While I do not condone acts of violence and I would not wish death upon anyone, I do not have any empathy for Charlie Kirk. As someone who generally values having empathy and caring for others, it has been a process to sift through these complicated thoughts, but it has been necessary.

Kirk was a person who spread hateful rhetoric and contributed to the violence that happens every day to those in marginalized communities without making the headlines. Just because of how his life ended it does not mean that we should ever dance around that fact. This whole idea that we cannot call out the dead is, in my opinion, bullshit because is one was a terrible person in life, that should not be forgotten just because they happen to be dead.

Frankly, I find it disgusting that there are so many stories about Kirk clogging the headlines when Melissa Hortman’s assassination was out of the headlines almost as soon as it happened. There are school shootings and CHILDREN are losing their lives and they’re barely a month into the school year, and there is hardly a whisper on the national news platforms. There is what seems to be performative outrage and the solution seems to always be “thoughts and prayers.”

Everyone should be outraged and disturbed by the escalating violence, but it should not have taken the death of an extreme right wing, racist, misogynistic, anti LGBTQ white man to spark that outrage.

Again, I do not condone what happened to Charlie Kirk, but I DO NOT mourn him or have empathy for him. I do have empathy for those that went through the trauma of witnessing his violent death, as that will surely stick with them for life. I do mourn for the children, members of marginalized communities, and Melissa Hortman (as well as her husband and dog) who lost their lives due to the disease of hatred.
