Because- and everyone else probably noticed this right away but I actually liked getting to reevaluate the movie after this- I'd gone through the movie with this love for Liam, obviously. But also this mindset of oh, okay he's kind of an asshole for doing that to Skylar. Like what is he getting out of this thing with Dakota except for proving himself right.

But I was so, so, so wrong, and I've never been happier and more heartbroken to be so. Because in that truck scene you can see it in Liam. The crush he has on Dakota. So big and overwhelming and something he can't hide even through his blasé, unaffected act.

He likes Dakota, despite everything. Despite Dakota standing back why his friends say the things they do, despite Dakota being his best friend's boyfriend. Despite having his feelings entirely disregarded after they hook-up.

I think there could be some jealously there, too. Like, Skylar's a girl. A pretty girl. A straight girl. She isn't going to struggle to find somebody. But Liam is so obviously ostracized at school. And he finally finds some boy who might be attracted to him. Who is. And then they hook-up and it's proof that someone can like Liam, too.

Only for Dakota to ignore it. To act like it didn't happen and beg Liam to not tell anyone and to hide and still try to kiss him regardless. And I get that Dakota is warring with himself and the weight of everything, but it's a shit thing to do.

When he came out, she swooped him up in her arms- supported him in a way no one else ever has. Not even his friends. He used to tell her about everything at school, but he saw how much it worried her. How upset it makes her that she can't fix everything. She's tried. She's been up to the school multiple times. It always happens again.

So he stops telling her everything the other kids say, but he thinks she can see it. From the way she hugs him, lets him crawl into bed with her when he can't sleep.
