im so deeply obsessed with how each of the gfin covers reflect hiroses relatioship/level of friendship with nakamura (and vice versa)
the first cover shows an ideal hirose, before nakamura truly gets to know hirose and briefly superficially likes him mostly for his looks before learning about him and his personality
meanwhile the second cover shows other sides of hirose (showing a nervous face, the assertive pointing face in both) as the second manga focuses on nakamura learning more about hirose past his looks
ppl tend to trash on the second manga for "lack of development" when development isnt what this manga is about!!!!theyre already freinds!!!! this is about nakamura learning more about hirose and the other sides of him!!
yes i do like the pacing changes MUCH better in the anime but i think people go too hard on the second manga
“It’s still you,” said Jesper. “Same curls. Same worried little divot between the brows.”
Rereading SoC and this made me laugh because first there's a detailed and mildly poetic description of Jesper and the next sentence is just
"and he looks like a dorky bird"
have you ever watched a bl with your life on the line

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
Something very funny to me about the idea of Hirose being a genuine delinquent in middle school. He’s still a good kid at heart, yeah, but he also doesn’t take shit from anyone and more than willing to knock people’s faces in if they piss him off. Even funnier if he‘s built a reputation for himself at his old school for being the cute, kinda girly looking boy with a mean left hook. He’s definitely taken it down a notch since entering high school, but his legend hasn’t died off.
This is all set up to say I think Hirose should run into an old middle school friend of his while he’s out with Nakamura on a date, and break the poor guy’s mind with how whipped Hirose is now. The same Hirose who sent an older kid to the hospital is now giggling and blushing whenever this absolute loser so much as breathes in his direction. He says as much to Hirose when Nakamura steps away to use the bathroom. Hirose’s smile drops immediately as he yanks his former friend to eye-level by his shirt’s collar, threatening that if he ever hears him insult his boyfriend again he’ll do much worse than send him to the hospital. Hirose’s former friend silently nods as his knees start to give out. Hirose stares him down for a moment before releasing him with a huff, watching the other boy scramble away from him and into the crowd. Hirose perks right up when Nakamura comes back, happy to continue their date without any unnecessary distractions. Nakamura, for his part, remains none the wiser of the little terror he’s managed to tame.
Perhaps my last round of sharpshooter's back, baby fanart!
love an aggressively pragmatic wylan. a wylan who is so good at reading social cues but so bad at behaving according to them. a wylan who is tough and snappy but quick to apologize because he is so afraid of angering people who claim they love him.
and in turn i love a jesper who just does whatever comes to heart. a jesper who can’t read social cues for the life of him but thrives in social settings anyways. a jesper who is sarcastic and mean but never cruel and careful to never cut too deep.
wylan and jesper who balance each other out while also fully fueling each other’s fires.
They might suffer. They might take their knocks, but Wylan was right, in the end they were all supposed to stay standing. "No mourners" Jesper said, surprised by the ache of tears in his throat. "No funerals" they all replied softly.

not the first person to say it but very obsessed with the idea of child wylan being strange and unnerving. like yk those kids you meet sometimes who have this harrowing sense of dread surrounding them? yeah that was kid wylan. him developing a strong imagination as a coping mechanism and being able to get incredibly lost in thought to the point where he's almost untouchable. him finding friends in inanimate objects or bugs around the house to the point that it concerns adults. him finding extremely niche hiding spots for objects/food/possessions that are so sneaky it's bizarre. him zoning out to an unhealthy degree as a way to try and defend himself from what was being done. idek.
one of my personal favorite wylan headcanons has always been that when he writes the "Eck" in "Van Eck" (or any capital E for that matter) he writes it so that the bottom of the E looks like a square root symbol. like this lol:
i think using a math symbol would help him think of it less as a letter and more as a symbol that can be broken down. i feel that using something he already knows and is comfortable with would likely help his brain recognize the shape better.
What'cha reading? 📖
+ Close up!
Might continue it into a mini comic..
I love sea creatures too🐙🐙🐙
Very funny if Hirose ends up dating a girl who straight up looks like a female Nakamura at some point. He’s deep in the pits of comphet purgatory at this point, and as much as Hirose would never admit it, on some subconscious level he gravitated towards her because of the visual similarities. He asks her out, thinking that maybe this attraction means that he’s finally figuring out the appeal of dating. She’s sweet, polite, independent. She doesn’t ask much of him and he doesn’t ask much of her. Hirose is…content.
Nakamura is, of course, devastated. He’s always devastated when Hirose starts dating a new girl, but this is the longest a relationship has ever lasted—he might even marry her one day. Nakamura throws himself into his coursework and tentatively emerging social life in college, desperate to suture the reopened wound of his first heartbreak. Hirose is deeply troubled by his friend’s new distance, made even worse when he starts hearing about all these new friends in the city taking up the other boys time.
Anyone in their lives with the misfortune of witnessing of any of this is begs for the sweet release of death. Or maybe a chance to lock the two dumbasses in a closet and throw away the key. Either works.

My incredibly bleak philosophy of compassion is that we should all pity each other horribly and practice an according amount of kindness.
I asked for a pastry at the coffee shop. When I raised my card up to pay, he simply said "you're good." and waved it away. I wondered why. I wondered what made him think I deserved to have my order be free. Sparing me those two dollars.
Sitting down at the table, I remembered the scars on my arm. The universal signifier of "This Kid Needs Help." Maybe his kindness was only out of pity. He saw those and assumed there was some great misery and wanted to offer me some relief. It's generally good to be kind to people who are hurting. But I wasn't hurting that bad.
The thing is, there is some great misery. People generally aren't doing that great. There is a great misery within me and within him and within everyone, and some people notice the pain, some people express it, others don't. But we all suffer from something.
It doesn't matter if someone seems to deserve some relief. Everyone needs it. Everyone is suffering constantly. Some more than others, but still. This Kid Needs Help applies to everyone.
Thirty minutes later, I went to get a second pastry, intending to pay and leave a tip this time. It was the same cashier. As he reached to grab it for me, I saw scars on his arm.
But it doesn't really matter. He'd deserve a tip anyway. Because it's never just us hurting.
i do love how natural the progression of mahiru's character growth is to the point people can kinda forget he started off as a meathead who thinks of beating the shit out of tsubaki and forcing a contract on him instead of communicating his feelings and listening to others
