Originally a part of this post, I didn’t want this point to get lost since I only talked about it as a loose tie to another theory. 

This is the first time we see Sangwoo’s room, it’s a panel from Chapter 1 and the way his room looks does not change during the series.

Look at his room, what do you see?

Exactly. Nothing. You see nothing. There is nothing in his room. I’m not Korean, I don’t know how they decorate their house, I don’t know if they are this minimalistic but there is no little trinkets, posters, pictures, trophies, books, clothes, anything that may belong to Sangwoo. Not just the room, but it’s the whole downstairs. It’s an eerie blank canvas, there is nothing in the house that makes it look like someone is living in it.

Comparison to Yoon Bum’s room:

Yes, Yoon Bum obviously lives in a much smaller place than Sangwoo but he has his keys, his phone, his ID the nail polish he stole. He has things around, that belong to him.

Sangwoo on the other hand, has nothing around, anywhere. His house is clean and bare like it was just bought and furnished. 

It’s actually quite suspicious how Sangwoo manages to keep a two floored house this clean and presentable all by himself, and we know he is, because Seungbae checks upstairs and he says nothing, so there is nothing incriminating or weird upstairs either.

But, this is the house Sangwoo grew up in, and Sangwoo was a kid once, he must have some stuff that belong to him around. And, as a kid, they couldn’t have put him in this room with the closet leading to the basement, right? No, he would have definitely been too afraid to sleep there, kids are famously afraid of basements, right?

So…This is not Sangwoo’s actual room. This is not the room he grew up sleeping in.

SPOILERS PEOPLE YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! 

I’m honestly just explaining what you probably already know and what other people have already explained in case you missed any of it. This post basically explains Sangwoo and how he really loves surprises when it comes to Bum surpassing his expectations with certain things.

Also, I didn’t intend for it to be this long I don’t usually do meta’s so if it’s just crap, you know why.

So I was asked by a friend why it was in chapter 19 that Sangwoo looked so surprised by Bum after he had killed Jieun.

Some people thought it was a test to see him NOT kill her however from what I can tell, Sangwoo definitely wanted Bum to kill Jieun. In fact, at this point it would have been absolute chaos if Bum had not done as Sangwoo expected and taken the girls life at least even hesitantly. That was why he tested him so much at first.

In case you didn’t catch on, here are a few of the tests Sangwoo had laid out for Bum, skip to next part if you already know what they are:

The first test was the abuse. Sangwoo wanted to test Bum and push him down into a state of submission in the same methods that his own father had used against he and his mother. This has also been analysed here in their post about Sangwoo’s superiority complex. At this point Sangwoo was testing Bum’s reactions against his blows while also knocking him down into this mindset of fear and complete obedience (which as we’ve seen from Bum’s flashbacks may not have been completely necessary since has always been such a timid boy, however that can be debatable seeing as how he shouted repetitive statements to the girl he used to stalk - Koogi writes Bum out so well by reminding us that Stalkers are indeed terrifying and unpredictable no matter how passive they may seem).

The next test was with the rat poison - although this can be debatably viewed as being the first official test - he wanted to see if Bum was capable of killing someone. Sangwoo knew Bum had done something to the food but he waited and had Bum eat it first to see if he was right. He was, and Bum fell ill, so to Sangwoo, Bum had passed this test, and was then kind to him and nursed him back to health - note - I say ‘kind’ however the preferred term may be ‘sympathised’, and you can read more about that in this post here.

The next test was when he left the house with Bum inside and waited to see if he would try to escape (which Bum did) and so Bum failed this test and was therefore punished (you can read more about that in the post about Sangwoo’s superiority complex - disobedience is a big no-no in Sangwoo’s disciplinary code).

Another test was when Sangwoo had Bum kill the old man “with him” - by that I mean forcing him since Bum is clearly struggling to escape Sangwoo’s hold and then distraught to see the old man stabbed and cough up blood in front of him -  to see how Bum would cope with ‘killing’ or watching someone die in front of him. To Sangwoo, this was also a means of bonding, as you can see in the way he snuggles into Bum like a ‘loving partner’ who has just made up with his lover over a small disagreement.

ok main points now:

Sangwoo has tested Bum many many times up till 19 to see whether Bum was “The One” for him - he wants someone who will not only submit to him, but also love him and kill with him (either a means of bonding or precaution - Bum can’t go to the police now and say “that man is a murderer/kidnapper please lock him up” because he too has just committed first degree murder - he willingly stabbed Jieun 12 times though he was not thinking of Jieun as he stabbed her, but of the girl who broke his heart.

As for why Sangwoo was surprised by Bum after he killed her - Chapter 19 translations are from Jaynia! Full credit goes to her!!i - if you reread the scene after Bum kills Jieun, Sangwoo is seen smiling while Bum explains how he felt as he was killing the girl. 

My guess as to why Sangwoo was so surprised, despite having tested Bum all of this time and having high expectations as though Bum would just automatically pass every test he gave him, is because Sangwoo did not expect Bum to be almost smiling after he had just killed someone, let alone apathetic to having done so! This sensitive submissive is actually on the verge of cracking a smile and says that he does not care about having just murdered someone in cold blood - of course Sangwoo would be shook.

To Sangwoo, Bum has done more than just passed his test this time, he has ACED this test by going above and beyond his expectations that he had laid out for him. Bum has outdone Sangwoo’s expectations and done what otherwise would have been thought to be the impossible.

Just look at that jaw drop and that eyebrow raise.

So important to remember about Sangwoo is that he loves surprises when it comes to things like this. Remember chapter 1? The reason why Sangwoo didn’t strike Bum with the bat and kill him immediately was because Bum surprised him with his declaration of love. 

This was a massive deal to Sangwoo and even made him kill the CEO’s daughter instead of Bum, “normally I would’ve killed you and let the girl live a little longer” were his words, and really is the first scene that clearly shows what sort of person Sangwoo is when it come to him testing others and then rewarding/punishing them.

Sangwoo was also surprised by Bum in any other scenes such as: - when he managed to cum from Bum’s over-the-pants handjob 

- when Bum didn’t leave the house after Seungbae’s inspection but stayed and waited for Sangwoo to return

^Note that Seungbae is the only one shitting himself because Bum wasn’t in that closet - cue Sangwoo melt down as he assess’ (while in quite the panic mind you) that Bum has failed this test i.e. disobeyed him.

And cue the decision to punish instead of reward ~

Until of course, Bum surprises him by showing he was actually in the house all along.

Here his superiority complex plays up and he shouts at Bum, however the focus I want to draw on is how Sangwoo suddenly goes from ‘Let’s kill him’ to ‘Let’s stay together forever’.

I don’t really need to add the pics, if you’re buying the chapters like me, you know the scenes so I’ll quickly say them; there’s also:

- when he didn’t run away at the clothing store when they went shopping

- and when Bum managed to say “I love you” in the car even though Sangwoo had done all of those harsh things to him (this was a smaller reaction of Sangwoo’s tho)

BUT WAIT

What does this mean and why are you bothering to read this long post?

Well because of this little scene in the more recent chapters that I believe can be paralleled to not only the other tests Sangwoo has thrown at Bum and watched him either pass/fail then punish/reward.

In this scene, after Sangwoo and Jieun have sung their little duet that Sangwoo had already stated was entirely dedicated to Bum, Sangwoo is later complimented by Bum when Bum says he was “cool” before he starts comparing Sangwoo to himself.

Sangwoo then is sliming like a child being praised by his mother in more than one sense  before he is brought backf from his little Mother x Son perspective by Bum’s rather explicit confession.

But when else do we see Sangwoo looking so utterly shocked while Bum is sniffling because of a rather similar scenario? Cue the parallels:

Quite scary when you overlap these scenes and it sounds as though Sangwoo is telling Bum he has “lost his mind” while Bum says “I don’t care.”

But why I thought this was worth drawing on for people who have not yet realised, is because of the scenes that follow in the bathroom scene of chapter 17.

Sangwoo here offers the reward to Bum for having outdone his expectations, the reward of course being his dick.

To me, this means that Sangwoo is most definitely going to reward Bum for passing his test in chapter 19 by once again perhaps giving his dick to Bum (quite literally) because Bum not only managed to kill Jieun, but also come out with complete apathy for having done so. Wether or not Sangwoo finally starts treating Bum as something slightly more than a prisoner and more of an equal is yet to be theorised. Personally I believe Koogi will have Sangwoo bring Bum up ever so slightly from the level he’s kept him down at (as another means of rewarding him) however will still be prevented by his superiority complex from actually bringing him up to the level of being his equal. 

This being said, they will most definitely have penetrative sex in season 2 - Koogi herself has even made that clear, because Bum has finally proven himself to be the closest thing to Sangwoo’s ideal partner-in-crime/””lover””.
