounds flat, even his expression is blank as he speaks, though he’s actually sincere about what he says even though it may not look or sound like he is.

the gym is certainly decorated—morphed, more like—into the picture perfect haunted house. bell steps in without much care, humming to himself. a few steps in, and they haven’t encountered anything too bad, but they haven’t strayed that far from the entrance. there’s a few giggles surrounding them, which bell finds amusing in itself. “they say the ghosts around campus are a part of the attraction. i wonder if they’re participating willingly or not.” he’s a little worried for jaein. the haunted house isn’t exactly an enclosed space, but it could trigger something unsettling within jaein either way.

     Jaein wasn’t really one who got scared easily, not unless he were to be near any sort of fire or even in an enclosed space. Things like haunted houses were probably something that he really just wouldn’t give any sort of reaction to no matter how ‘scary’ people claimed it to be. It all had to do with the fact that he had practically become numb over the years, emotionless and just really uninterested in a lot of things unless it had to do with his studies, or even Bell. Between all of that, Jaein really didn’t have time to worry much about anything else, even if he wanted to.

     He gives a small nod in response to his brother. “Of course I remembered. You’re my brother after all....I could never forget your birthday.” He listens closely to his brothers words. It was true, Jaein had even often wondered how it was possible for someone to be born on such a day, finding this to be strange while they were younger. Though, now that they were older and he began to understand things a lot more, he realized that it just happened when conceiving happened. Thanks to his medical knowledge for certain things such as this really.

     While they make their way inside, Jaein does his best to focus on Bell and not the fact that the space was so tight around them. He does his best to keep his breathing calm, to do anything he can to not mess this up for his brother. Closing his eyes for a short moment to gather his thoughts, he finally opens his eyes after a bit and speaks in a somewhat calm tone. “They probably did it willingly. It is Halloween after all, the one time of year that they can use being a ghost as an advantage to have a little fun for once.”

eyes on his brother’s, he does just that. “it’s my biggest fear taking form, like what usually happens when you encounter a boggart. i don’t know what you heard, but don’t take it personally. a boggart can’t predict what happens in the future.” the more he talks, the more it’s sounding as if he’s trying to convince himself. his voice drops, softer than earlier, “i saw mother. she was… well, she wasn’t immobile. she could move, but not like a person would. i don’t think she can see. not when her eyes—” he cuts himself off, that detail can stay with him. jaein doesn’t need to know, not when his brother tortures himself with guilt every single day. “like i said, a boggart doesn’t predict the future. i won’t fail.”

     Jaein’s brain screwed with him a lot, he couldn’t even remember half the stuff that happened that day only bits and pieces of it all. He knew one thing was for sure and that was the fact that he was at fault for what happened to their mother but what he never understood was why Bell never blamed him for what happened. He never bothered to ask the other of this though because he was afraid of what the others answer would be.

     He slightly shakes his head at what Bell says. “Of course they’ll talk, this is a school after all.” He knows this fact of course only because he’s always hearing others gossip around the university as if they have nothing better to do. He never understood why others liked such things, maybe because it helped the time go by? Or was it because they just really enjoyed sticking their noses into others’ business? Maybe he would never know the answer, not like he really wanted to know in the first place.

     Hearing Bell speak, even when he stops mid-sentence, Jaein knows where this is going. He’s already able to somewhat visualize what his brother had seen and the thought alone is enough to make him tare his gaze away from his brother and clench his fists at just the thought. The last bit of what Bell says though is enough to make him shake the thoughts out of his head and look back at his brother once more, this time narrowing his eyes. “You’re right about one thing, Bell. A boggart can’t predict the future, though you’re also wrong about something else.” He pauses and gives a soft sigh.

“hey,” he greets, curt as always but his tone isn’t as sharp as it usually is. it never is when he’s speaking to jaein. “there’s probably a bunch of reckless students who are injuring themselves left and right, which means you might be busy.” bell points at the haunted house beside them, the corner of his lips quirked into a small smile. “i was wondering if you wanted to try that out, though.“

     Jaein hadn’t really planned on bandaging others up tonight. He originally wanted to find Bell, wish his brother a ‘happy birthday’ and give him the gift he had gotten him, though as soon as he had arrived at the little event he realized that others had been exiting the haunted house with injuries they had received after being too scared inside.

     In the end, here he was outside of the little attraction helping out others like he usually did. Jaein had lost count at how many he had helped out so far, though not once did he not take a few glances around when he was finished to try and find his brother. Yes, they were having their differences here lately, though they were still family after all and he still cared very much for Bell even though he could be unreasonable at times.

     Right when he was about to give up on any hope of finding the other, he hears that familiar voice as he stands up straight once he’s finished bandaging up yet another ‘victim’ of the night. If he were able to really smile, he would, though instead he just gives his brother that same blank look like he usually does. “Hey, happy birthday, Bell.” Sometimes he missed the way he was able to smile so easily, but he had gotten used to this sort of expression that he forgot how to actually use his facial muscles at some point. “I didn’t actually come here to bandage others up.... It just sort of happened....”

     Jaein looks over at the haunted house as his brother speaks, blinking a few times before returning his attention to the younger. “You want to go in there?” He didn’t really want to, though it was Bell’s birthday after all so he decided he would go along with everything, well just about everything, his brother wanted for the day. “Sure, we can do that.” He says this as he glances around to make sure that no one else needed any help before he began walking towards the haunted house, his fists clenching as they get closer to it with each step.

all things considered, it was only a matter of time until the other find out what happened. word seems to travel fast in this mokseong. with jaein using bell’s birth name as opposed to his english name, he knows he’s in some deep shit. still, he manages a smile. “i wonder what’s so important that you can’t wait until later.” despite everything, he isn’t one to deny his brother or go against his words. well, as long as it doesn’t relate to dark magic.

jaein is one of the very few people he can’t seem to ignore. he doesn’t want to, either. even though jaein’s expression doesn’t seem to show a lot, bell can figure out where their conversation will lead. it’s not a conversation he wants to have out in the open regardless of the language they are using, but he supposes beggars can’t be choosers. “it doesn’t seem like you’re going to give me any choice to refuse. i’m not walking away. what is there to talk about?”

     Jaein knew that Bell wanted to just see their mother again, hell he wished he could as well, though he also knew that it was impossible for this to even happen. There was just no way that she could be brought back and even if there were a way, most likely, she wouldn’t be the same of course. Things such as bringing people back definitely was something that no one really even dared to attempt doing because really there wasn’t a possible way, at least none that would end up successful. He had known that Bell wanted to bring their mother back but it seemed as if no matter what he tried to tell his younger brother, no matter how much he tried to convince him, the other just wouldn’t give up.

     He loved his brother, truly he did, but there were times when he wished that Bell would just give up, find a new goal in life, and stop wasting time on something that just couldn’t be done. The fact that the two of them wished for the same thing but were leading two different paths just seemed to put a strain on their relationship more and more, something that Jaein really hated having to experience. He had already lost one member of the family and he really didn’t want to lose another, especially Bell.

     Letting out a soft sigh as he listens to his brother, Jaein continues to give that same expressionless look. It was a look that he just seemed to develop over time after that day their lives changed. He never smiled or even laughed like he had back then, he didn’t show anything but a blank look no matter what he was doing or who he was talking to. Sometimes he would force a slight smile but it would quickly disappear quickly as if it never even happened, his way of trying to seem normal but failing miserably at it.

     Years went by like a blur for Jaein. He spent most of his time just focusing on his studies and his club activities really, it was how he kept himself busy and prevented his thoughts from thinking about unnecessary things. One thing he did make sure though to keep track of was what his younger brother Jaehyun was doing. He knew of Jaehyun wanted to do dark magic, knew that the other had his ‘reasons’ behind all of this, though no matter what the reasons were he still didn’t believe in what his brother was doing. It was wrong, dangerous even.

     Jaein is on his way to see what exactly his brother was up to, wanting to make sure that the other either hadn’t done something to get himself hurt or even make sure that he hadn’t randomly passed out somewhere. It’s then though that he hears a couple other students speaking about someone, more particularly his brother, and he stops for a moment to listen in and make sure that it isn’t anything serious. What he hears though really does make him worry. “Did you hear what Jaehyun saw when he encountered that boggart? I wish I could have seen it for myself really, someone told me that it was pretty horrifying.” He listens closely, not missing a single word that’s being said.

     He hears it all and he knows exactly what they’re talking about, even if they don’t fully understand the situation at hand, and it doesn’t take Jaein long soon after to continue on with what he was previously doing. He had to find Jaehyun and confront him about the matter.
