listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious

On paper, this Player is everything you'd expect from a selfless, dragon-slaying hero; It's very rare to see it without a smile on her face or a sword in hand. It is, after all, aware of the role it plays.
However, even from a purely objective point of view, "Player" is undeniably strange.
It isn't that the Player doesn't understand social cues, or how to read a room, or really any of the arbitrary, unspoken rules that govern polite conversation. It's just that, ninety-nine percent of the time, it prefers to operate on its own.
“Social cues? More like social suggestions.” ← “Player”, probably.
Everything it does is just a little off, from how it will hold eye contact until someone else breaks it to it's cheerful disregard for 'subtlety'. Her voice also never deviates from this sort of flat, vaguely amused drawl---which makes it very difficult to tell if it's joking or not.
However, it has this weirdly intense charisma going for it that manages to charm (almost) anyone it runs across.
Make no mistake: Despite its laid-back, friendly demeanor... this motherfucker is a vault door masquerading as an open book.

I don't mean to dismiss the fact that the world feels like shit, but this is also an incredibly human experience. There was always a Before. Decades ago, there were people who remembered what cloth felt like before plastic and polyester, and before that there were people who remembered what food tasted like before it was processed at huge warehouses and factories, and before that there were people who remembered what the night sky looked like when there was no electricity. Centuries ago, people complained about how much better the air smelled before factories existed, even miles and miles away.
Even when the world around you doesn't change in a way that is strange and scary, you might. It's why that final line in Gatsby hits so hard.

i'm listening to gathering moss, by robin wall kimmerer, and she is talking about a very odd job she was consigned to do, where an eccentric millionaire recuited her to consult on a "habitat restoration". when she arrives, the job they actually want her to do is to tell them how to plant mosses on the rocks in his garden. he wants it to look like a specific, beautiful wild cliff in the woods nearby, with centuries-old beds of moss growing thick and strong. she tells him it is impossible. such a thing would take decades to accomplish.
later, she is called back to look at the progress of the moss garden and is amazed by the thick, well-established mosses. how did they do it? she asks.
then they take her out to the woods and show her that they have been blasting huge chunks of rock out of the cliff, packaging them in burlap, and moving them to the owner's garden.
This quote really got me: "The owner is a man who loves mosses, and the exercise of power. I have no doubts of his sincerity in wishing to protect them from harm, once they conformed to his landscape design. But I think you cannot own a thing and love it at the same time. Owning diminishes the sovreignty of a thing, enriching the possessor and diminishing the possessed. If he truly loved mosses more than control, he would have left them alone, and walked each day to see them."
